Doctors cleared the pope to recover at the Vatican after lung surgery. Cancer staging, further treatment and approval for his full November itinerary remain unresolved.
Pope Leo XIV is well enough to leave hospital. That is not the same as knowing how far his cancer extends—or whether he can manage everything waiting on his calendar.
The 71-year-old returned to the Vatican on Saturday, October 17, four elapsed days after surgeons removed the whole lower lobe of his right lung. Doctors judged him fit for discharge after reviewing fresh blood tests, a chest X-ray and his clinical condition. The final cancer stage, possible spread and need for further treatment remain publicly unresolved.22671
Leo left Rome’s Gemelli Hospital shortly after 3:30 p.m. local time, according to EWTN’s departure report. He said he felt much better. His return home is a concrete advance after an operation the Vatican described as successful and without complications, but it moves his recovery outside hospital rather than declaring it complete.2322398
In our October 15 broadcast, we reported the completed surgery, the confirmation of lung adenocarcinoma and his first steps in rehabilitation. The change now is his actual discharge. That settles the hospital-exit question and supersedes the earlier expectation that he might remain until October 20: he left three calendar days before that forecast. It does not settle the separate questions about cancer treatment or November travel.131
In light of the blood tests and chest X-ray carried out this morning, and following an evaluation of his clinical condition, the Holy Father has been deemed fit for discharge.
The wording of that October 17 statement matters. Carbone, Leo’s personal physician, and Margaritora, the surgeon who led the operating team, cleared him to leave hospital. They did not in that statement authorize unrestricted work, every public engagement or the complete international journey.226
The discharge accounts use different counts: BBC News describes four days after surgery, while NPR and the Associated Press describe five days or the fifth hospital day. The secure dates are October 13 for surgery and October 17 for discharge—four elapsed days spanning five calendar dates. Those descriptions do not establish different departure dates.174
Recovery is not a cancer verdict
Before discharge, Leo was walking in his room, eating a regular diet and continuing respiratory physiotherapy. Doctors said he could carry out ordinary daily activities independently. Earlier postoperative blood tests and a chest X-ray had been described as normal; later checks showed steady improvement and good recovery of the operated lung. These are encouraging findings about his postoperative course. They are not findings that establish the cancer’s extent.1368
The first images released after surgery, on October 16, showed him celebrating Mass at Gemelli. Doctors, nurses and Vatican gendarmes were present in a room on the tenth floor. He also visited children receiving cancer care, who gave him drawings and letters; one child expressed the hope that they would both recover. The encounters showed a pope active and in contact with others during rehabilitation, without answering the clinical questions still pending.82426
The operation itself used a video-assisted technique. The Holy See’s October 13 bulletin said tissue examined during surgery confirmed lung adenocarcinoma, as suspected by preoperative tests. It specified removal of the right lower lobe—not an equal numerical third of the lung. The roughly 90-minute operation and approximately three hours in the operating theatre describe different intervals, not evidence of a complication.2007
The surgical bulletin described the aim as ensuring a “radical procedure.” That expresses an effort to remove the cancer thoroughly; it does not, by itself, establish clear microscopic margins, uninvolved lymph nodes or the absence of cancer elsewhere. Nor do pending tissue results undo the diagnosis already confirmed during surgery. Confirmation of the cancer type and completion of its fuller assessment are different steps.2004
Dr Vin Gupta, an outside pulmonologist interviewed by NPR, interpreted surgery as the first treatment as a possible sign that Leo’s team considered the disease early stage. That remains an outside interpretation, not a stage assigned by the treating doctors. No further treatment has been announced, which means the decision is not public—not that additional treatment has been ruled out.7
There is no fixed recovery deadline, either. Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni had estimated about one week for postoperative recovery; Margaritora later estimated about another ten days to recover fully. The estimates came in different contexts and neither promises a date for unrestricted duties. An outside physician’s suggestion that staging could take weeks is likewise not a deadline from Leo’s medical team.72359
The calendar is not medical clearance
Leo’s public engagements and appointments had been canceled through at least October 20. That date is the end of a stated cancellation window, not a promise that his full workload resumes then. He continued work during hospitalization; a reduced public schedule is not evidence that he stopped governing or transferred papal authority.7244
A limited return to public view was announced for the Sunday Angelus at noon Rome time on October 18. Reports differed over its expected setting: WRAL’s October 17 account named a hospital window; the Associated Press’s later account that day named the Apostolic Palace window. His documented return to the Vatican supports the later palace plan and overtakes the hospital forecast. Neither account confirms that the appearance happened.64227
The larger test is the November 6–17 journey to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. The published itinerary remains on the calendar, with ABC News reporting ten cities. Departure would come 24 days after surgery. Leo is reported to be keen not to postpone it, but a scheduled journey and a desire to travel are not medical approval.234111
Peru’s president had warned that recovery could take several weeks longer than expected and might affect the visit, according to NBC News’s October 14 reporting. That was her understanding, not an announced prognosis from Leo’s treating team; Holy See endorsement was not established. Margaritora subsequently offered a more favorable clinical outlook, describing the operation as routine.1718235
Leaving hospital closes one important chapter of this illness. The next decisions require different evidence: the completed cancer assessment, any treatment recommendation and individual advice about exertion and travel. The calendar shows what Leo hopes to do. His discharge establishes where he can recover—not yet how much he can undertake.

