Mid-Atlantic and North Carolina nor’easter flooding

First aired Latest aired

DevelopingNext check Oct 22: Check whether the flood warnings expire or are extended, whether NC-12 reopens, whether visitor restrictions change and whether route-specific ferry and emergency medical transport status is confirmed.

Where it stands

A prolonged nor’easter is forecast to bring repeated coastal flooding to Hatteras and Ocracoke Monday through Wednesday, October 19–21, with 2 to 4 feet of water over normally dry ground and the strongest impacts around Monday and Tuesday high tides. Ferry service is already suspended; roads may become impassable, and island access could remain disrupted for several days. The forecast flooding and its impacts have not yet subsided.

The story so far

  1. Update 23 days later

N.C. 12 closure turns Hatteras isolation threat into a travel barrier

The bridge-to-Rodanthe highway segment remained closed Wednesday morning. Longer flood warnings leave reopening, ferry service and dependable mainland medical transport unresolved.

    What moved

    • NCDOT announces the closure between the Marc Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe, according to the Outer Banks Voice.
    • Dare County’s Bulletin #5 confirms the physical closure and separately keeps the Hatteras visitor evacuation in force.
    • The National Weather Service reports that the highway segment remains closed.
  2. Update 1

Outer Banks flood threat puts mainland medical access at risk

A prolonged nor’easter could repeatedly close N.C. 12 while ferries remain disrupted. For people staying on the islands, the gravest risk is losing transport to mainland medical care.

    Still open after this report

    • Whether Monday and Tuesday high tides will close N.C. 12, when each ferry route can resume, and whether mainland medical transport will remain available throughout the storm.
