Helen Haines loses second leg; husband says she is alive and stableCosa avevamo detto che restava aperto
Her wider prognosis, the outcome for her remaining leg, the motive and the final reconstruction of the collision remain unresolved.

Reports place the right-leg operation on Wednesday afternoon. Her husband says she is alive and stable, but her prognosis and the alleged driver’s motive remain unresolved.
Helen Haines is alive and stable, her husband says, but faces a long and difficult recovery after surgeons amputated both legs. Doctors removed her right leg on Wednesday afternoon, October 21, after efforts to save it failed, two days after the loss of her left leg. The clearer surgical timeline does not yet come with a longer-term medical outlook.6156
“The good news in all this is Helen is alive, and she’s stable,” Phil Haines told reporters. “That is the most important thing for our family.” His account puts survival first, without suggesting that the danger and difficulty of her injuries have passed.1
In our October 21 broadcast at 06:56 UTC, we reported both amputations, the charges against Brendan Nugent and his continued custody. The subsequent reporting clarifies when the second operation took place and adds a defence statement about Nugent’s health. It does not describe another operation, another court appearance or a new set of charges.
Haines, 65, represents the rural Victorian electorate of Indi as an independent. Before entering Parliament in 2019, she worked in nursing, midwifery and health research. She retained the seat in 2022 and 2025. She is now receiving care at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital after being struck outside her electorate office in Wangaratta on Monday, October 19.157
That is the most important thing for our family.
Her husband said doctors amputated her left leg on Monday and subsequently tried to save her right. Wednesday’s operation ended that effort. Reports from the New England Times and Wangaratta Chronicle place the second amputation on Wednesday afternoon; ABC News and Deutsche Welle also identify Wednesday as the day.15515654
Phil Haines also described her heart and mind as being in good shape. That is a family account of how she is doing, not a treating clinician’s assessment of her prognosis. Some current reports describe her as critical but stable, while others use stable or alive and stable. Those descriptions do not, on their own, demonstrate an improvement or deterioration between reports. Stable does not mean the injuries are no longer serious.751
What happened outside the office
Haines was struck outside her electorate office on Murphy Street in Wangaratta. She received treatment locally before being transferred to the Alfred for emergency surgery. Her husband’s account describes two impacts, but the precise vehicle movements have not been established by a police reconstruction.71
ABC News’s October 21 account describes a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV pinning Haines against her own car, then reversing and striking her again, according to witnesses. Sky News’s October 21 account describes the vehicle driving away and turning around before a second impact. Those are different descriptions of the movement between impacts, not a settled sequence. Neither should be promoted into an established police finding.53
Police allege Haines was targeted and believe the incident was isolated, according to The Independent. Deutsche Welle’s October 21 report, however, says authorities had not definitively determined whether it was deliberate. The distinction matters: an allegation of targeting is not an established motive or a court finding about intent.24
Counterterrorism investigators have joined the investigation, but their participation does not establish a political motive. Federal police commissioner Krissy Barrett said police had no specific intelligence indicating what would happen. Neither the absence of a prior warning nor the location outside an MP’s office answers why Haines was struck.41
The charges and the defence statement
Brendan Nugent, 43, appeared at Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. He entered no plea, did not apply for bail and remained in custody. That is not a contested bail application being rejected, and it is not a finding of guilt. Prosecutors still have to prove the allegations.5
The three reported attack-related charges are dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Some reporting shortens the latter two descriptions; the precise statutory wording has not been checked against an original charge sheet. The two cannabis allegations are described as cultivation and possession. They are the same pair already reported, not two further charges added in this update.712
Nugent’s lawyer reportedly told the court he had a rare neurological condition called idiopathic transverse myelitis and was recovering from a concussion. Al Jazeera attributes that account to Australian Broadcasting Corporation court reporting; local station Edge FM also names the neurological condition. These are reported defence statements, not independently verified medical findings. No medical evidence available here establishes a connection between either condition and the driving or explains the alleged attack.1147
Victoria Police commissioner Mike Bush said police had not ruled out further charges, a position already included in our earlier broadcast. No subsequent charging decision has been established in this update.115
The timetable we previously reported called for police to complete their brief of evidence by December 24, 2026, followed by a committal mention on February 4, 2027. Newer accounts referring simply to February or February 4 do not establish a change, but the dates have not been checked against an original court order or listing. A committal mention is a procedural step to manage the case before any trial, not a trial or verdict.25

Helen Haines’s second amputation: clearer timing, uncertain recovery
Come trasmesso
- Surgeons removed Helen Haines's right leg after efforts to save it failed. Her husband says she's alive and stable, and faces a long, difficult recovery.
- Earlier on October 21, we reported both amputations, the charges and the accused man's continued custody. The update now places the second operation on Wednesday afternoon. Her surgery's timing is clearer, but her longer-term recovery and the driver's motive are still unresolved.
- Haines is 65 and represents the rural electorate of Indi as an independent. Before Parliament, she worked in nursing, midwifery and health research. She first won the seat in 2019 and retained it in 2022 and 2025. The injuries now leave her family facing the recovery her husband described as long and difficult.
- Doctors amputated her left leg on October 19, the day she was struck. They then tried to save her right leg. That effort ended with its amputation on October 21, Wednesday afternoon, at Melbourne's Alfred Hospital.
- Phil Haines said, “The good news in all this is Helen is alive, and she's stable.” He added, “That is the most important thing for our family.” He also described her heart and mind as being in good shape. Those are her husband's descriptions of how she's doing.
- Her condition has also been described as critical but stable. The word stable doesn't mean her injuries have stopped being serious. There's no later hospital assessment explaining her longer-term outlook. Her family has described the challenge ahead, but a treatment and rehabilitation plan hasn't been announced.
- Haines was struck outside her electorate office on Murphy Street in Wangaratta, Victoria, on Monday, October 19. She received treatment locally before being transferred to Melbourne's Alfred Hospital for emergency surgery. Her husband's account describes two impacts.
- Witnesses describe Haines being pinned against her own car by a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV. They describe the vehicle moving before a second impact. Some describe it reversing. Others describe it driving away and turning around. Police haven't explained the precise route, so those differing descriptions still leave the vehicle's movements unresolved.
- Brendan Nugent, 43, faces dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. He also faces cannabis cultivation and possession charges. Those are the same two cannabis allegations already in the case.
- Nugent appeared at Wangaratta Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. He entered no plea and didn't apply for bail. He remains in custody. Prosecutors still have to prove the allegations against him. The court appearance also brought a statement from his lawyer about his health, adding a defence claim to the case.
- Nugent's lawyer told the court he has a rare neurological condition called idiopathic transverse myelitis. The lawyer also said he was recovering from a concussion. Those statements haven't been confirmed by doctors, and they don't explain what happened outside Haines's office.
- Police allege Haines was targeted, and they believe the incident was isolated. Investigators are still examining intent and motive. Haines's parliamentary role and the location outside her office don't, by themselves, explain why she was struck. Federal police have also addressed whether they had warning before the incident.
- Federal police commissioner Krissy Barrett said police had no specific intelligence pointing to what happened. Counterterrorism investigators have joined the investigation. Their involvement doesn't identify a motive, and police still haven't said why Haines was struck.
- Victoria Police commissioner Mike Bush said police hadn't ruled out further charges. That possibility was already part of the investigation. No further charging decision has been announced in this update. The next scheduled steps concern the evidence police must assemble and the court's management of the case.
- Police are expected to complete their brief of evidence by December 24, 2026. Nugent's next listed step is a committal mention on February 4, 2027, a procedural hearing to manage the case before any trial.
