East Lansing police said there was “no known threat to the community” after two off-campus shootings sent five people to hospitals overnight from Halloween into November 1, 2026. But that reassurance was not an announcement that both investigations had been solved: Police Chief Jennifer Brown disclosed people taken into custody in one shooting, while leaving the arrest status in the other unclear. 1 2

Three people suffered gunshot wounds near M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street; two others were wounded near Stoddard and Frye. At Brown’s Sunday afternoon briefing, four of the five were reported stable. The remaining patient’s condition was unknown. Those are November 1 assessments—not verified updates on how the patients are doing now. 1 7

واقعیت‌های کلیدی

  1. 5People hospitalized with gunshot wounds 12
  2. 4Shooting patients reported stable November 1 17
  3. 1Shooting patient’s condition unknown November 1 27

The distinction matters most at M.A.C. and Linden, where two of the three wounded people were stable that afternoon and the third person’s condition was not known. “Unknown” describes a gap in the public account; it does not establish that the person died, was critically injured or had recovered. The injured people’s ages were not disclosed in the verified reporting. 2 7

Two scenes, different custody information

The M.A.C.–Linden shooting happened shortly after midnight. East Lansing Police Lt. Chad Stemen administered medical care to victims, and an early State News account placed officers’ search for a suspect at approximately 1:30 a.m. Police were also reporting no active threat. That early search is established; how it ended is not. 5

Brown did not announce an arrest in that investigation in the account of her afternoon briefing published by East Lansing Info. It would therefore be wrong to say the case had produced a confirmed arrest. It would be equally wrong to turn the early search report into a claim that a suspect remains at large now: no subsequent search or arrest status was verified for this report. 2 5

The custody information came from the other shooting, near Stoddard and Frye in the early morning. Brown said “several” individuals were taken into custody and multiple guns were recovered at that scene. Both people wounded there were hospitalized and reported stable Sunday afternoon. 2 7

Brown also said it was not known whether the recovered guns were the weapons used in that shooting. Recovering a firearm is not the same as establishing who fired it, and taking someone into custody is not proof of charges or guilt. Neither the gun recoveries nor those detentions settle what happened at the separate M.A.C.–Linden scene. 2

The verified account establishes no motive for either shooting and no connection between them. It also supplies no exact time for the Stoddard–Frye incident. Treating the two as a single confrontation would go beyond what investigators have publicly established. 1 2

What witnesses saw—and what remains unsettled

Near M.A.C. and Linden, witnesses told The State News they heard between three and seven shots. One described seeing a person lying on the ground afterward. Another, walking on M.A.C. Avenue, described two groups arguing around a car before an individual emerged from the vehicle holding a gun. 5

Those accounts convey the confusion and danger witnesses encountered, but they are not an official reconstruction. The account of a person holding a gun does not identify who fired. The range of shots people remember hearing is not a verified count of rounds discharged. 5

Even the precise minute of the M.A.C.–Linden shooting remains unsettled. The Detroit News reported about 12:26 a.m. on November 1, citing The State News; The State News’s later November 1 report gave 12:36 a.m. Its initial account also used approximately 12:26 a.m. No verified official clarification reconciles the ten-minute difference. Both versions place the shooting shortly after midnight, but neither minute should be presented as independently settled. 3 1 5

Other early information gaps were subsequently filled. WILX’s late-morning November 1 report said authorities had not released the number shot and described a police scene still active near Linden and M.A.C. The afternoon briefing established the toll: three wounded there and five across both shootings. The earlier absence of a count is superseded, not a continuing disagreement about how many people were hurt. 4 1

Michigan State University police assisted city officers. University spokesperson Amber McCann told The State News that morning that the shootings occurred off campus and did not pose a threat to campus. Another university spokesperson, Emily Guerrant, said none of the shooting victims or suspects were MSU students. That separates their reported university affiliation from the shootings’ proximity to campus; it does not lessen the harm to those wounded or the fear among witnesses. 5 1

“My thoughts are with everyone affected, including those who witnessed these incidents,” MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz said in a November 1 statement. He said student and staff safety remained the university’s priority and promised more information later that day. That was a statement made on the day of the shootings, not a new announcement. 1

Brown likewise said police would release more information as it became available. The consequential gaps remain the subsequent condition of the fifth shooting patient, the outcome of the M.A.C.–Linden suspect search, and whether investigators have linked the recovered guns to the Stoddard–Frye gunfire. A dated assessment of no known community threat answers a public-safety question. It does not answer those investigative ones. 2
