Two went in to rescue coworkers. All four died in a Ujjain hotel chamber
Dostępne po angielsku
Two workers went into a hotel’s food-waste chamber to save two men who had collapsed. Neither rescuer came back alive. That sequence explains how the death toll at Shri Ganga Hotel in Ujjain reached four—but it does not yet explain what made the men collapse, or why a rescue attempt exposed two more workers to fatal danger.1
The deaths have put the arrangements for entering and cleaning the chamber under investigation. Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma told The Hindu that all four men entered without the required protective gear. Three had been hired from outside for cleaning; the fourth was a hotel employee. Police and the Ujjain Municipal Corporation are investigating, with post-mortem findings still pending in the published account.1
The incident happened late on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at the hotel on the Ujjain–Dewas Road in Madhya Pradesh. Reports place it at approximately 10:30–11 p.m. Indian Standard Time. November 1 was the publication date of the accounts that followed, not the night the workers first entered the chamber.127
Collector Roshan Kumar Singh described two successive entries: first, two workers entered the chamber, which held residual and leftover food, and collapsed; then two others went inside to rescue them. All four died. The two men making that rescue attempt are part of the four deaths, not additional fatalities. The published account does not establish which men entered first or the precise instructions given to each.1
Four lives, and an unresolved name
The dead were identified as Wahid Khan, 29; Kamlesh Tamboli, 30; Manoj Meena, 25; and a 28-year-old man named Nitin. The Hindu described Khan, Tamboli and Nitin as local residents, and Meena as the hotel’s supervisor, from Jhalawar in Rajasthan. The deaths therefore span both people brought in for cleaning and the hotel’s own workforce.1
Police personnel and hotel staff eventually broke open the chamber to recover the men. An iron grill complicated that effort, Sharma said. Hindustan Times separately quoted Madhav Nagar police station chief Gajendra Pachoriya as saying a machine was used to cut open the chamber’s metal door. Recovery required opening it from outside after the fatal entries.12
There was an iron grill on the chamber so some people suffered injuries during the rescue efforts. Police also tried to revive them through CPR but we could not succeed.
The injury count is less clear than the death toll. Sharma described minor injuries during the recovery, including injuries to police officers, without giving a total. The Times of India reported that two other would-be rescuers fell ill and received hospital treatment. It is not established whether those accounts overlap, so they cannot reliably be added together.112
The investigation must go beyond entry
Sharma identified slippery sludge and a possible gas leak as suspected factors. Those are investigative leads, not a completed medical explanation. No particular gas has been established, and the published account contains no final post-mortem finding identifying toxic exposure, oxygen deprivation or another mechanism as the cause of death. Calling these confirmed toxic-gas deaths would get ahead of the findings.1
The equipment question is separate from the medical one. Sharma’s statement that the men lacked required protective gear is a significant reported circumstance, but it does not establish who was responsible for providing that gear, who authorised entry or what precautions were arranged. Hotel management and staff are being questioned; no finding of employer culpability has been established.1
The municipal inquiry adds another question about the cleaning arrangements. A municipal health department official told The Hindu that the hotel had not obtained a mandatory civic-body receipt for the cleaning. That reported omission warrants scrutiny alongside the entry decisions and protective equipment. It does not, by itself, prove either the cause of death or criminal responsibility.1
Police have said a First Information Report, or FIR, would be registered based on the post-mortem findings. That is a prospective step, not confirmation that a criminal case has already been registered. Forensic evidence collection has also been reported, but no completed laboratory result or final inquiry conclusion has been established.117
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced ₹4 lakh in state assistance for each bereaved family. His statement, reported by The Hindu, said he had directed the government to provide the money. It is an announced commitment; payment to the families has not been confirmed.1
Larger compensation figures remain unreconciled. Navbharat Live reported ₹30 lakh per family, while The Narad Muni reported ₹34 lakh. The available accounts do not establish a verified additional commitment or explain how those sums relate to the documented ₹4 lakh state announcement. They should not be added together or treated as money already received.19181
No date has been announced for the medical or investigative findings. For now, the sequence of four deaths is clearer than their cause. The next consequential findings must explain both the first collapse and the fatal rescue attempt—and determine whether the cleaning arrangements, equipment or municipal compliance involved any actionable breach.1

- Four feared dead after toxic gas leak at Ujjain hotel; rescue efforts underway
Wersja z emisji
- Two workers died trying to rescue two others inside a hotel’s food-waste chamber.
- Four men lost their lives at Shri Ganga Hotel in Ujjain. Police are investigating their entry, protective equipment and the arrangements for cleaning the chamber. What caused the first collapse, and why did the rescue attempt also turn fatal?
- The four men died inside a chamber holding leftover food and residual waste. Two had entered first and collapsed. The other two followed to try to save them, bringing the death toll to four.
- The hotel stands on the Ujjain–Dewas Road in Madhya Pradesh. The workers entered the chamber late Saturday night, October thirty-first, twenty twenty-six, at roughly half past ten to eleven.
- The deaths happened before midnight on Saturday. November first was the publication date of the detailed account that followed.
- District Collector Roshan Kumar Singh described the two-stage entry. His account explains how an attempt to reach the first two workers exposed two more men to the same chamber.
- Two workers went inside and collapsed. Two others then entered to rescue them, and both died too. Police personnel and hotel staff eventually broke open the chamber to recover the men.
- Three of the men had been hired from outside for cleaning, police superintendent Pradeep Sharma said. The fourth worked at the hotel.
- Wahid Khan was twenty-nine. Kamlesh Tamboli was thirty. Both were local residents, as was the twenty-eight-year-old worker identified by the first name Nitin.
- Manoj Meena was twenty-five and worked as the hotel’s supervisor. He came from Jhalawar in Rajasthan. His death left the hotel’s own workforce among the families bereaved by the chamber incident.
- Nitin’s surname remains unclear. He’s been named as both Nitin Binarwan and Nitin Wahid, and that discrepancy hasn’t been resolved.
- Sharma said all four entered without the required protective gear. Investigators are examining the entry arrangements and questioning hotel management and staff about what happened.
- Police suspect slippery sludge and a possible gas leak contributed to the incident. A specific gas hasn’t been identified, and the medical cause of death is still awaiting post-mortem findings.
- An iron grill complicated the recovery, Sharma said. Some people suffered injuries during the rescue, including police officers. Police then tried CPR, but they couldn’t revive any of the four workers.
- A machine was also used to cut open the chamber’s metal door, police station chief Gajendra Pachoriya said. The recovery required opening the chamber from outside after the fatal entries.
- Sharma described the rescue injuries as minor, without giving a total. Two other would-be rescuers were also said to have fallen ill and received hospital treatment. It’s unclear whether those descriptions overlap, so the total number injured remains uncertain.
- Ujjain Police and the municipal corporation are investigating. Sharma said police would register a criminal case based on the post-mortem findings. Hotel management and staff are being questioned as those inquiries continue.
- A municipal health department official said the hotel hadn’t obtained a mandatory civic-body receipt for the cleaning. Investigators must examine that requirement alongside the protective equipment and the decisions that sent workers inside.
- Forensic personnel have collected evidence. Investigators are still working toward findings on what happened inside the chamber and who, if anyone, bears legal responsibility.
- Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced four lakh rupees in state assistance for each bereaved family. He expressed condolences and directed the government to provide the money. Payment to the families hasn’t been confirmed.
- The rescue sequence explains how four men died, but investigators still have to determine what made them collapse. The medical and investigative findings will also guide any action over the equipment, entry arrangements and municipal cleaning requirements. No date has been announced for those findings.
