At least 17 people died at a single Durga Puja pavilion exit in north Kolkata on 17 October 2026. A seven-year-old girl was among those killed. What should have been an evening of festival visits ended with casualties being taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital and the Chorbagan Sarbojanin pavilion closed to the public.303996
The site has since been sealed for examination. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari described 25 people as receiving treatment, one critically ill. But even the death count remains unresolved: his written statement gives 17, while his hospital remarks distributed by ANI give 19. Seventeen is the supported minimum, not a settled final toll.4936101
Kolkata Police placed the crush at about 7:40 p.m. India time at the exit gate of the pavilion, also known as Sarada Park or Chor Bagan, in the Girish Park police-station area. The site is near Muktaram Babu Street, off Chittaranjan Avenue. It was Maha Saptami, a major day of Durga Puja, and large crowds were visiting pavilions when heavy rain fell.399334
The numbers still need an explanation
Adhikari’s written statement said: “As per reports, 17 individuals have tragically lost their lives, and 25 people are currently undergoing treatment. One person remains in critical condition under close observation.” In one version of his hospital remarks, however, he said 19 had died, including 17 at the scene.49101
The written statement circulated at approximately 19:44 UTC on 17 October; ANI distributed the remarks giving 19 deaths at approximately 19:21 UTC and again at 19:58 UTC. Those are distribution times, not proof of when each remark was made. No explicit explanation reconciles the figures. It would be wrong either to call 17 a confirmed downward correction or to assume that the difference represents two deaths after admission.4936101
A provisional description of the 17 dead listed 13 women, three men and one child. An early update said six deceased people had been identified. Neither account amounts to a completed casualty register, and the early identification figure does not establish how many remained unidentified later.3096102
The injury figures need a different distinction. Adhikari’s 25 is a count of people undergoing treatment. Police said approximately 35 people had been transported to Calcutta Medical College. India Today’s located headline reported at least 35 injured, with its page-title wording saying over 35; AajTak reported 40. These are not separate groups to add together, nor has anyone established a final total of everyone injured.493919
A hospital-treatment count can differ from an earlier transport count, but no patient-level reconciliation explains these particular numbers. Some injured people were subsequently treated at other hospitals. Minister Umesh Rai initially described the injured as stable; Adhikari’s later assessment identified one critical patient and 24 out of danger. The earlier reassurance cannot stand as the current condition of every patient.34101
Rain is not the whole explanation
Rai described a sudden influx of people seeking shelter and raised the possibility that a whistle or announcement prompted a rush inside. Adhikari also referred to an organisers’ announcement and shortcomings in the committee’s arrangements. These are consequential accounts for investigators to test, not a completed explanation of what happened first.3410036
Witnesses described narrow entrances and exits, inadequate lighting and misleading instructions. Some reports referred to pressure on a gate or a section of the structure collapsing. India Today’s title mentioned a section collapsing; The Hindu’s photo caption described an exit gate collapsing under crowd pressure. Neither description establishes that a collapse initiated the crush rather than occurring during it.61612
The distinction matters. Saying people moved toward shelter describes their movement; it does not explain why the available space and crowd controls failed to keep them safe. Investigators still need to establish the sequence, who controlled admissions and exits, and which reported conditions contributed. There is no verified gate-width measurement, completed lighting assessment or established finding of an emergency-response failure.
Police reinforcements, firefighters, a disaster-management team, ambulances and medical teams were sent. Rescuers removed people to hospital, and authorities closed the pavilion before sealing it for examination. Police and forensic personnel began preliminary work, including review of CCTV footage. Their attendance establishes a response, not how quickly help reached every person or whether that response was adequate.383936
Responsibility goes beyond a resignation
The organising committee’s general secretary, Jayanta Banerjee, and other office-bearers tendered their resignations, taking moral responsibility, AajTak reported. That is an organisational consequence, not a legal finding about who made the decisions governing crowd movement. Adhikari has said anyone found negligent will face legal action.7736
The chief minister has also promised a judge-led investigation and said he would write to the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. His written statement promised steps toward constituting “a STF under a Sitting Judge”; other reporting called the proposed body an SIT. The substantive point is that a judicially led inquiry has been promised, not that an appointed judge and published terms of reference are already in place. Preliminary police, forensic and special-task-force work must not be confused with that proposed process.4984101
The state announced Rs 25 lakh—Rs 2.5 million—and a government job for each bereaved family. Adhikari’s verbal remarks also promised Rs 5 lakh, or Rs 500,000, for each injured person and full coverage of medical treatment costs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced separate assistance through the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund: Rs 2 lakh per death and Rs 50,000 per injured person. Receipt of the money, jobs and reimbursement has not been confirmed.49101861
Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata after the incident and spoke with Adhikari. His Sunday, 18 October programmes, including Belur Math and pavilion visits, were cancelled or postponed so he could visit the injured. That hospital visit remains an announced plan, not a confirmed event. State programmes involving the chief minister, ministers and legislators were also cancelled for Sunday.515434
Several days of Durga Puja remain. Rai urged other organisers to provide more entry and exit points, improve lighting and act when crowds become excessive; Adhikari called for coordination with police and proper exit routes. Those warnings do not establish identical defects at every venue. They do make clear that crowd safety elsewhere cannot wait for the Chorbagan investigation to finish.70100
For affected families, the immediate tests are concrete: the critical patient’s condition, an explained casualty register, delivery of the promised support and an investigation that establishes how this exit became fatal. The state’s toll-free emergency helpline is 1800-3455678; an additional emergency contact is 033-22141310.4942

Kolkata Crush: Seven Arrested as New Crowd Rules Face Their First Test
Gaya ng isinahimpapawid
- Crowds crushed together at a festival exit, killing at least seventeen people.
