Chizhov Gallery’s shopping center announced normal operations on the morning of October 26, 2026, even as reports circulated of a drone exploding at its business tower in central Voronezh. The announcement answered whether the shopping center intended to trade. It did not answer how much damage the tower had suffered—or provide a structural assessment. Across the wider attack, the regional governor reported a preliminary toll of two people killed and 17 injured, including a child. None of those casualties has been linked specifically to the Gallery. 30 35
That leaves two important developments alongside an unresolved question: a reported deadly attack across the Voronezh area, an operational update from a major commercial complex, and no independently verified account of the condition of its business tower.
Governor Aleksandr Gusev acknowledged that Russian air defenses responded over Voronezh and surrounding areas. ASTRA reported explosions, thick smoke and fires at several locations, including residential neighborhoods, according to The Kyiv Independent. The acknowledged defensive response establishes that authorities were confronting an attack; it does not establish what struck any particular building. 1
Open shops, unanswered questions upstairs
The central allegation comes from footage published by ASTRA that The Kyiv Independent described as appearing to show a drone exploding at the Chizhov Gallery business center. Reports describe the building as a 25-story tower integrated into the commercial complex. The claimed impact has circulated widely, but the extent of damage remains unverified. 1 14
The New Voice of Ukraine subsequently attributed identification of the tower to ASTRA’s open-source geolocation analysis. That is an attributed finding, not a documented second investigation. The available accounts do not establish independent authentication of the recording’s time and integrity or provide the underlying geolocation method. Several outlets repeating the identification do not amount to several separate verifications. 11
There is also a practical distinction between the tower and the shopping center. Yandex Maps lists the shopping center at 35 Koltsovskaya Street; Fakty places the business tower at 35A. No primary building record resolves that distinction here. More importantly, the normal-operations announcement concerns the shopping center, not a documented inspection or clearance of every part of the tower. 32 14 30
Kommersant reported the announcement at 09:59 local time on October 26, and Vesti Voronezh also relayed the shopping center’s intention to operate normally. Neither account supplies a technical assessment of tower damage. It would be as unjustified to turn that announcement into an assurance that the tower was unharmed as to turn the reported explosion into a claim that it was destroyed. 30 37
A morning reconstructed from separate reports
The local chronology gives the attack a broad shape, but not an authenticated time for the alleged Gallery impact. All the following times are Moscow time on October 26, 2026.
Reported warnings and explosions
- Around 03:00 Moscow time1
A drone-threat announcement was issued, according to ASTRA’s account relayed by The Kyiv Independent; the time is approximate.
- 05:44 or 05:47 Moscow time2425
Voronezh1.ru places the missile warning at 05:44; RuSamara gives 05:47. The discrepancy remains unresolved.
- About 05:50 Moscow time34
Provoronezh reports that explosions began. This is not a verified timestamp for the alleged tower impact.
- 07:03 Moscow time24
Voronezh1.ru reports the missile all-clear.
