Full storyFive students and an education assistant were killed at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School on February 10, 2026. Before the shooter reached them, she had killed her mother and her 11-year-old half-brother at home. Eight victims died across two locations in the British Columbia community. A new U.S. prosecution now puts the interval between those killing sites at the centre of its accusation. 2 6
Authorities allege that James Cody Bryant, a 30-year-old resident of Bellingham, Washington, knew the killing had begun and continued helping. When Jesse Van Rootselaar, the 18-year-old shooter, could not start the car she would use to reach the school, Bryant allegedly advised her so she could proceed. The significance is not the mechanical detail. It is the alleged decision to assist someone who had already killed two people. 1 7
Bryant was arrested in Bellingham on the morning of October 6 and appeared in federal court in Seattle that afternoon. No plea was entered, and Bryant remained in custody while the government sought detention. The initial appearance did not establish guilt. Bryant is presumed innocent, and no public defence statement has been identified. 19 35
An accusation of participation, not silence
The criminal complaint, filed October 2 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, charges one count of “Conspiracy to Murder Persons in a Foreign Country” under 18 U.S.C. § 956(a)(1) and (a)(2)(A). Its alleged conspiracy period begins in or before August 2025 and continues until about February 10, 2026. The maximum prison penalty is life—not a sentence already imposed. 8 84
The prosecution describes more than a failure to report a threatening conversation. Authorities allege years of online communication, discussions of violence and attack plans in the months before the killings, financial help, encouragement and practical assistance. Discord was used for the communications. Whether that evidence proves Bryant joined and assisted a murder conspiracy remains for the court to decide. 2 4 10
Bryant had the information and ability to alert law enforcement, and even discussed that possibility with the shooter, but he chose not to. Instead, he encouraged and offered assistance to a murderer.
Floyd's October 6 statement is the prosecution's account of a knowing choice, not a judicial finding that Bryant could certainly have prevented the deaths. The claimed agreement and affirmative assistance are central to the accusation. Treating this simply as a case about silence would obscure what prosecutors are alleging; treating their account as proved would erase the work the court has yet to do.
The eight victims behind the count
At home, Van Rootselaar killed Jennifer Jacobs, also known as Jennifer Strang, 39, and Emmett Jacobs, 11. Emmett was her half-brother; CBC corrected an earlier description of him as a stepbrother, with his father confirming the relationship. Van Rootselaar then went to the school, where she killed six people, and died from a self-inflicted wound. The eight-victim total excludes the shooter. 42 71 2
The five students were Abel Mwansa, 12; Ezekiel Schofield, 13; Ticaria Lampert, 12; Zoey Benoit, 12; and Kylie Smith, 12. Education assistant Shannda Aviugana-Durand, 39, was also killed. Her union, the British Columbia General Employees' Union, confirmed that she was a member working at the school. 18 43 83
Coverage differed on the child-victim count. CTV News Vancouver's October 6 broadcast, published October 7, described eight victims including five children. CBC News on October 6 gave the breakdown as five students, one educator and two family members; CTV National's October 6 broadcast reported six children. The established total is six children: the five students plus Emmett, killed at home. Five is the schoolchildren count, not the total across both locations. 4 6 5
A February 13 BBC report counted 27 injured, while February CBC coverage described two people as critically injured. Those are reports from the time of the attack, not October medical updates. No current condition update is established here. 72 20
Small payments, a consequential alleged purpose
The financial evidence is modest in dollar value, but prosecutors allege it helped support the planned attack. Initial announcement estimates put the shoe-related payment at a little over US$100 and a lighter transaction at around US$15. More precise complaint-related reporting describes a November 21, 2025 PayPal transfer of US$124.47, rounded by CBC to about US$125, bearing the note “Happy late birthday.” Authorities allege the shoes were wanted for the attack. 7 10
The figures describe different things. An earlier shoe request concerned roughly C$150; Bryant's reply discussed US$150. Neither is the recorded US$124.47 transfer. Keeping the request, discussion and payment separate matters because the alleged purpose—not a conveniently rounded sum—is what connects the money to the prosecution's case. 10
A January 25, 2026 PayPal transaction of US$14.33 was allegedly connected to a lighter intended for a homemade incendiary device. Bryant also allegedly offered access to a payment card. CTV's October 6 announcement account said officials believed the roughly US$15 transaction had been reversed; fuller payment reporting describes a transfer without establishing its final disposition. That remains unresolved. Neither account proves that a lighter was delivered, used or responsible for an injury. 36 10 7
