More than 600,000 electricity customers across the Southeast were still without power late Saturday after Hurricane Isaias. Hundreds of thousands of connections to homes and businesses—not individual people—were awaiting restoration as fallen trees blocked roads and damaged communications complicated recovery. For some households, the next threat could arrive before reliable electricity returns: damaging thunderstorms and possible tornadoes forecast for Sunday afternoon.4490
WRAL’s report, published at 23:57 UTC October 10, listed more than 408,000 customers without service in Florida, 153,000 in Alabama and more than 8,000 in North Carolina, mostly in the west. Those states are only a partial breakdown of the regional total. The figures describe a late-Saturday snapshot, not Sunday’s current conditions or a completed restoration count.4
On October 9, we reported Isaias approaching the Florida Panhandle as a Category 3 hurricane, with landfall and its consequences still ahead. The established landfall account supersedes that approach-era description: Isaias crossed the coast near Destin around 8:30 p.m. CDT Friday as a Category 2 hurricane with 105-mph sustained winds. Weakening before shore reduced its intensity; it did not spare every household, road or power line.366
By 4 a.m. CDT Saturday, the National Hurricane Center classified Isaias as post-tropical, with 35-mph sustained winds near Montgomery. At 10 a.m., the Weather Prediction Center issued a subsequent bulletin placing its center about 50 miles south of Birmingham, still with 35-mph winds. These are dated Saturday positions, not a verified Sunday location. The change of issuing office also means the last recovered NHC advisory was not the end of public bulletins.369463
The blackout is its own emergency
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said about 16,000 utility workers were restoring service Saturday morning. But a workforce count is not a completion deadline. Santa Rosa County emergency officials said most county roads were impassable because of trees or power lines; Alabama’s Monroe County described severe damage to communications and electricity infrastructure and building repairs expected to take days.176
The outage snapshots cannot be turned into a tidy restoration curve. NPR reported about 780,000 customers out in Florida, Alabama and Georgia at 11:50 a.m. EDT Saturday. The Guardian’s later Saturday report gave a rounded Southeast total of about 843,000. WRAL subsequently reported more than 600,000. Different observation times and coverage prevent a reliable calculation of the repair rate or percentage restored.1764
There is a genuine unresolved problem with the claimed peak. Global News, in its report published October 11, called approximately 840,000 customers the peak; NPR’s October 10 account had already described nearly 900,000 earlier Saturday. Fox News separately reported more than a million people without electricity—a different unit. None supplies the common accounting needed to establish a stormwide maximum.21714
A WSFA report published early Sunday described more than 100,000 still without power in Alabama Saturday night, but supplied no precise observation time or completion estimate. WTVM reported more than 7,000 Barbour County customers lost service during the overnight storms; that impact count does not establish how many remained disconnected when the report appeared.461460
At least four distinct storm-related deaths remain established: two in Florida and two in Alabama. NPR’s October 10 minimum of two was preliminary, superseded by the later four-death reporting—not a competing final tally. Global News’s report published October 11 and NBC’s Saturday-night account retained at least four; neither certified a final toll.1725
In Florida’s Escambia County, a woman died when a tree fell onto her home late Friday. A separate man died of carbon monoxide poisoning after a generator ran in a closed or unventilated garage; four relatives were hospitalized with non-life-threatening poisoning. Alabama’s fatalities involved a tree falling onto a Birmingham home and a Barbour County driver whose wreck involved fallen trees. The accounts describe four incidents, not additional victims each time a place name or description changes.379382388457
The garage death exposes a preventable danger of recovery. Never operate a generator indoors or in a garage. And when clearing debris, do not assume a fallen electricity line is de-energized because nearby houses have lost power. Surviving the hurricane’s crossing does not make its aftermath safe.7314
Sunday brings a different weather threat
