Sciences · Pollution des rivièresLa mort de truites dans le comté de Down menace des années de restauration des rivièresRédigé 5 novembre 2026 à 14:03 UTCRegarderTranscription0:07Pollution has killed brown and sea trout across three rivers.0:11The loss includes fish returning to spawn, threatening the next generation as well0:16as fish already living there.0:17What caused the pollution, and how far could this set back a river already0:21recovering from earlier fish kills?0:23Inler Angling Club Secretary Glenn McKibben estimates about one thousand fish have0:29died.0:29That gives a sense of the scale facing the people caring for these waters, while0:34investigators work to determine the final number.0:37The Department for Agriculture, Environment, and Rural Affairs, known as Dara, has0:42opened an investigation.0:44It's working with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency to trace the pollution.0:48A member of the public reported the incident on Tuesday morning.0:52The fish died in the Grantia, Ballystockart, and Inler Rivers in County Down.0:57The river system is associated with Comber, where the Inler is also known as the1:01Enler.1:02Both resident brown trout and migratory sea trout have been affected.1:06The returning fish were coming back to reproduce.1:09Losing adults at that point can reduce the fish available to produce the next1:14generation, so the consequences can extend beyond the immediate death toll.1:18Many migratory trout move into smaller tributaries, the streams feeding a large.1:36McKibben says the timing and location made this especially damaging.1:41He described current and future fish stocks obliterated for years to come.1:46That's his assessment of the loss.1:49Investigators haven't announced a recovery timetable.1:52McKibben also warns of knock-on effects for resident kingfishers, herons, and1:57otters.1:58Those animals depend on the river's food web.2:01His concern reaches beyond the trout themselves to the wildlife supported by the2:05same water.2:06Volunteers had already spent years.2:08Trying to bring this river back, McKibben called the latest loss soul destroying for2:14members working to improve it.2:15He said the river was still recovering from major pollution incidents in2013 and20152:22.2:22In2013 , almost five thousand brown and sea trout were found dead in the Enler near2:27Comber.2:29In2015 , up to300 died, with two separate fish kills suspected.2:35Each figure describes an earlier incident on this river.2:38A restoration account published in December2016 , described the club rebuilding a2:43wild trout fishery using compensation following the2013 pollution.2:48The river's recovery had already required sustained work and resources before this2:53latest setback.2:54McKibben is also challenging how waterways are protected.2:57He said they continue to be treated like sewers, and argued that the fines usually3:03imposed after pollution incidents fail to deter them.3:07He called the current system broken.3:09Club chairperson David Piper described the loss as particularly disappointing for3:13people who dedicate their time to the river.3:16The club wants local representatives and authorities to prioritize rivers and direct3:21resources towards investigators haven't yet identified what entered the water or who3:26was responsible.3:27They still have to determine the full fish toll.3:30For this river's recovery, the immediate setback is the loss of resident trout and3:35returning spawning fish across three waterways.Lire l’articleChronologie de l’histoireHeyDex
