Investigators have named the SUV where the October 23 blaze began. What ignited it—and whether a recalled power-seat motor was involved—remains unconfirmed.

- FOX 13’s follow-up publicly identifies the starting vehicle as a 2023 Kia Telluride. The date investigators reached that finding is not established.
A 2023 Kia Telluride parked at Salt Lake City International Airport on Thursday night was the starting point of a fire that burned roughly a dozen vehicles the next morning. The SUV had been left in the long-term economy lot, where travelers park their cars while away. Salt Lake City fire investigators have now publicly named the vehicle—but not what ignited it.1
The identification, reported by FOX 13 News Utah, supplies the make, model and year missing from the earlier account of the October 23, 2026, blaze. It does not establish a mechanical failure, a connection to a recall or manufacturer responsibility. Officials still cannot say exactly why the fire began.1
HeyDay News reported on October 24 that roughly a dozen parked cars had been damaged, no injuries had been reported and all affected vehicles had been towed. We also reported that investigators had identified the vehicle of origin, without its make, model or year being named. The new information fills that gap; it is not the first announcement that investigators had traced the fire to a particular vehicle.8
The fire and the follow-up

FOX 13’s follow-up publicly identifies the starting vehicle as a 2023 Kia Telluride. The date investigators reached that finding is not established.
The timing of the update needs that distinction. Utah News dates the FOX 13 story to October 29, while the retrieved FOX report carries an October 30 publication timestamp. Neither account establishes the precise day investigators identified the Telluride. The defensible update is that the vehicle’s details have now been published, not that investigators made the discovery today.12
Roughly a dozen, not twelve total losses
The fire department initially reported 12 vehicles damaged. Airport spokesperson Nancy Volmer estimated 11 or 12 affected, while initial FOX 13 coverage described at least 12 vehicles damaged or destroyed. The follow-up uses “roughly a dozen” burned. Together, those accounts establish the approximate scale of the fire, not a final count of cars that were beyond repair.541
The department said wind and the proximity of the parked vehicles helped the flames spread. That accounts for how a fire beginning in one vehicle could reach others; it does not identify the source of the first flames. Our October 24 account described an electrical malfunction as a possibility investigators were examining, rather than a confirmed cause.48
For the owners, the immediate consequence was damage to cars they had left behind while traveling. By our earlier report, the affected vehicles had been removed from the lot. That account did not establish where they were taken or what arrangements had been made for their owners, and the new identification does not resolve those practical questions.8
The recall question remains a question
The Telluride’s model year makes a recall relevant to the investigation—but not an explanation for the fire. FOX 13 reports that more than 462,000 Tellurides from model years 2020 through 2024 are covered by a recall involving a malfunctioning power-seat motor. A 2023 SUV falls within that year range; officials have not confirmed whether this particular vehicle was included.1
There are two separate gaps: whether the airport SUV was subject to the recall, and whether the power-seat motor sparked the blaze. Officials have confirmed neither. Naming a model that appears within a recall’s year range cannot substitute for establishing the individual vehicle’s status or the component that failed.1
An October 30 item from We are Home attributes the fire to a seat-motor defect. That account goes further than FOX 13’s report of the investigators’ findings, which explicitly leaves both the cause and the recall connection unconfirmed. A seat-motor cause should therefore not be treated as established.61
The recall nevertheless carries a concrete precaution for owners who received the relevant notice: park outside, away from structures or other vehicles, until repairs are finished. That is advice for vehicles awaiting the recall repair, not evidence about what happened in the airport lot.1
The investigation has supplied a specific starting vehicle. The consequential finding still missing is what ignited it. Until investigators establish that, the Telluride identification narrows the inquiry without settling the cause.

2023 Kia Telluride identified as starting vehicle in Salt Lake airport fire
כפי ששודר
- Investigators have named a Kia Telluride as the starting vehicle in the airport fire.
- The flames damaged roughly a dozen parked vehicles at Salt Lake City International Airport. The newly public identification narrows the investigation.
- On October 24, we reported that roughly a dozen cars had been damaged and the affected vehicles had been towed. We also reported that investigators had identified the starting vehicle. Its make, model and year weren't named then.
- What ignited that SUV, and could a recalled component have played a role?
- The fire broke out in the airport's long-term economy parking lot on October 23. The emergency call came at about six that morning, while travelers' vehicles were parked there during their trips.
- The fire department said wind and the cars' proximity helped the flames spread. It initially counted twelve damaged vehicles. Airport spokesperson Nancy Volmer estimated eleven or twelve. The follow-up still puts the damage at roughly a dozen vehicles burned. There's no final count of how many were total losses.
- The starting vehicle was a 2023 Kia Telluride. It had been parked in the lot Thursday night, before the Friday-morning fire. Salt Lake City fire investigators have now supplied the vehicle details missing from the earlier account.
- No injuries had been reported when we covered the fire on October 24. By then, the affected vehicles had been removed from the lot. For their owners, the damage was to cars they'd left behind while traveling.
- More than 462,000 Tellurides are covered by a recall involving a malfunctioning power-seat motor. The recall spans model years 2020 through 2024, but officials haven't confirmed whether this particular 2023 SUV was included.
- An electrical malfunction was one possibility investigators were examining when we covered the fire. Naming the SUV gives them a specific vehicle to investigate, but the model year alone can't explain how the flames began.
- Owners who received the relevant recall notice are advised to park outside, away from structures or other vehicles, until repairs are finished. That precaution applies while they wait for the recall repair; it doesn't explain the airport fire.
- Investigators have traced the airport fire to the 2023 Kia Telluride. They still haven't determined what ignited it. Officials also haven't confirmed that a power-seat motor sparked the blaze.