The Saturday-issued Storm Prediction Center outlook places portions of North Carolina, Virginia and southeast Maryland in a Slight Risk for widely scattered severe storms capable of a few tornadoes and damaging gusts Sunday afternoon. Its valid period runs from 12:00 UTC October 11 through 12:00 UTC October 12. It is a forecast, not evidence that tornadoes have occurred.490
WRAL meteorologist Chris Michaels forecast a local stronger-storm window from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, with an elevated Level 2 risk beginning around late morning or midday. The exact county boundary and timezone of that video forecast were not independently established, so it should not be converted into a precise warning deadline or applied statewide.19
Rainfall risk varies sharply by place. Saturday’s NWS Raleigh briefing forecast 1–2 inches across central North Carolina, locally higher, with the greatest totals over the Triad and southern Coastal Plain. It assessed the overall flash-flood threat as low while allowing for isolated flooding. Separate regional coverage emphasized mountain and foothill concerns. Neither is a uniform statewide forecast.486489
Damage is clear, measurements remain incomplete
Reported Panhandle gusts reached 114 mph in Milton, 102 mph in Pensacola and 97 mph in Gulf Breeze, with a 116-mph reading reported in the Santa Rosa area. These are local gusts, not the hurricane’s sustained wind speed everywhere. The precise station behind the Santa Rosa reading remains unresolved.1521
Surge accounts also remain unreconciled. NPR’s October 10 report described about five feet; CBS News’s report that day said up to nine feet along the Gulf Coast. The available official excerpts establish dangerous coastal water impacts but do not verify a nine-foot observation with a station, timestamp and reference level. Water above normal sea level, surge above predicted tide and depth over dry ground are different measurements. A forecast of nine feet is not proof nine feet was measured.1715366
Farther from Destin, FOX 13 footage supports coastal flooding in St. Petersburg around midnight into Saturday. CBS carried a storm chaser’s estimate of 2–3 feet and descriptions of beach inundation and waves overtopping a jetty. Those heights remain observer estimates, not verified gauge records or a regional maximum.4723
Transport recovery was likewise incomplete in Saturday’s assessments. Pensacola International Airport remained closed to commercial traffic for inspections; Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport had reopened with severe delays and most departures canceled. I-10 and U.S. Route 98 were reported open Saturday morning, but that did not clear obstructed local roads. No later full-normalization announcement is established here.617
Offshore recovery has its own inspection clock. The Saturday regulator account reported 68.76% of Gulf oil output and 57.44% of gas output shut in at 11 a.m. CDT, with 113 staffed platforms and eight drilling rigs evacuated. Evacuation is not proof of damage, and Shell sending personnel back is not proof production restarted. Complete inspection results and Sunday restoration volumes remain unavailable.76
DOE’s October 10 emergency exchange authorized up to four million barrels of reserve crude, with ceilings of two million each for ExxonMobil and BP America. Borrowed oil must be returned with premium barrels in 2027. Authorization establishes neither delivery nor lower gasoline prices; delivered volumes, premium quantities and exact repayment deadlines remain unresolved.712
Our October 9 Lower Plaquemines report left the warning clock unresolved. Official NWS New Orleans text now establishes all tropical watches and warnings in its area had been canceled by 10:15 p.m. CDT that night, although coastal flood advisories persisted. The previously established parish notice records Saturday’s lifting of the limited Tidewater Road business evacuation and reopening of two gates to marine traffic. Those specific transitions are not a blanket all-clear.465278397

Isaias leaves 600,000-plus customers without power ahead of Sunday storm risk
Sesuai tayangan
- On October 9, we reported Isaias approaching as Category 3. It landed as Category 2.
- More than 600,000 electricity customers across the Southeast were still without power late Saturday. At least four people have died, and Sunday brings another threat of damaging storms. Can households regain reliable electricity and warning systems before those storms arrive?
- Florida carried the largest listed outage total in that late Saturday snapshot. Across the region, families were waiting for electricity while crews faced fallen trees, blocked roads and damaged communications infrastructure.
