Wetenschap · Harriet the badgerScottish Borders badger welfare: Rescuer's licence refused as charities challenge Harriet's careGeschreven 6 november 2026 om 19:36 UTCTranscript0:07Graeme Wilson nursed Harriet back to health, but three wildlife cherries oppose him0:12keeping her.0:13Nature Scott has rejected his application, and the dispute now includes whether0:17euthanasia could be more humane than unsuitable captivity.0:21Whether Harriet can have a safe, lawful future in human care is still unresolved.0:26Wilson runs GW Ecology from his home in Denholm, in the Scottish borders.0:31It's a small independent wildlife rehabilitation service.0:35He says Harriet arrived desperately ill, hungry and dehydrated, and needed urgent0:41feeding.0:42Harriet was found in a cattle trough about three hundred feet or hundred meters from0:47her set.0:48The underground home badgers use.0:51Wilson was called to help her in April2026 .0:54The exact discovery site hasn't been identified.0:57He believes someone had already hand-reared her, leaving her too familiar with1:01people to survive in the wild.1:03Wilson says Harriet needed critical care formula and food quickly.1:07Over the following weeks, she gained weight.1:10He says he deliberately restricted contact with her following rehabilitation1:14recommendations and disputes the suggestion that he made her dependent on people.1:19Wilson says he tried taking Harriet back to her set.1:22She attempted to climb a tree and was, in his words, freaking out, so he took her1:28home again.1:29That experience underpins his fear that release would end badly.1:33His belief that she was hand-reared before the rescue is central to his defense.1:38The British Wildlife Rehabilitation Council says it suspended Wilson's membership1:43because he hadn't upheld its principles.1:45Nature Scott separately rejected his application to keep Harriet.1:49The council's decision concerns professional membership.1:52Nature Scott's concerns permission to keep the animal.1:55Wilson already holds a license to keep bats that can't be released.1:59For Harriet, he says he sought an educational license to demonstrate why people2:04shouldn't hand rear badgers.2:06Badgers and their sets.2:07Are protected under the Protection of Badgers Act nineteen ninety-two, as amended.2:13Licensing can authorize activities that would otherwise be unlawful.2:17The charities say Harriet should have joined other young badgers in a rehabilitation2:22program, even if she was already used to people.2:25Their argument directly challenges Wilson's belief that her earlier contact with2:30humans made permanent captivity unavoidable.2:33The council, Scottish Badgers, and the Badger Trust acknowledge Wilson's good2:38intentions, but they say he should have sought specialist help from a reputable,2:42licensed rescue center with suitable facilities.2:46They call Harriet's dependence on humans a deeply sad outcome, and blame improper2:51rehabilitation practice.2:53Wilson disputes that account of how she came to depend on people.2:57Wilson argues that humane captivity could protect a badger he believes can't survive3:02release.3:03The charities say specialist rehabilitation with other cubs.3:07Should have prepared her for freedom.3:08They also say her current living arrangement can't meet a badger's needs.3:13The charities describe Harriet's remaining options as extremely limited, including3:17euthanasia or placement in a zoo or sanctuary, but they also reject the suggestion3:23that a zoo or sanctuary automatically offers an appropriate solution.3:27They say that overlooks badger's behavioral, social, and welfare needs.3:31Their criticism extends beyond the address where Harriet would live.3:35Wilson accepts euthanasia when humane captivity is impossible.3:39He says an animal that can't be released should remain in captivity if its needs can3:44be met.3:45The dispute is over whether that can be achieved for Harriet, and how she reached3:50this point.3:50The charities generally oppose permanent captivity for native British wild animals,3:56allowing for exceptional circumstances.3:58They accept humane euthanasia rather than conditions that can't meet an animal's4:03needs.4:03Their discussion of euthanasia is a welfare position.4:07No Nature Scott order to euthanize Harriet has been announced.4:11Both sides put welfare first, but reach different conclusions about acceptable care.4:16A badger cub alone may still have its mother nearby.4:20For an injured or unwell badger, contact experienced rescuers, a local badger4:26group, the RSPCA or Scottish SPCA.4:29Keep people and dogs away.4:31Note the location, and don't feed, handle, move, or take it home.4:36Harriet's future hasn't been settled.4:38It isn't clear whether NatureScott requires release alone or would allow transfer to4:43a zoo.4:44Wilson's assessment of her release prospects hasn't been resolved by an independent4:49veterinary assessment.4:50The license refusal and membership suspension leave the central welfare decision4:55open.4:56Harriet can live safely, and who will assess her needs.Lees het artikelTijdlijn van het
