Six killed in Kraków square; three bodies at suspect’s home deepen investigation
به زبان انگلیسی در دسترس است
What connects the six people killed in Kraków’s Main Market Square with the three people found dead at the suspected gunman’s home? That is the central unanswered question after Saturday’s attack: police have the suspect in custody, but investigators have not established a public account of how the violence in the square relates to the deaths discovered about 150 kilometers away.14
Authorities say a man drove into the square and fired indiscriminately from his car at about 3 p.m. local time on November 7, 2026. Police later wounded him in an exchange of fire, detained him and took him to hospital. Six people were reported killed at the square, while the injury count remained provisional at 15 or 16, including two wounded police officers.17
The residential discovery must remain a separate figure. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said two women and one man had been found dead at the suspect’s home in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, northeast of Kraków. He described them as likely members of the suspect’s immediate family, not as people whose identities and relationships had all been conclusively established. The timing and circumstances of their deaths remain unexplained. Reporting a confirmed nine-person killing sequence would go further than the evidence allows.4
What police stopped, and what remains
The attack began in the square’s Sławkowska Street vicinity, according to regional police accounts reported by ABC News. The later police confrontation was elsewhere: local reporting placed an exchange of gunfire at Stradomska and Dietla streets. The available accounts do not establish a precise route or elapsed time between the first shots and the suspect’s detention.755
Being shot and being arrested are not competing versions of the suspect’s fate. They describe successive parts of the response. Officers wounded him, took him into custody and transported him for treatment; reports describe surgery and a serious condition. The clearer accounts do not describe a gunman still at large.1510
Police said the known attacker acted alone and that the situation was under control. That assessment does not close the investigation into his contacts, possible assistance or access to weapons. Nor does it mean the square has reopened. ABC News reported that investigators were examining the weapons and whether anyone else was involved.710
Police spokesperson Katarzyna Cisło described military-style clothing and a military-type long gun, with other weapons and ammunition found in the car. Those descriptions do not establish an exact firearm model, the legal status of each weapon or how the suspect obtained them. Those are consequential questions, not incidental details.1
Even his age remains unsettled in the reporting. NPR’s AP-derived account on November 7 described a 24-year-old Polish citizen; CBS News’s later report that day gave 25. The Independent contained both ages. The later number has not been established as a verified correction, so neither should be treated as settled.1015
The people behind the provisional numbers
The death toll at the square rose from five to six. Police described those killed as four women and two men. Police chief Marek Boroń said a British citizen and three Polish women were among the dead; two victims had not yet been identified at the briefing. These were provisional identification details, not a complete nationality accounting.14
Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said five non-Polish nationals were among the wounded. A U.S. State Department spokesperson told CBS News there was no awareness at that time of Americans being harmed. Neither statement establishes that nationality determined whom the attacker shot.1
The injury figures need more care than a single confident total would suggest. On November 7, CBS News reported at least 15 injured, NPR reported 15 wounded, and Euronews’s later account reported 16. A BBC account explicitly included the wounded suspect in its total of 16, offering a possible explanation—but not a reconciliation of every report.110228
The two wounded officers should not be added again to those totals. Kierwiński said one officer had suffered three gunshot wounds and undergone surgery; his condition was described as serious or critical. The other officer was also wounded by gunfire. Their conditions, especially that of the critically injured officer, are among the most urgent outstanding developments.512
A motive assessment is not proof
Kierwiński described indications of a fascination with far-right ideology, calling the suspect’s views “very radical” and “ultra-nationalistic.” Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz called the attack an act of terror, and Tusk also used terrorism language. These are preliminary official assessments and characterizations—not a demonstrated motive for each death or a final legal classification.126
The distinction matters. Investigators still have to substantiate the planning, explain access to the weapons and determine what happened at the residence. An ideological description cannot substitute for that reconstruction, and it does not establish a wider organization or deliberate targeting of a particular community.
Tusk traveled from Warsaw to Kraków, while Kierwiński praised the officers’ immediate intervention. U.S. Ambassador Tom Rose and EU foreign-policy chief Kaja Kallas expressed solidarity with Poland. Those statements mark the scale of the grief; the investigative answers must come separately.1
Mourning does not mean reopening
The square will belong to us again.