- Santa Rosa County emergency officials said most county roads were impassable Saturday because of trees or power lines. In Alabama's Monroe County, officials described severe damage to communications and electricity infrastructure, with building repairs expected to take days.
- Florida had more than 408,000 customers out, and Alabama had 153,000. North Carolina had more than 8,000, mostly in the west. Other affected states also contributed to the regional total.
- A later Saturday-night update put Alabama's remaining outages above 100,000. Barbour County also had more than 7,000 customers lose power during the overnight storms. That county figure describes the storm's impact, without saying how many connections were still out afterward.
- About 780,000 customers were out late Saturday morning in Florida, Alabama and Georgia. An afternoon regional snapshot put outages around 843,000. The later total exceeded 600,000, but changing coverage and observation times prevent a reliable repair-rate calculation.
- The peak has been described as about 840,000 customers, even though an earlier count approached 900,000. A separate million-plus estimate counted people. Electricity connections and people can't be compared as if they're the same measure.
- Florida officials put about 16,000 utility workers on restoration duty Saturday morning. Around 5,000 National Guard personnel were also deployed. Earlier standby and preparation counts covered different groups and times, so they can't be added into one workforce.
- There isn't a complete timetable for restoring service. Search-and-rescue teams remained available because saturated areas of north-central Florida could still need water rescues. The loss of electricity has also created a deadly hazard inside homes.
- Two people died in Florida's Escambia County, one beneath a fallen tree and another from generator exhaust. Alabama's deaths involved a tree falling on a Birmingham home and a Barbour County driver's wreck involving fallen trees.
- The Escambia County woman was inside her home when the tree fell late Friday. Her husband, Joey Williams, said he was trapped but escaped while she couldn't. A relative said his legs were crushed. In the separate generator incident, four other family members were hospitalized with non-life-threatening carbon monoxide poisoning.
- The generator had run in a closed or unventilated garage. Never operate a generator indoors or in a garage. Its exhaust can kill even after hurricane winds have passed, and a power outage doesn't make that setup safe.
- The early confirmed minimum was two deaths. It later rose to at least four as separate cases were included. The Birmingham and Pensacola descriptions overlap with those same victims. Four remains a minimum rather than a final toll.
- The Barbour County driver was taken to a medical facility in Dale County and later pronounced dead. The Birmingham death occurred after a tree hit a single-family home in the Huffman area. Differing overnight times describe that same incident.
- Isaias came ashore near Destin around 8:30 p.m. Central on Friday, October 9, with sustained winds of 105 miles an hour. It weakened before crossing the coast, after the earlier Category 3 approach.
- By four Saturday morning, Isaias was post-tropical with 35-mile-an-hour winds near Montgomery. Six hours later, its center was 50 miles south of Birmingham, still at 35 miles an hour. Those positions describe Saturday's storm.
- The Weather Prediction Center continued issuing bulletins after the hurricane center's morning update. Its Saturday bulletin showed movement north-northwest at 10 miles an hour. The earlier bulletin showed movement north at 14. The inland rain and severe-weather threat continued as the storm weakened.
- Reported gusts reached 116 miles an hour in the Santa Rosa area, 114 in Milton, 102 in Pensacola and 97 in Gulf Breeze. These short bursts differ from the hurricane's sustained wind measurement.
- Pensacola's 102-mile-an-hour reading was identified at City Hall. The precise instrument behind the Santa Rosa reading hasn't been identified. Before landfall, Orange Beach recorded a 72-mile-an-hour gust, and a buoy off Pensacola recorded 69. Brewton, Alabama, also had reported 70-mile-an-hour gusts and downed trees and lines.
- Coastal water-height estimates range from about five feet to a claim of up to nine feet. Nobody has provided an official measurement identifying where and when that nine-foot height occurred, with a common reference level for comparison.
