The Guardamar Urania brought 132 people to Arrecife alive, along with the bodies of two passengers who had not survived the crossing. Those rescued described five more deaths: passengers who, they said, had died during the journey before their bodies were put into the sea. Those accounts bring the voyage’s reported toll to at least seven. 56
The rescue near Lanzarote early on Monday, November 2, 2026, ended the survivors’ time at sea. It did not settle what had happened aboard their boat—or establish how well the rescued passengers were. No reliable injury count, hospital-transfer total or account of their condition has been established in the available reporting.
Two bodies were recovered; the other five deaths remain known through survivors’ testimony. That distinction is essential, both to understanding the toll and to identifying what still needs confirmation. The five are not an additional group of living passengers reported missing, nor are they deaths to be added on top of the seven. 256
Ukweli muhimu
Rescuers reached the boat about 150 kilometres, or 94 miles, from Arrecife, with supporting regional reporting placing it northeast of the city. The Guardamar Urania then brought the survivors and recovered bodies to port. The distance descriptions refer to the same operation, not separate rescue sites. 1258
The supported chronology is an early-Monday rescue followed by disembarkation in Arrecife. An exact rescue minute and time zone are not settled by the available accounts. More importantly, the rescue date does not establish when the passengers died: the deaths could have occurred earlier during the crossing.
Al Jazeera reported a voyage total of 139 people. That is consistent with 132 survivors, two recovered bodies and the five further deaths described by passengers. It is not a count of 139 people rescued, or proof that all 139 remained physically aboard when help arrived. 256
What happened during the crossing
Al Jazeera described a storm during the journey. But the available evidence does not establish a storm as the cause of the deaths. Neither a medical cause nor the precise circumstances in which the five bodies went into the sea has been confirmed. The rescue service’s account is narrower: according to rescued passengers, five bodies had been put overboard during the voyage. 256
The passengers’ identities, nationalities, departure point and length of time at sea have not been verified for this boat. The wider route runs from West Africa toward Spain’s Canary Islands, but that regional geography cannot supply the missing details of this particular crossing. 1
Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo Batlle responded by connecting the deaths to the renewed pressure on the Atlantic route.
The Atlantic route is once again claiming lives, this time off the coast of Lanzarote. Behind each one is a life, a story, and a family.
Clavijo also called for resources and advance preparation, accusing Spain’s government of leaving the islands without the response they needed. That is his political assessment; it does not resolve the circumstances of the deaths or the outstanding questions about the survivors’ health. 36
Seven boats, one reported fatal voyage
The fatal crossing was part of a wider day of operations around Lanzarote and El Hierro. Salvamento Marítimo’s detailed operational summary lists seven boats carrying a total of 401 surviving passengers. Its centres in Las Palmas and Tenerife coordinated the operations. The seven reported deaths belong to the Guardamar Urania’s rescue, not to seven separate fatal incidents. 56
At Lanzarote, the 132 survivors brought in by the Guardamar Urania were joined by passengers from three other boats. The Salvamar Al Nair rescued 35 people from one and 36 from another; the Salvamar Acrux rescued 59. Together, those four boats account for 262 survivors landed at Arrecife. The two recovered bodies are separate from that subtotal. 56
At El Hierro, the Salvamar Navia escorted two boats to La Restinga carrying 90 and 19 people. The Salvamar Diphda escorted another carrying 30. Those listed counts add up to 139 people at La Restinga, making 401 survivors across the two ports. Of those, 269 travelled on boats other than the one associated with the reported deaths. 56
There is a discrepancy in the regional coverage: Gaceta del Meridiano reported 129 people aboard three boats arriving at El Hierro, while the rescue service’s listed counts—90, 19 and 30—produce 139. Canariasdiario also reported a total of 401 people assisted. The boat-by-boat arithmetic supports 139 for La Restinga, but the reason for the lower figure has not been explained. 665662
An earlier tally in The Independent counted another 250 people rescued on Monday beyond the fatal voyage’s 132 survivors, producing 382. The fuller operational breakdown supersedes that earlier count; it is not a separate group to add to it. The available accounts do not identify exactly which passengers explain the difference. The Independent’s separate report of 107 people rescued off El Hierro on Sunday, November 1, falls outside Monday’s total. 156
The broader arrival figures also need their own time frame. The Independent, citing the Spanish government’s representative in the islands, reported 11,527 arrivals for the year to that point, down 18 percent from the same period in 2025. Yet crossings had jumped in October, renewing pressure on emergency services, especially on smaller islands. A lower annual total does not mean an even or manageable pace of arrivals. 1
For the people aboard the Guardamar Urania’s rescue, the most urgent unfinished account is not the daily total. It is what caused the deaths, whether the five deaths described by survivors can be independently confirmed, and what care the 132 rescued passengers now need. Reaching port alive is established. Reaching port unharmed is not.