Mayor Łukasz Gibała’s pledge was about recovery, not an announcement that access had resumed. WP’s November 7 on-scene account described a sealed-off attack scene and closed establishments around the square. Residents and visitors were asked to avoid the vicinity while services worked there. The city also closed the square’s horse-carriage stand and replacement stands until further notice.626465
The next meaningful answers are concrete: updated conditions for the wounded, a reconciled casualty count, established identities and circumstances at the residence, and an explicit change to access restrictions. Detaining the suspect ended the immediate pursuit. It did not yet explain the full extent or sequence of the violence.

- A gunman killed six people after opening fire from a car in Kraków. Two police officers are among the wounded, and three bodies have been discovered at the suspect's home. The suspect is detained in hospital. Investigators still have to explain what connects the attack to the deaths at his residence.
- Police say the man drove into Main Market Square and fired indiscriminately at people. The attack began around three in the afternoon on Saturday, November seventh, near Sławkowska Street. Emergency crews continued working behind a cordon afterward.
- The death toll rose from five to six. Police identified those killed as four women and two men. That figure covers the people killed at the square. Authorities later announced a separate discovery at the suspect's residence.
- A British citizen was among those killed. Police chief Marek Boroń said three victims were Polish women, while two victims hadn't yet been identified. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński said five non-Polish nationals were among the wounded. A U.S. State Department spokesperson said there was no awareness at that time of Americans being harmed.
- The injury total varies between fifteen and sixteen. Including the wounded suspect may explain some of that difference, but the totals haven't been fully reconciled. The two wounded officers shouldn't be added again to those figures.
- Kierwiński said one officer suffered three gunshot wounds and underwent surgery. His condition was described as serious or critical. The other officer was also wounded by gunfire. The condition of those patients, especially the critically injured officer, is one of the most urgent developments still awaited.
- Officers wounded the suspect during an exchange of fire away from the initial attack. The confrontation was placed at Stradomska and Dietla streets. Police detained him and took him to hospital, where some accounts describe surgery and a serious condition.
- Police say the known attacker acted alone and that the situation was under control. Investigators are still examining his weapons, contacts and possible assistance. The suspect remains in custody while receiving treatment.
- The suspect is a Polish citizen. His age is also unclear, with descriptions giving twenty-four and twenty-five. Police spokesperson Katarzyna Cisło said he wore military-style clothing and used a military-type long gun.
- Police also described finding other weapons and ammunition in his car. Investigators have to trace how he obtained them. The precise sequence between the first shots and the police confrontation still needs to be reconstructed.
- Three bodies were discovered at the suspect's home in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, about one hundred and fifty kilometers northeast of Kraków. Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the discovery hours after the shooting. Police found two women and one man there.
- Tusk said the three people were likely close family members of the suspect. Their deaths remain separate from the six killings at the square. Investigators haven't explained when or how the people at the residence died.
- The residence links the discovery to the detained suspect. What happened inside it, and how those deaths relate to his actions in Kraków, remains unresolved. Investigators are also examining the planning behind the attack and his motive.
- Kierwiński described indications of a fascination with far-right ideology. He called the suspect's views very radical and ultra-nationalistic. Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz called the attack an act of terror, and Tusk also used terrorism language.
- Those officials' descriptions are preliminary. Investigators still have to substantiate the motive. Kierwiński praised the officers for intervening immediately and apprehending the attacker. Tusk traveled from Warsaw to Kraków and said police were investigating the background and all the circumstances.
- Poland announced national mourning for Sunday and Monday, November eighth and ninth. Kraków's mourning continues through Wednesday, November eleventh. The city is marking flags for mourning and canceling municipal events during its longer observance.
- Mayor Łukasz Gibała pledged, “The square will belong to us again.” He said Kraków would remain open to visitors. Around the attack scene, however, businesses were closed and emergency services were still working inside the cordon.
- U.S. Ambassador Tom Rose expressed solidarity with Poland after the attack. The European Union's foreign-policy chief, Kaja Kallas, offered condolences and said the loss would be felt far beyond Poland. She said Poland didn't stand alone in its grief.
- Residents and visitors have been asked to avoid the square's vicinity while services work there. No reopening has been announced. The city has closed the horse-carriage stand in the square and its replacement stands until further notice.