- A Durga Puja pavilion in north Kolkata is now sealed. One of twenty-five people receiving treatment is critically ill. Investigators must establish how the crush began and who controlled the crowd's movement.
- The crush happened at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin pavilion, also called Sarada Park, in the Girish Park area. It's near Muktaram Babu Street, off Chittaranjan Avenue. Calcutta Medical College received casualties.
- Police place the crush at about seven-forty in the evening on October seventeenth. It was Maha Saptami, a major day of Durga Puja. Large crowds were visiting festival pavilions when heavy rain fell.
- Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's written statement gives seventeen deaths. His hospital remarks give nineteen, including one version saying seventeen died at the scene. He hasn't explained the difference. Seventeen remains the supported minimum, and the final toll is unresolved.
- We don't know whether those figures reflect deaths after admission or a counting error. The written figure doesn't explain what happened to the higher number.
- A seven-year-old girl was among those killed. The provisional description of seventeen victims lists thirteen women, three men and one child. Officials initially identified six of the dead. Some injured people were subsequently treated at other hospitals.
- Early injury estimates range from thirty-five to about forty. Adhikari says twenty-five people are receiving treatment. Police say about thirty-five were transported to Calcutta Medical College. These figures shouldn't be added together. Nobody has reconciled a final total of everyone injured.
- Minister Umesh Rai initially described the injured as stable. Adhikari's assessment identifies one critical patient among the twenty-five receiving treatment, with twenty-four out of danger. That leaves one family still facing an immediate medical emergency.
- People waiting outside moved forward to seek shelter from the rain. Some fell on the road. Rai described a sudden influx and suggested a whistle or announcement might have prompted people to rush inside.
- Adhikari also referred to an organisers' announcement and shortcomings in the committee's arrangements. Witnesses described narrow entrances and exits, inadequate lighting and misleading instructions. Investigators still have to establish which conditions contributed and what happened first.
- Some descriptions mention pressure on a gate or part of the structure collapsing. It's not yet confirmed whether a collapse triggered the crush. Investigators must also examine the exits, lighting and emergency response before assigning responsibility.
- Police reinforcements, firefighters, a disaster-management team and ambulances with medical teams were sent. Rescuers took people to hospital. Authorities closed the pavilion to visitors, then sealed it for examination. Police and forensic personnel began preliminary work, including reviewing CCTV footage.
- Organisers, private security personnel and on-duty staff have been detained for questioning. About ten people, including five organisers, were reportedly detained, although that number hasn't been confirmed. Police are investigating their roles in admissions, exits and crowd movement.
- The organising committee's general secretary, Jayanta Banerjee, and other office-bearers tendered their resignations, taking moral responsibility. Criminal responsibility still has to be determined. Adhikari says anyone found negligent will face legal action.
- Adhikari has promised a judge-led investigation. He says he'll write to the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. A judge hasn't been appointed to that proposed inquiry. Police, forensic specialists and a special task force have already begun preliminary work.
- The state has announced twenty-five lakh rupees and a government job for each bereaved family. Injured people are promised five lakh each, plus treatment costs. Central assistance is two lakh per death and fifty thousand rupees per injured person.
- Those are separate promises of support. Families' receipt of the money, jobs and reimbursement hasn't been confirmed.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the central assistance through his national relief fund. Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata after the incident and spoke with Adhikari. Shah plans to visit injured people after cancelling or postponing his Sunday programmes.
- Those programmes included Belur Math and festival pavilion visits on October eighteenth. State programmes involving the chief minister, ministers and legislators were also cancelled for Sunday.
- Several days of Durga Puja are still ahead. Rai urged other organisers to provide more entry and exit points, improve lighting in crowded or dark spaces, and intervene when crowds become excessive. Adhikari called for coordination with police and proper exit routes.
- The state has activated a toll-free emergency helpline at one eight zero zero, three four five, five six seven eight. An additional emergency contact is zero three three, two two one four, one three one zero.

- #WATCH | Kolkata's Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja stampede incident | West Bengal Minister Umesh Rai says, "...Those inclined toward politics will find an opportunity to play politics anywhere; however, I believe that in such adverse circumstances, the most significant humanitarian gesture is to stand by those who are injured and the families who have lost their loved ones. It would be far better to keep politics out of this. As for a message—organizers at all Puja pandals should consider increasing the number of entry and exit points. In areas where crowds are dense or where pandals have been set up in poorly lit (dark) spaces, proper lighting arrangements must be made. With Durga Puja set to continue for the next three to four days, if you notice an excessive crowd at your pandal, take immediate steps to manage it. We want Durga Puja to be celebrated and for people to enjoy themselves, but it is essential that no accidents occur. The organizers of the Durga Puja celebrations mu...