The alleged attempt to secure an audience also needs to be distinguished from what investigators say actually happened. Prosecutors allege Bryant agreed to record or operate a Twitch livestream and broadcast the attack to increase the shooter's reach or notoriety. Bryant allegedly stayed awake after an overnight work shift so it could be watched. 3
The stream began, ran for about 20 seconds and stopped. Investigators identified one viewing account, Bryant's. The complaint narrative includes Bryant confirming “watching now” and later saying the stream had gone down. Calling it a stream that never started would be inaccurate; calling it a widely watched attack would be unsupported. The evidence presented does not establish that the school killings were visible during those seconds. 6 27 10
Two countries, still unfinished investigations
Discord supplied information to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police about the online connection, after which Canadian investigators connected with U.S. authorities. CNN reported that U.S. Homeland Security was contacted soon after the shooting. At the joint Seattle announcement, Assistant Commissioner Elija Rain, the acting B.C. RCMP commanding officer, said further Canadian charges remained under active consideration. 6 39 7
Investigators continue reviewing material from multiple social-media platforms and other contacts to determine whether anyone else was involved. Bryant's arrest is not proof of a larger organised group. Rain also declined to discuss earlier weapons-related contacts and how the firearms were obtained because relevant information was under court publication restrictions. Those restrictions leave important questions unanswered; they do not establish wrongdoing by any particular person. 6 7
Known
Unknown
- The allegations have not been proved in court. No public defence statement, final disposition of the lighter transaction or established wider conspiracy has been identified.
Next
- The detention hearing will address custody, not guilt. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 20 at 1 p.m. Pacific daylight time, or 20:00 UTC, unless a grand jury indictment changes the procedural path first.
For the families of the eight victims, the charge opens a concrete avenue to examine alleged assistance before and during the attack. Its strongest allegation concerns help offered after killing had already begun. But an arrest is the beginning of that examination, not its conclusion. Responsibility against Bryant has yet to be established.

As aired 31 lines
- U.S. authorities charged James Cody Bryant with conspiring in a mass killing that left eight victims.
- The central allegation is that Bryant kept helping after the first two victims were killed, advising the shooter so she could reach a school. The charge carries up to life in prison, but guilt has not been established.
- What connects Bryant to the movement between two killing sites, and what has a court actually established?
- Bryant, 30, was arrested in Bellingham on the morning of October 6, 2026, and appeared in federal court in Seattle that afternoon. The killings happened months earlier, on February 10, in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.
- Bryant remained in custody. The government sought detention, and no plea was entered. The initial appearance did not decide whether Bryant joined a murder conspiracy. Bryant is presumed innocent, and no public defense statement has been identified.
- The complaint was filed October 2, four days before the arrest announcement. Count One charges conspiracy to murder persons in a foreign country. Its alleged conspiracy period begins in or before August 2025 and continues until about February 10, 2026.
- FBI Special Agent Joseph Rico made the supporting affidavit, signed by telephone before Magistrate Judge Brian A. Tsuchida on October 2. Tsuchida also handled the initial appearance. The maximum prison exposure is life; that is not a sentence already imposed.
- Jesse Van Rootselaar, 18, killed two relatives at home before going to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. The pivotal allegation is that Bryant was in direct contact with her, knew killing had begun, and helped when she could not start the car.
- The alleged advice enabled her to continue toward the school. The operational instructions are not needed to understand the accusation: its significance is the timing, after the home killings and before the school attack. This is alleged affirmative assistance, not simply knowledge of a disturbing conversation.
- Bryant allegedly had opportunities to alert law enforcement and discussed that possibility with the shooter. That does not establish that Bryant could certainly have prevented the deaths. The claimed agreement and encouragement, together with practical help, are central to the conspiracy accusation.
- The alleged relationship lasted years, with communications on Discord and discussion of violence and attack plans in the months before the killings. The accusation describes sustained encouragement, money and technical assistance, rather than one isolated message.
