- A further medical update or an official custody or charging decision would materially change the account. No next medical briefing or court date has been announced.
Helen Haines is alive and stable, her husband says—but surgeons could not save her remaining leg. The independent MP for Indi has now lost both legs after the alleged vehicle attack outside her Wangaratta electorate office, leaving her family with relief at her survival and the prospect of a recovery whose outcome is still unclear.1
The announcement, reported by The Independent on October 21, changes the central medical fact in our previous account. On October 20, HeyDay News reported that Haines had lost one leg and that surgeons at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital were working to save the other. Her husband Phil’s update confirms that effort did not succeed.
Helen is alive and she’s stable. That is the most important thing for our family.
According to The Independent, surgeons amputated Haines’s left leg on Monday, October 19, and had hoped to save her right. The report does not give a date or time for the second operation. Phil Haines said her “recovery will be long and difficult”.1
His statement offers a new family assessment of her condition, not a treating-clinician prognosis. “Stable” does not establish that she has left critical care, what further treatment she needs or how her longer-term recovery will proceed. Earlier reports describing her as critical, or critical but stable, concerned the period before this announcement and should not be read as fresh assessments after the second amputation.12
Phil also spoke about the person behind the medical update, describing his wife as compassionate, caring and loving, and supportive of her family and community. “We are grateful and thankful that, at this stage, both her heart and her mind are in good shape,” he said. Those are a husband’s words about his wife, not a clinical assessment of neurological function.1
The recovery still has no timetable
The family’s announcement answers whether surgeons could save Haines’s remaining leg. It does not yet provide a patient-specific rehabilitation programme, prosthetic plan, discharge date or timetable for returning to work. No date for another medical announcement has been established in the available reporting. The distinction matters: reassurance about her immediate condition is not a forecast of the months ahead.
The strongest dated accounts place the incident on Monday, October 19. Shepparton News explicitly gives that date, while a police charging update reproduced by Mirage News on October 20 describes it as happening “yesterday afternoon”. An earlier ABC account dated October 19 also used “yesterday”, implying October 18; that discrepancy has not been independently reconciled. The charging update’s approximately 3:40pm custody time is not an established time of impact.13012926
Charges, custody and the next hearing
Edge FM reported those offences as dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. These are reported charge descriptions, not wording independently checked against an original charge sheet. They remain allegations to be tested in court; no plea or finding of guilt has been established.140118
ABC also reported two cannabis-related charges, including cultivating cannabis. The available account does not identify the other cannabis offence, so the three attack-related charges should not be mistaken for a complete inventory of the case.3
ABC’s court reporting gives December 24, 2026, as the deadline for police to complete their brief of evidence, and February 4, 2027, as the date of a committal mention at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court. Those dates have not been checked against an original court order or listing. A committal mention concerns the progress of the criminal proceedings before any trial; it is not a verdict.3143
Police say the investigation is continuing and have not ruled out further charges. The vehicle’s precise path and number of impacts remain unresolved, as does the motive for the alleged attack. Neither the severity of Haines’s injuries nor the charge involving a Commonwealth public official establishes political targeting or a prior relationship between her and the accused.2
For now, the medical and legal developments answer different questions. Her family has confirmed a devastating surgical outcome while offering reassurance that she is alive and stable. The court process has advanced, but has not established guilt or supplied a final explanation of what happened.

Helen Haines’s second amputation: clearer timing, uncertain recovery
Sesuai tayangan
- Surgeons have amputated Helen Haines's second leg. Her husband says she's alive and stable, and faces a long and difficult recovery.
- On October 20, we reported that Haines had lost one leg and surgeons were working to save the other. Her husband's announcement now confirms they couldn't save her remaining leg.
- What does her family's update tell us about her recovery, and where does the criminal case stand?
- Haines is 65 and has represented Indi as an independent since May 2019. Voters re-elected her in 2022 and 2025. Before entering parliament, she worked as a nurse, midwife and health researcher.
- Phil Haines says, “Helen is alive and she’s stable.” He called that the most important thing for their family. He says recovery will be long and difficult. Her longer-term prognosis is still unclear.
- Surgeons amputated her left leg on Monday and had hoped to save her right. Her husband hasn't given a date for the second operation. His description of her as stable doesn't tell us whether she's left critical care.
- A car struck Haines outside her electorate office on Murphy Street in Wangaratta, in north-eastern Victoria, on Monday, October 19. She received treatment in Wangaratta before being airlifted to Melbourne's Alfred Hospital for emergency surgery.
- Haines underwent emergency surgery after the collision. On October 20, we described her as critically injured while surgeons tried to save her other leg. Her husband's latest announcement changes the outcome of that effort.
- Phil described his wife as compassionate, caring and loving, and supportive of her family and community. He also said, “We are grateful and thankful that, at this stage, both her heart and her mind are in good shape.”
- Brendan Nugent, 43, appeared at Wangaratta Magistrates' Court on October 21. The criminal case has advanced from his arrest and questioning to charges and a court appearance.
- Nugent is accused of dangerous driving causing serious injury and intentionally causing serious injury. He also faces a charge of causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. These allegations still have to be tested in court.
- Nugent didn't apply for bail and remained in custody. Police say their investigation is continuing and they haven't ruled out further charges. Investigators are still working to reconstruct the vehicle's path and the number of impacts. Police haven't explained a motive for the alleged attack.
- Police are due to complete their brief of evidence by December 24, 2026. Nugent's next appearance is scheduled for February 4, 2027, for a committal mention at Wangaratta Magistrates' Court. That hearing deals with the progress of the criminal case before any trial.
