Three killed in SH 71 crash, including two TxDOT project contractors
Dostępne po angielsku
Three people died in the crash on State Highway 71: two contractors working on a Texas Department of Transportation project and a 26-year-old woman driving a Nissan sedan. For the contractors, a highway workplace became the scene of a fatal collision. For all three, authorities have yet to publicly explain the sequence that led to their deaths.1
The crash happened early Thursday, October 29, 2026, in the westbound lanes at Tucker Hill Lane, near the Travis–Bastrop county line. All westbound lanes closed for about two hours. Traffic has resumed, but the victims’ names have not been released and the cause remains under investigation.1
The Bastrop County sheriff confirmed the three deaths, according to KABB’s updated report, which says the sheriff provided that information to CBS Austin. TxDOT initially confirmed the deaths of the two contractors without providing information about other fatalities. The sheriff’s subsequent confirmation established that the woman also died; the contractors are included in the total of three, not additional to it.1
That distinction matters because the first reports were necessarily incomplete. KEYE’s initial closure report did not establish whether anyone was hurt. Its later account confirmed the two contractors’ deaths while leaving the overall toll unresolved. Those earlier gaps have been superseded by the three-death confirmation, not by conflicting findings about whether the crash was fatal.21
What the morning alerts establish
October 29 traffic updates
- 5:27 a.m. CDT18
Forth reproduced an alert attributed to TxDOT describing the right westbound lane at Tucker Hill as closed because of a major collision.
- 5:37 a.m. CDT17
TxDOT announced that all westbound lanes were closed, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
- 6:06 a.m. CDT3
KVUE reported the closure at Tucker Hill Lane, citing TxDOT.
- By 7:03 a.m. CDT17
TxDOT said all lanes had reopened, according to the Austin American-Statesman.
The earliest alert is a third-party reproduction, not a TxDOT-hosted record. Its reference to the right lane does not establish the complete lane configuration at that point, and the available accounts do not explain the transition to a full westbound closure. It would be a mistake to use that alert to reconstruct the road layout before impact.1817
A workplace, with crucial details missing
The two contractors’ connection to a TxDOT project is confirmed. Their employer, the particular project and their individual assignments are not established in the available reporting. They should not be described as direct employees of the transportation department merely because they were working on one of its projects.117
Nor does the available evidence document where the contractors were positioned when the collision happened or what barriers, cones, buffer space or protective vehicles were in place. TxDOT’s broader SH 71 East Corridor project page describes improvements along the highway, but it does not connect those workers to that project. Sharing a highway name is not enough to establish their assignment.1719
TxDOT said it was “deeply saddened by the loss of lives” and expressed sympathy for the contractors’ families and coworkers. The agency also urged drivers to heed construction-zone signs, adjust speed to conditions, avoid distractions and never drive impaired.1
Those are general safety instructions, not investigative findings. Nothing in the confirmed account establishes that speeding, distraction or impairment caused this collision. There is no established basis to assign fault to the woman, the contractors or another person.1
The identification of a Nissan sedan also does not establish how many vehicles were involved. Authorities have not supplied a confirmed collision sequence or explained the circumstances leading up to impact. The account rests on local reporting of the sheriff’s confirmation and TxDOT’s statements and updates; an underlying sheriff or Texas Department of Public Safety investigative report was not available for independent review.12
The next substantive development would be the release of the victims’ identities or an investigative account explaining the vehicles’ movements and the worksite circumstances. Reopening the highway resolved the immediate traffic disruption. It did not answer how three people came to die there.