- Eight victims were killed, excluding the shooter. Descriptions differed over how many were children. The established breakdown is five students and an education assistant at school, plus the shooter's mother and 11-year-old half-brother at home.
- Five children were killed at school. Six children were killed across both locations, because Emmett Jacobs, the shooter's 11-year-old half-brother, was killed at home. Five students is the school count, not the total number of child victims.
- At home, the other victim was Jennifer Jacobs, also known as Jennifer Strang, 39. Emmett's relationship to the shooter was corrected from stepbrother to half-brother, with his father confirming that relationship.
- The students were Abel Mwansa, 12; Ezekiel Schofield, 13; Ticaria Lampert, 12; Zoey Benoit, 12; and Kylie Smith, 12. Education assistant Shannda Aviugana-Durand, 39, was also killed. She was a member of the British Columbia General Employees' Union.
- Van Rootselaar died at the school from a self-inflicted wound. February reporting counted 27 injured and described two people as critically injured at that time. Those are historical figures, not an October medical update; no current condition update is established.
- The community's name is Tumbler Ridge. The police-identified shooter is Jesse Van Rootselaar. Spelling variations and the different name used within her family do not change the identification used in this criminal case.
- References to Bryant use different pronouns. Gender identity is not an independently documented finding in this case. The allegation concerns knowing assistance and an agreement to commit murder, not gender identity.
- The alleged payments were small, but their purpose could matter to establishing the claimed agreement. Initial estimates described a little over US$100 for shoes and around US$15 for a lighter. The more precise transaction amounts must be kept separate from those estimates.
- The alleged shoe-related PayPal payment was US$124.47 on November 21, 2025, with the note “Happy late birthday.” A second alleged transaction was US$14.33 on January 25, 2026, for a lighter intended for a homemade incendiary device.
- The earlier shoe request involved roughly C$150. Bryant's reply discussed US$150, while the recorded transfer was US$124.47, rounded elsewhere to about US$125. The requested Canadian-dollar price, the U.S.-dollar discussion and the actual payment are not interchangeable.
- Bryant also allegedly offered access to a payment card. The lighter transaction's final disposition remains unverified: an initial account described a believed reversal, but the fuller transfer account does not confirm it. Delivery, use and any resulting injury are not established.
- The alleged livestream plan sought a wider audience. Bryant allegedly agreed to record or operate a Twitch broadcast and stayed awake after an overnight work shift so the attack could be watched. But the recorded audience was far smaller than that alleged ambition.
- The stream ran for about 20 seconds before stopping. Investigators identified one viewing account, Bryant's. That is neither a stream that never started nor evidence of a widely watched attack. Whether the school killings were visible during those seconds is not established.
- The alleged messages include Bryant confirming “watching now” and then telling Van Rootselaar that the stream had gone down. They describe a brief viewing record and an alleged plan for greater notoriety, not proof that a large audience saw the killings.
- Discord supplied the RCMP with information about the online connection. Canadian investigators connected with U.S. authorities, and U.S. Homeland Security was contacted soon after the shooting. The cross-border inquiry brought together federal prosecutors, FBI investigators and Canadian police.
- The Canadian investigation remains active. Investigators are reviewing material from multiple social-media platforms and other contacts to determine whether anyone else knowingly helped. Further Canadian charges are under consideration, but no larger organized group has been established.
- Earlier weapons-related contacts and how the firearms were obtained remain partly unanswered because relevant details are under court publication restrictions. Investigators may still speak to people about the weapons' origins. Those restrictions do not establish misconduct by any particular person.
- The possible fine is also unresolved. A court account cited US$25,000; the general individual-felony fine provision is US$250,000. The charging statute itself specifies imprisonment, not a fine. No verified hearing transcript or case-specific penalty text reconciles the figures.
- The evidence connecting Bryant to the two killing sites is an alleged pattern of communications, payments and practical help, especially the car advice after the home killings. A court has not established that those allegations prove participation in a murder conspiracy.
- The October 13 detention hearing addresses whether Bryant remains detained; it is not a trial. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 20 at 1 p.m. Pacific daylight time, or 20:00 UTC, unless a grand jury indictment changes that procedural path first.
