$4.15 Today, Under $2 After November: Trump's Gas Promise Meets the War

With gas around $4.10 and oil above $100, Trump says the Iran war ends right after November 3 and fuel falls below $2 — without a mechanism, a crude target, or talks.

The sign glowed $4.15 in the evening light as a car pulled away, an American flag blurred behind it. 2 That was AAA’s national average for regular gasoline on September 7, 2026: $4.1505 a gallon. 2 GasBuddy put the average at $4.09 on September 8, and the Energy Information Administration put it at $4.07 for the week of August 31. 6 10

Against that number, President Donald Trump offered another one: below $2. 1 In remarks reported September 9, 2026 by the Associated Press, Trump said oil prices will tumble downward right after the U.S. election and the Iran war will end immediately after the election, with gasoline eventually settling below $2 a gallon. 1 22 He offered no mechanism, no timeline beyond “after the election,” no crude-oil price target, and no plan for how the war actually stops. 1

The war he promises to end is six months old. 1 It began February 28, 2026 with Operation Epic Fury, the joint U.S.-Israeli strikes whose opening salvo killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. 1 Fighting has centered on the Strait of Hormuz, with a renewed exchange of attacks after a roughly monthlong lull. 23 26 The U.S. and Iran exchanged attacks in the week to September 4, ending that lull, and fighting was still continuing in the strait as of September 9. 23 30 Analysts describe a dangerous and potentially unsustainable military stalemate, with Washington trying to manage it and Tehran trying to break it. 26

The gasoline arithmetic shows how far that promise has to travel. 9 Trump’s target is less than half of all three current readings around $4.10. 2 6 The last time the national average was below $2 was January 11, 2016, when it hit $1.996 a gallon — the first dip below the $2 mark since March 23, 2009. 33 Getting to below $2 from roughly $4.10 now would require more than halving the pump price. 9 Crude oil is the largest single component of a gallon of gasoline — about 60 percent on most estimates, with one breakdown putting crude at 61 percent, refining at 14 percent, distribution and marketing at 11 percent, and federal and state taxes at 14 percent. 35 11 A one-dollar change in crude does not translate into a one-dollar change at the pump, and gasoline rises quickly when crude jumps but falls much more slowly when oil drops, a pattern visible during the Iran conflict. 4 8 Trump offered no crude target, no refining assumption, no tax change, and no deadline, only that gasoline would “eventually” fall below $2. 1

His depiction of Iran collapses on the same inspection. 16 Trump claimed Iran has 300 percent inflation, valueless money and unpaid soldiers. 1 Iran’s Statistical Center reported average annual inflation of 62 percent and year-on-year inflation of 82 percent in early August 2026, with inflation reaching 84.4 percent in early September. 20 16 That is severe, and among the highest in the country’s modern history, but it is not 300 percent. 16 20 The one figure above 300 percent reported in the price data is for a single food item: cooking oil up 383 percent over a year. 16

The “valueless money” half has a real foundation. 21 The rial fell to a record low of about 2.25 million to the dollar on September 5, 2026, after losing roughly 60 percent of its value since March. 21 The slide followed a new U.S. sanctions campaign announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on August 24, 2026 and described as an “economic D-Day.” 14 Iran’s central bank governor pledged a $2 billion injection as the currency broke past 2 million and then 2.1 million in late August and early September. 13

The election is the hinge

There is no verified off-ramp to match the promised end date. 27 Trump has shut the door on peace talks, arguing Iran is trying to shape the midterm outcome by holding out for a weaker Congress that would leave Tehran alone to develop a nuclear weapon, and insisting Tehran cannot hold out. 27 The only “end date” he offered is the election itself: November 3, 2026, when all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats are on the ballot. 28 22 Analysts point to the same pivot point for the opposite reason — rising prices and public opposition to the war may pressure the White House to de-escalate after the midterms, not because a victory is imminent but because the political cost of continuing keeps climbing. 23

Known

  • War continues with no peace talks; fighting in Hormuz. 27
  • National average gasoline is $4.07 to $4.15. 210
  • Iran inflation reported at 84.4%, not 300%. 16

Unknown

  • No mechanism for ending war, lowering oil, or reaching sub-$2 gas.
  • No verified casualty counts, sortie totals, or diplomacy track.

Next

  • Whether fighting, crude above $100, and pump prices move after Nov. 3.
As aired 8 lines
  1. Trump promises $2 gas and an end to the war—right after the election. With oil above $100 and the average gallon at $4.10, that promise would cut the pump price by more than half. But no mechanism, no timeline, no off-ramp—so what actually happens next?
  2. The six-month war has centered here, on the Strait of Hormuz, where the exchange of fire resumed after a monthlong lull. Analysts call it a dangerous, potentially unsustainable military stalemate.
  3. The war began with a strike that killed Iran's supreme leader. It has gone through a lull, and now the exchanges are back—with no end in sight.
  4. The national average sits at about four dollars fifteen. The promise is below two—which would mean more than halving the pump price. The last time that happened was January 2016.
  5. Crude oil is the biggest slice, about sixty-one percent on that breakdown. Add refining, distribution, and taxes, and getting below two dollars means crude has to fall far below current levels—and the tax structure would stay untouched.
  6. The president says Iran has three hundred percent inflation. Iran's Statistical Center reports 84.4 percent year-on-year as of September—severe, among the highest in modern history, but not three hundred.
  7. The rial hit a record low of about two point two five million to the dollar on September 5, after losing roughly sixty percent of its value since March, under a new sanctions campaign that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced in late August.
  8. So what happens next? Nothing in the evidence supports the promised payoff. The war continues, oil is above a hundred dollars, and analysts point to the same election date for the opposite reason—rising costs may pressure the White House to de-escalate, not because victory is near, but because the political price of continuing the war keeps climbing.
