Cat Guardians reports no cat deaths, and temporary accommodation is arranged. But differing rescue counts, individual medical outcomes and a safe return to operations remain unresolved.
Forty-two cats have temporary housing arranged after a fire left Cat Guardians’ Lombard shelter uninhabitable. That means places for the displaced animals to go—but not yet a home for the volunteer rescue operation that has cared for stray and homeless cats for more than 35 years.94
Shaw Local reported November 3 that temporary housing had been secured, identifying Feral Fixers as a housing partner. Cat Guardians also said no cats died in the blaze, according to Glenbard Wire’s November 3 report. Those are encouraging developments, though neither establishes that every cat has finished treatment or that every planned transfer has been completed.912
On November 2, we reported that firefighters had rescued at least 30 cats and that the final number accounted for remained unresolved. The recovery updates move the story beyond that initial emergency: the shelter has since provided a more specific accounting, and temporary accommodation has been arranged. What remains unresolved is how the differing animal counts fit together, how individual cats are recovering and where the shelter can safely resume its work.349
What the different numbers mean
The early figure—at least 30 cats rescued—was a minimum, not a completed tally. Cat Guardians’ November 2 recovery statement said volunteers received all 42 cats from fire personnel. That is the shelter’s accounting of the animals handed over, rather than an independently reconciled final rescue count.34
Other follow-up reporting gives a different number: CBS Chicago and the Daily Herald reported 36 cats rescued. The accounts do not explain whether that figure and the shelter’s 42 cover precisely the same group. The discrepancy should remain visible, but it cannot responsibly be turned into a claim that six cats are missing.14174
Glenbard Wire also reported that some cats escaped during the rescue. Their later accounting has not been separately explained in the updates. The shelter’s statement that volunteers received all 42 is important, but it does not supply the cat-by-cat detail needed to reconcile every account.124
A November 5 article from The Cool Down repeats the initial minimum of at least 30 and the village’s early statement that most cats were believed accounted for, with the total unconfirmed. It describes the same November 1 fire—not another rescue on November 5. Its animal-accounting language belongs to the initial response and has been overtaken by the shelter’s more specific statement.14
One night’s emergency, a longer recovery
The fire struck Sunday night, November 1, 2026, on East St. Charles Road near North Westmore Avenue in Lombard, Illinois. The village’s official account places dispatch at approximately 8:22 p.m. to the 900 block of East St. Charles Road, with the first crew arriving at 8:27 p.m. The fire was under control by about 10 p.m.1323
Lombard police helped manage traffic, and the village asked people to avoid the area so emergency crews could work. That request concerned the emergency scene that night; it is not evidence of a continuing road restriction on November 5.1
By November 2, Cat Guardians described its building as uninhabitable. The all-volunteer nonprofit’s work extends beyond housing the cats inside it: the organization helps arrange adoptions, supports foster care and provides ongoing care or permanent placement when needed. Losing the building therefore interrupts a rescue operation, not simply the use of one address.41
Finding places for the cats is not the same as restoring the shelter.
The shelter’s November 2 statement identified Lombard Veterinary Hospital and DuPage County Animal Services as caring for the cats. The subsequent housing arrangements address another immediate need, but the updates do not establish how many cats were at each care or housing location, whether every transfer was finished, or whether final foster or adoption placements had been made.49
Nor does the report of no deaths mean that no cats were injured. Individual injuries, diagnoses, treatment outcomes and veterinary discharges have not been detailed in the recovery updates. The distinction matters: surviving the fire and completing recovery are different milestones.124
The building’s longer-term prospects remain unsettled. Cat Guardians described the cause as undetermined in its November 2 statement; no later official cause finding has been established. There is no confirmed dollar damage estimate or reopening date. Human injury information also remains unconfirmed, which cannot be rewritten as a claim that nobody was hurt.413
For now, the clearest progress is practical: temporary housing has been secured for 42 cats. The next test is whether that emergency accommodation can support their continuing care while Cat Guardians works toward a safe operating base. A housing arrangement is a substantial step out of the crisis; a functioning shelter is the recovery still to come.94