Pope Leo leaves hospital, but the cancer questions remain
Wersja z emisji
- On October 15 we reported Pope Leo’s surgery and rehabilitation. He’s now returned from hospital. Doctors discharged the 71-year-old on October 17, four days after surgeons removed a cancerous lung lobe.
- His doctors describe steady improvement, while the full cancer assessment is still unfinished. How far does that recovery take him toward public duties and his planned South America journey?
- Leo left Gemelli shortly after three thirty Saturday afternoon and returned to the Vatican. He said he felt much better. His departure came three calendar days before an earlier forecast that he might stay until October 20.
- The operation took place October 13. Discharge followed October 17. That’s four elapsed days across five calendar dates, which explains descriptions of a four-day recovery interval or departure on his fifth hospital day.
- Doctors reviewed fresh blood tests, a chest X-ray and Leo’s overall condition before allowing him home. His personal physician, Luigi Carbone, and lead surgeon, Stefano Margaritora, signed the assessment. Their decision allows his recovery to continue outside hospital.
- Earlier blood tests and a chest X-ray had been described as normal after surgery. Later checks showed steady improvement, and imaging showed good recovery of the operated lung. Those encouraging findings describe his recovery from the operation. The fuller cancer assessment will guide what comes next.
- Surgeons removed the whole lower lobe of Leo’s right lung using a video-assisted technique. Tissue examined during the operation confirmed adenocarcinoma, a form of lung cancer. Tests before surgery had already raised suspicion.
- The lower lobe is the precise anatomical description of what surgeons removed. The Vatican described the operation as successful, completed as planned and without complications. Leo woke normally afterward and returned to his room.
- The operation lasted about ninety minutes. Leo spent about three hours in the operating theatre altogether. Those figures measure different intervals, so both can describe the same uncomplicated operation.
- Doctors found the growth during routine checks, with no symptoms reported. Leo had described it as small and well contained. Outside pulmonologist Vin Gupta suggested that choosing surgery first might mean the treating team thought the cancer was at an early stage. That remains his interpretation.
- Leo’s doctors haven’t announced a final cancer stage or whether it has spread. They also haven’t announced whether he’ll need further treatment. The confirmed diagnosis can stand while more detailed examination of the removed tissue continues.
- The surgical aim of a radical procedure describes an effort to remove the cancer thoroughly. Only the fuller assessment can show microscopic margins and lymph-node involvement. Estimates for completing that assessment have ranged from several days to a few weeks, without a deadline from Leo’s treating team.
- Leo was walking in his room, eating a regular diet and doing respiratory physiotherapy before discharge. Doctors said he could manage ordinary daily activities independently. He slept well and was described as being in good spirits.
- On October 16, the first pictures released after surgery showed him celebrating Mass in a room on Gemelli’s tenth floor. Doctors, nurses and Vatican gendarmes were present. He also visited children receiving cancer care. They gave him drawings and letters, including one child’s hope that they would both recover.
- Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni had estimated about one week for postoperative recovery. Margaritora later estimated about another ten days to recover fully. The estimates came in different contexts, and neither supplies a fixed date for unrestricted work.
- Leo continued working during his hospital stay. His public engagements and appointments had been canceled through at least October 20, but that date carries no promise that his full workload will resume then.
- The announced Sunday Angelus offered a possible limited return to public view. Forecasts differed over its setting, naming a hospital window or the Apostolic Palace window. Leo’s return to the Vatican supports the palace plan.
- The plan placed Leo at the Apostolic Palace window, addressing people in St Peter’s Square at noon Sunday, October 18. That scheduled time has passed, but whether the appearance went ahead is still unclear.
- The longer test of his recovery is the November journey. Leo is keen to avoid postponing it, and the itinerary remains on the calendar.
- The planned November 6 to 17 trip covers Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, with ten cities on the itinerary. Departure would come twenty-four days after surgery. The dates span twelve calendar dates, or eleven days between departure and return.
- Peru’s president earlier warned that recovery might take several weeks longer than expected and could alter the visit. She was describing her understanding of Leo’s condition. His surgeon subsequently offered a more favorable clinical outlook.
- Margaritora described the operation as routine. On the planned journey, he said, “I would say there are no clinical reasons why this visit should not take place.” Final medical approval for the full itinerary still hasn’t been announced.
- Leo has left hospital after an uncomplicated operation and an improving recovery. His doctors still have to complete the cancer assessment, decide whether he needs more treatment, and determine how much public activity and international travel he can undertake.
