A November 2 report adds a minimum gun count and the arrested teen’s age. It still does not establish who fired the shots that wounded at least seven people near Indiana University.

When HeyDay News reported on the Bloomington shooting on November 1, 2026, seven people had been taken to hospitals, police had a person in custody and a gun had been found nearby. The next day’s reporting made the weapons investigation more specific: Bloomington police said evidence indicated that at least two guns were used. But the central question has not been resolved—who fired them? 1 5 6

WSBT’s November 2 morning report identified the arrested person as an 18-year-old, described his arrest with a gun and said officers found another gun nearby. Those are additional details about the already-reported incident, not evidence of a new arrest on November 4. Neither the recovered weapons nor the arrest establishes that the teen shot anyone. WSBT said it remained unclear whether he would face a charge for firing a gun. 1

Two guns do not identify shooters

The important development is not simply that police recovered more than one firearm. It is their assessment, reported by WSBT, that evidence indicates at least two guns were used in the shooting. That separates the weapons finding from the earlier account of a gun recovered near someone taken into custody. It does not, by itself, establish how many people fired. 1

Investigators also recovered spent shell casings. People.com’s November 1 account, drawing on local reporting, described casings of various calibers on the sidewalk near the scene. Different calibers are different ammunition sizes; that evidence belongs alongside the police assessment about multiple guns, but it does not identify the people who used them. 5

There are several distinct questions here: which weapons were fired, who possessed them and who pulled the triggers. The available accounts do not establish that either recovered gun has been matched to the gunfire that wounded the victims. An armed person’s proximity to a shooting gives police something to investigate. It is not a substitute for evidence of responsibility.

That uncertainty has persisted across the reporting. Fox News’s November 1 account said police had not established whether the detained man fired. CBS Chicago’s November 2 accounts likewise reported one person in custody without confirmation that the person fired the shots. The later description of a minimum gun count does not close that gap. 6 2 3

What happened on Kirkwood Avenue

The gunfire broke out at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, just off Indiana University’s campus in downtown Bloomington. Bloomington and university police were monitoring a large crowd around Kirkwood Avenue and Dunn Street when a disturbance preceded multiple shots. Fuller reporting placed the gunfire in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue. Indiana State Police assisted at the scene. 5 6 21

Officers pursued a male seen running northeast from the area and took him into custody near Dunn Meadow. The pursuit, detention and hospital transports were part of the earlier account of the shooting; they should not be mistaken for developments that occurred after the November 2 reporting. Seven injured people were taken to local hospitals, and no deaths had been reported at that stage. 5 6

The fuller police narrative distinguishes where officers were monitoring the crowd from the block where they heard gunfire. It does not establish a precise firing position. Nor do the available accounts explain what prompted the disturbance or why the shooting began. 21

The reported time also has an unresolved wrinkle. November 1 was the daylight-saving clock-change morning, when 1:30 a.m. occurred twice. The accounts do not specify which occurrence applied, so a definitive UTC conversion or an exact elapsed-time calculation from the shooting to later alerts would claim more precision than the reporting supports.

A dated update on the victims

The November 2 WSBT report said the victims were between 17 and 27 years old and were all last reported in stable condition. That adds meaningful information to the initial accounts, which left the extent of their injuries unknown. It is a dated condition report—not a verified November 4 medical assessment, and not evidence that the injuries were minor or that everyone had recovered. 1 3

The later accounts also describe seven people as shot or wounded, adding specificity to our original report of seven hospital transports. WSBT retained the formulation “at least seven,” while CBS Chicago reported seven. Nothing in those accounts establishes an increase in the victim count or a final accounting of every possible injury. 1 3

WSBT said none of the victims were believed to be Indiana University students. The qualification matters: it is not categorical enrollment confirmation, and it says nothing about the arrested person’s student status. The university connection established here is geographic—the shooting occurred just off campus. 1

University police’s final overnight safety update on November 1 said the threat was no longer imminent while continuing to advise people to avoid the investigation area. That superseded the initial emergency warning; it was not a declaration that the investigation was complete. Police sought public video and information to help reconstruct what happened. 5

The weapons evidence makes that reconstruction more specific. It still leaves the consequential gap between finding an armed person after gunfire and proving who shot the victims. No verified firing-related charge or established firing role for the arrested teen emerges from these accounts. Until that evidence is made public, an arrest and an answer remain different things. 1 3

  1. At least two guns fired during the shooting that wounded at least seven people. Police arrested an armed 18-year-old near Indiana University. On November 1, we reported a person in custody and a gun found nearby. Who fired those weapons, and what connects the person under arrest to the shooting?
  2. Police say they have evidence that at least two guns were used. That finding adds to what investigators knew about the weapons. It leaves them with the job of identifying who used them.
  3. The gunfire struck just off Indiana University's campus in downtown Bloomington. Police placed the shooting in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue. Officers monitoring a large crowd around Kirkwood and Dunn Street heard multiple shots after a disturbance.
  4. The shooting happened around 1:30 in the morning on November 1. Bloomington and university police were already monitoring the crowd, and Indiana State Police assisted at the scene. Seven injured people went to local hospitals. No deaths had been reported at that stage.
  5. The November 2 details identify the arrested person as an 18-year-old and describe an arrest with a gun. Officers also found another gun nearby. The arrest itself was already part of the earlier account.
  6. Officers pursued a male they saw running northeast from the area where they heard shots. They took him into custody near Dunn Meadow. Finding someone armed gave investigators a person to question and a weapon to examine.
  7. Police also recovered spent shell casings. Some were of different calibers, meaning they were different ammunition sizes. Those finds sit alongside the police assessment that multiple guns were used. A minimum of two guns doesn't tell investigators how many people fired them.
  8. At least seven people were shot, and they ranged in age from 17 to 27. All were last reported in stable condition in the November 2 update. None were believed to be Indiana University students.
  9. The stable-condition update adds information about the patients after their injuries were initially described as unknown. Their subsequent medical outcomes haven't been announced here. The university connection is geographic, while the statement about the victims' enrollment remains qualified.
  10. Mayor Kerry Thomson said more than 20 officers were on Kirkwood Avenue and credited them with preventing further violence. She also called for changes to Indiana gun laws and event-permitting rules. Those were her proposals following the shooting.
  11. University police later said the threat was no longer imminent, while advising people to avoid the investigation area. That was the final overnight safety update from November 1. Investigators sought public video and information to help reconstruct what happened.
  12. The later findings make the weapons investigation more specific. Police have a minimum gun count, recovered firearms and shell casings to examine. They also have an arrested person whose responsibility for the gunfire remains unresolved.
  13. Police haven't said who fired or whether the arrested man fired a shot. It also isn't clear whether he'll face a charge for firing a gun.
