A 31-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition with gunshot wounds, and other motorists’ vehicles were struck by bullets, after an undercover police pursuit on San Antonio’s West Side ended in crashes and a foot chase Sunday evening. No officers or bystanders were reported injured. 1 2
One passenger in the pursued vehicle was taken into custody. Another escaped while officers chased the wounded driver on foot and had not been identified or located at the police briefing. Those are the immediate consequences of an arrest operation whose most consequential details—where the shooting began, how many officers fired and when the driver was wounded—remain unresolved. 2 4
The account so far comes from Police Chief Jesse Salame’s preliminary briefing, as reported by local news outlets. It describes officers returning fire after the driver shot at them, but it is not yet a fully reconstructed sequence of the confrontation. The department’s homicide and internal affairs units are conducting separate, simultaneous investigations. 2 4
An arrest operation becomes a pursuit
Salame said undercover officers were following the man to arrest him on a felony narcotics warrant. They tracked him through several locations, including a hotel and a gas station, while checking his identity. The plan was to bring in uniformed officers to make the arrest once they confirmed they had the person they were seeking. How long that surveillance lasted was not established. 4
At least four officers were involved. Salame described the four covert-unit officers as having approximately eight to 10 years of experience. Their participation in the operation does not establish that all four fired their weapons; police had not determined how many did. 2 3
According to Salame, the driver realized he was being followed, waved a handgun out his vehicle’s window and fired at the officers. Officers returned fire, and at least one officer shot him. That account makes clear that police discharged their weapons—not that an officer was wounded. 2 4
The emergency call and the shooting have been described with different approximate times. Initial KABB and WOAI reports placed the call about a shooting in progress near Marbach Road and Horal Drive at about 7:20 p.m. Sunday, October 25. Their updated accounts described the shooting as happening around 7:30 p.m. Those estimates do not establish the minute of the first shot or a settled chronology. 3 4
Nor is the intersection a confirmed firing position. KSAT reported that police had not established exactly where the man and officers exchanged gunfire, although the pursuit reached a parking lot near Marbach Road and Horal Drive. 2
The driver turned his vehicle around and hit another vehicle, then struck a tree outside a nearby Burger King. He got out and ran. Officers pursued him on foot, and he collapsed a short distance away in a parking lot, where they found he had been wounded. He was taken into custody and transported to a hospital in critical condition. Investigators recovered a handgun inside the crashed vehicle. 2 4
The crash and the discovery of his wounds are separate parts of that account. Salame said investigators had not yet determined where the man was shot. His critical condition was reported alongside gunshot wounds; the available account does not establish that the crash caused those injuries. 4
The danger reached other motorists
At least two other vehicles were caught in the crossfire, and bystanders’ vehicles were struck by gunfire. Other motorists also faced the collision as the driver turned around. Salame said no officers, occupants of the other vehicles or bystanders were injured, and nobody else was taken to a hospital. Motorists were being interviewed as witnesses about what they saw and heard. 1 4
The absence of additional injuries is welcome, but it does not make this an encounter confined to police and the pursued vehicle. People sharing the road were exposed to bullets and a collision. Reconstructing that exposure is part of understanding what happened, not a peripheral detail.
Inside the driver’s vehicle were two passengers. Officers took the front-seat passenger into custody; the rear-seat passenger fled during the foot pursuit. Salame said police hoped questioning the front-seat passenger would help identify the person who escaped. No verified passenger charges or allegation that either passenger fired a weapon have been established. 4
As of the latest verified account available October 26, the driver had not been publicly named, no subsequent medical update beyond critical condition was established, and the rear-seat passenger had not been confirmed found. The number of shots remained unknown. 1 4
There were multiple shots fired. I can’t tell you yet how many.
The available reporting does not establish a current police shelter-in-place instruction, avoid-area order, road closure or reopening time. That is neither an all-clear nor proof of a continuing threat. The passenger’s escape alone does not establish a danger to the public.
The investigations must now fill the gaps between the planned narcotics arrest and the wounded man’s collapse: the locations of the gunfire, the officers who fired and the point at which the driver was hit. Until then, the police account explains the alleged trigger for the shooting, but not its complete course—or how gunfire reached other motorists’ vehicles. 2 4
As aired 16 lines
- Gunfire struck other motorists’ vehicles during an undercover police pursuit.
- Police say a 31-year-old warrant suspect suffered critical gunshot wounds. One passenger was taken into custody, while another escaped. Investigators are still reconstructing where the gunfire happened and how the pursuit unfolded.
- The pursuit reached a parking lot near Marbach Road and Horal Drive on San Antonio’s West Side. The driver ultimately crashed outside a nearby Burger King. Police haven’t pinpointed exactly where he and the officers exchanged fire.
- The emergency response began Sunday, October 25, with a call about a shooting in progress around seven twenty that evening. The shooting itself was described as happening around seven thirty. Both times are approximate.
- Police Chief Jesse Salame says undercover officers were trying to arrest the driver on a felony narcotics warrant. His preliminary account describes an operation that moved through several locations before officers and the man fired at each other.
- Undercover officers followed the man to a hotel and a gas station while checking his identity. They planned to bring in uniformed officers to make the arrest once they were sure they had the person they were looking for.
- At least four officers were involved in the operation. Salame described the four covert-unit officers as having about eight to ten years of experience.
- He says the driver realized he was being followed, waved a handgun out his vehicle’s window and fired at the officers. Officers returned fire, and at least one officer shot him.
- Officers fired during the pursuit, but police haven’t said how many of them fired. Salame said there were multiple shots, and he couldn’t yet give a total. Investigators also hadn’t determined where in the sequence the driver was wounded.
- The driver turned his vehicle around near Marbach Road and Horal Drive and hit another vehicle. He then struck a tree outside Burger King, left his vehicle and ran. Officers chased him on foot, and he collapsed a short distance away in a nearby parking lot.
- Officers found the man with gunshot wounds after he collapsed. They took him into custody and had him transported to a hospital in critical condition. Investigators recovered a handgun from inside the crashed vehicle.
- Two passengers had been riding with the driver. The rear-seat passenger got away while officers were pursuing the driver on foot, leaving police trying to identify another person who had been inside the vehicle during the confrontation.
- Police took the front-seat passenger into custody. The rear-seat passenger hadn’t been located at the briefing. Salame said officers didn’t yet know who he was and hoped speaking with the front-seat passenger would help identify him.
- Other motorists were exposed to both the shooting and the collision as the driver turned around. Some of their vehicles were struck by gunfire. Police were interviewing those motorists as witnesses about what they saw and heard.
- At least two other vehicles were caught in the crossfire. Salame said no officers, occupants of those vehicles or bystanders were injured. He also said nobody else was taken to the hospital.
- The department’s homicide and internal affairs units are conducting separate investigations at the same time. They’re examining what led to the confrontation, the exchange of gunfire and what followed. The driver’s last reported condition was critical, and the rear-seat passenger still hadn’t been located.