- Water above normal sea level, water above the predicted tide and flooding depth on dry ground measure different things. More than five feet was reported around Pensacola and Panama City, with another Panama City estimate of five and a half feet. A final coastwide maximum remains unresolved.
- St. Petersburg had coastal flooding around midnight into Saturday, far from the Destin landfall. A storm chaser identified as Naveen estimated two to three feet of surge and described water covering a beach and waves overtopping a jetty.
- He separately described tides one to three feet above normal high tide. Those heights are local estimates. Panhandle damage also included a gas station in the Santa Rosa area and fallen trees in Milton. Rosemary Beach residents described flooding, debris and lost roof shingles. Rainfall accounts described localized totals around a foot or more, but a final landfall rainfall inventory isn't available.
- Pensacola International Airport remained closed to commercial traffic for inspections Saturday. Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport reopened, but severe delays continued and most departing flights were canceled. American, Delta and United offered travel waivers.
- I-10 and U.S. Route 98 were reported open Saturday morning, while local roads remained obstructed. National Guard soldiers swam to a submerged truck and pulled its occupants to safety. Debris can conceal downed electricity lines, and nearby homes losing power doesn't mean those lines are safe.
- Tropical warnings ended Friday night in Lower Plaquemines and Southern Harrison. By 10:15 p.m. Central, all tropical watches and warnings in the New Orleans weather office's area were canceled. Coastal flood advisories continued overnight in parts of that area.
- Plaquemines Parish lifted its limited voluntary evacuation for businesses around Venice's Tidewater Road on Saturday. The Empire Floodgate and River Sector Gate reopened to marine traffic. Earlier shelter instructions, bridge closures and evacuation orders concerned the coastal crossing; Sunday restrictions depend on local updates.
- Offshore operators had shut in 68.76 percent of Gulf oil production by late Saturday morning, and 57.44 percent of gas production. Workers had evacuated 113 of 371 staffed platforms and eight of 11 drilling rigs.
- The oil interruption amounted to about 1.4 million barrels each day. Friday's shutdown figures were higher, with 71.51 percent of oil and 58.84 percent of gas production shut in, and 129 platforms evacuated. Shell began sending personnel back Saturday, while damage inspections and facility restart requirements still lay ahead.
- The Energy Department authorized up to four million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The authorization allows up to two million each for ExxonMobil and BP America. They must return borrowed oil with extra barrels in 2027.
- The department says the exchange aims to keep refineries operating and limit supply disruption. Actual delivery volumes haven't been announced. Offshore production recovery, like electricity restoration on land, still depends on inspections and repairs.
- Sunday afternoon could bring a few tornadoes and damaging gusts to portions of North Carolina, Virginia and southeast Maryland. The Saturday-issued Storm Prediction Center outlook places parts of those areas in a Slight Risk for severe storms.
- Stronger thunderstorms are forecast locally from noon to six Sunday, with an elevated Level 2 risk beginning around late morning or midday. Residents need a functioning way to receive warnings, especially where electricity and communications are still disrupted.
- Parts of Georgia and the Carolinas could receive three to six inches of rain, locally up to ten. The Mid-Atlantic and Northeast forecast calls for one to three inches, with localized totals above five where storms repeatedly cross an area.
- Central North Carolina's Saturday morning forecast called for one to two inches, locally higher, focused over the Triad and southern Coastal Plain. That briefing put the overall flash-flood threat low, with isolated flooding possible. Mountain and foothill forecasts emphasized greater flash-flood concerns.
- Saturday's wind alerts reached roughly 22 million people from Louisiana to Pennsylvania. Flood watches and warnings covered about ten million from Florida to southern Virginia. Those groups overlap, and the figures describe Saturday's alerts.
- Weekend gusts could reach 60 miles an hour in some areas. The hurricane has weakened, but power restoration has no complete timetable, and Sunday's forecast adds possible tornadoes and damaging thunderstorms. The dated severe-weather outlook runs through Monday morning.
