China’s Ethnic Unity Law took effect on July 1, making Mandarin primary over other languages and restricting cultural expressions deemed to promote separatism. A Tibetan resident told FRANCE 24 she speaks Tibetan at home; the report does not say whether the law has been amended, repealed or replaced, or when its operative period ends.