Voronezh1.ru and RuSamara gave their differing missile-warning times in October 26 coverage. Without the original notices, there is no basis to choose between them or explain the three-minute gap. A missile warning is also not evidence that a missile struck Chizhov Gallery. The reporting describes one overnight-to-morning episode with multiple reported explosions and fires, not a reliably established sequence of separate strikes. 24 25 1
Residents’ accounts of alerts also differ. Some told ASTRA they had not heard air-raid sirens, while Voronezh1.ru described sirens sounding. Those accounts cannot establish that everyone received an alert—or that no alert sounded anywhere. They record different experiences during the same dangerous morning. 1 24
The toll belongs to the wider attack
The casualty picture changed as the morning progressed. The Kyiv Independent’s initial report, published at 04:57:52 UTC, said there were no immediately confirmed casualty reports. That was a statement about what was known, not a finding that nobody had been hurt. Meduza’s later report, published at 08:47:18 UTC, carried Gusev’s preliminary figures of two killed and 17 injured, including a child. That later account supersedes the early uncertainty about casualties across the wider attack, while remaining an official preliminary toll rather than an independently established total. 1 35
It does not settle what happened at individual locations. ASTRA’s residential-fire reporting drew on eyewitness photographs and videos, but The Kyiv Independent could not verify the damage or distinguish direct drone impacts from falling debris. The causes of those individual fires remain unresolved, as do any building-specific casualty figures. 1
Authorities also claimed that 113 drones were destroyed over the Voronezh urban area and adjacent districts overnight and that morning, including more than 70 directly over the city, according to MK Voronezh. The city figure is part of the larger total, not an additional count. Neither claim has been independently verified, and neither establishes what caused the reported Gallery explosion or the residential fires. 33
Voronezh lies about 200 kilometers from the nearest Ukrainian-held territory in the Kharkiv region, and its surrounding region borders eastern Ukraine. The area has repeatedly faced Ukrainian long-range strikes against military and industrial facilities. That history supplies context, not proof of responsibility for the alleged Gallery impact, whose perpetrator and intended target have not been established. 1
For shoppers, workers and nearby residents, the missing information is concrete: what was damaged, which spaces were assessed, and what caused the fires around homes. A shopping center’s operating announcement and an attack-wide casualty total answer different questions. Neither substitutes for a verified account of what happened to the tower.
As aired 13 lines
- Russian air defenses engaged drones over Voronezh. The governor says the wider attack killed two people and injured seventeen, including a child. A drone reportedly struck the Chizhov Gallery business tower. How much damage did the tower suffer while its shopping center announced normal operations?
- The attack reached a city about two hundred kilometers from the nearest Ukrainian-held territory in the Kharkiv region. Voronezh's surrounding region borders eastern Ukraine. The overnight attack and the morning developments happened on October twenty-sixth, twenty twenty-six.
- Governor Aleksandr Gusev confirmed that air defenses responded over the city and surrounding areas. Explosions, thick smoke and fires were reported at several locations, including residential neighborhoods near apartment buildings.
- Chizhov Gallery combines a business tower and a shopping center in central Voronezh. The tower is described as twenty-five stories. The shopping center is listed at thirty-five Koltsovskaya Street, while the business tower's reported address is thirty-five A.
- A drone reportedly exploded at the business tower. The claim centers on footage said to show the impact. The tower identification has circulated widely, but its actual damage still isn't clear.
- The governor's preliminary toll is two killed and seventeen injured, including a child. Earlier that morning, casualties hadn't yet been confirmed. The later figure covers the wider attack, and nobody has linked those deaths or injuries specifically to Chizhov Gallery.
- People inside a large commercial complex and residents near the reported fires face different questions about safety. A casualty total for the whole attack can't tell families what happened at any particular building.
- A drone warning came around three. The missile warning is timed at five forty-four or five forty-seven. Explosions reportedly began around five fifty. A missile all-clear followed at seven oh-three. These local times don't pinpoint the reported tower impact.
- Some residents said they hadn't heard air-raid sirens. Other accounts describe warnings and sirens sounding. Those experiences don't tell us whether everyone received an alert. The explosions and fires span one overnight-to-morning attack, with no reliable sequence connecting each reported location.
- Authorities claim they destroyed one hundred thirteen drones across the Voronezh urban area and nearby districts. They say more than seventy were directly over the city. The city figure sits within that larger total. These remain official interception claims.
- The region has repeatedly faced Ukrainian long-range strikes against Russian military and industrial facilities. Ukraine's General Staff said its forces struck the Voronezh Semiconductor Plant on June twenty-second. That plant makes electronic components used in Russian missiles and air-defense systems.
- Nobody has identified who was responsible for the reported Gallery impact. The causes of individual residential fires also remain unclear. Direct impacts and falling debris are both possibilities, and the damage at those locations hasn't been fully determined.
- The shopping center announced normal operations that morning. Its announcement gives shoppers an operational update, but supplies no structural assessment of the business tower. The condition of that tower remains unresolved.