- The Guardamar Urania brought 132 survivors and two bodies ashore.
- Survivors said five other passengers died before their bodies were put into the sea. That brings the voyage's reported toll to at least seven. What happened during the crossing, and how are the 132 survivors doing?
- Rescuers reached the boat early Monday, November second, about 150 kilometres northeast of Arrecife on Lanzarote. That's about 94 miles offshore. The Guardamar Urania then brought the survivors and the two bodies to Arrecife.
- The five other bodies haven't been recovered. Survivors told rescuers those passengers had died during the journey. We don't know when during the crossing the deaths happened, so the Monday rescue date doesn't tell us when they died.
- The reported voyage total is 139 people. That fits the 132 survivors, two recovered bodies and five further deaths described by passengers. Rescuers brought 132 people ashore alive; the larger figure includes those reported to have died.
- A storm was reported during the crossing, but nobody has confirmed what caused the deaths. Survivors said the five passengers were already dead when their bodies went into the sea. The circumstances of how that happened are still unclear.
- Six other boats also received help that Monday around Lanzarote and El Hierro. Spain's maritime rescue service, Salvamento Marítimo, coordinated the operations through its centres in Las Palmas and Tenerife. The detailed breakdown counts the people brought to each port.
- The Guardamar Urania rescued 132 survivors. The Salvamar Al Nair rescued 35 people from one boat and 36 from another. The Salvamar Acrux rescued 59. Together, those four boats brought 262 surviving passengers to Arrecife.
- The two recovered bodies were brought to port separately from that survivor count. The seven reported deaths belong to the Guardamar Urania's rescue. They shouldn't be spread across the other boats involved in the day's operations.
- The Salvamar Navia escorted two boats to La Restinga, carrying 90 people and 19. The Salvamar Diphda escorted another carrying 30. Those three boats brought 139 people to the port on El Hierro.
- A lower total of 129 also circulated for El Hierro. But the listed boat counts add up to 139. Combined with Arrecife's 262, the detailed operations total 401 survivors across seven boats. Of those survivors, 269 travelled on the other six boats.
- An earlier Monday tally counted another 250 people rescued beyond the fatal voyage's 132 survivors. That made 382. The fuller daily breakdown reaches 401, and includes those earlier rescues. Adding the two totals together would count people twice.
- The detailed count of 401 survivors replaces the earlier tally of 382. Nobody has explained exactly which passengers account for the difference. Another 107 people were reported rescued off El Hierro on Sunday, November first, outside Monday's total.
- The wider Atlantic route brings people from West Africa toward Spain's Canary Islands, through rough seas and strong currents. Arrivals often rise in autumn as sea conditions improve. Crossings jumped in October, even though the year's arrivals were below the same period in 2025.
- The Spanish government's representative in the islands put arrivals at 11,527, down 18 percent year on year. The renewed crossings put pressure on emergency services, especially on smaller islands. Those regional figures don't tell us where this particular boat departed.
- Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo Batlle said the Atlantic route was once again claiming lives. He called for more resources and preparation, and accused Spain's government of leaving the islands without the response they needed.
- For this crossing, 132 people reached port alive. Their condition hasn't been confirmed, and there's no reliable hospital-transfer or injury count. Two passengers' bodies were recovered. The five further deaths remain based on survivors' accounts, and the cause of the deaths is still unknown.
