Four employees were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported. The chef’s initial one-to-two-day closure estimate has reached its window, but reopening remains unconfirmed.
Heavy flames were coming from the northwest corner of Salt Life Food Shack’s second-story patio when firefighters responded on November 2. Four employees were safely evacuated from the Fernandina Beach restaurant, and no injuries were reported. 1 18
That is the clearest reassurance to emerge since the fire. The business’s return to service is less certain. Corporate chef Harrison Smith expected a closure of one or two days, according to the Florida Times-Union’s November 2 photo captions. As of this November 4 follow-up, that expected window has arrived without a verified reopening announcement. An estimate of a short shutdown is not confirmation that customers can return. 1
Ukweli muhimu
We first reported the fire on November 2 at 10:12 a.m. Eastern, describing a morning response and flames across the restaurant’s upper portion, based on News4JAX’s account. Our report did not establish an evacuation count, injury status or prospects for reopening. The subsequent findings fill those gaps; they do not revise an earlier casualty count or reopening promise. 2
The operational account is now more specific. The Fernandina Beach Fire Department responded at 6:16 a.m. to a commercial structure fire at 17 North Fletcher Avenue. The Times-Union identified the northwest second-story patio as the location of the heavy flames. That time records the department’s response, not when the fire began. 1
Action News Jax reported that the fire was contained to the second-story patio. It also separately reported no injuries. Those are distinct findings: the safe evacuation of four employees establishes that they got out, while the injury report addresses whether anyone was reported hurt. Neither finding, by itself, establishes that the building was cleared for people to return. 18
Doug Engle’s photographs for the Times-Union document visible damage on the second floor, including at the second-story wall, and employees sitting on the restaurant’s front steps afterward. The pictures establish damage, but not a structural assessment, a repair bill or a finding that the restaurant was destroyed. 1
The local follow-ups carrying the evacuation count appeared after our earlier broadcast: Action News Jax displayed a 10:51 a.m. Eastern publication time, First Coast News 11:46 a.m., and the Times-Union gallery 12:13 p.m. on November 2. First Coast News explicitly attributed the count to the fire department. Those publication times do not establish when the department first released the information; its original statement and release time have not been independently verified. 18 26 1
A short estimate, not a reopening
Smith’s expectation of a day or two offered the prospect of a relatively brief interruption. Other early coverage described a longer one: a News4JAX video headline, carried by Cebugle and Spot On Florida, anticipated closure for several days. These were differing provisional descriptions, not competing confirmations of an actual reopening date. Neither establishes how long the shutdown ultimately lasted. 1 20 25
The restaurant’s general location page says it opens daily for lunch and dinner. But that statement is undated and does not explicitly address service after the fire. It cannot stand in for a post-fire reopening announcement. Equally, the absence of a verified announcement here does not prove the restaurant remained closed throughout November 4. Its operating status remains unconfirmed. 3
For employees and customers, the missing information is practical: whether service has resumed and, if not, when it will. There is no verified account here of a completed safety inspection, permission to re-enter, repair costs, staffing arrangements or lost wages. A short closure estimate should not be made to answer those separate questions.
The Times-Union reported that the fire was under investigation on November 2. That is the dated status from the day of the incident, not evidence of a new investigative development on November 4. The cause has not been established in the available reporting. 1
The update therefore settles the most immediate human question without settling the business one: four employees got out safely, and no injuries were reported. When customers could return still requires confirmation, not an extension of the chef’s initial estimate.

- Four employees got out safely after fire shut Salt Life Food Shack. On November 2, we reported a morning fire and flames across the restaurant's upper level in Fernandina Beach.
- The restaurant's corporate chef expected a closure of one to two days. That window has now arrived. The unresolved question is when customers can return.
- Firefighters responded at 6:16 in the morning on November 2. The Fernandina Beach Fire Department went to Salt Life Food Shack on North Fletcher Avenue. Heavy flames were coming from the northwest corner of its second-story patio.
- The fire was contained to that patio. That gives a more specific picture than the upper-level flames described in our earlier broadcast.
- All four employees were safely evacuated from the building. No injuries were reported, a separate finding that also answers the earlier uncertainty about whether anyone was hurt.
- The restaurant's second floor suffered visible damage, including damage to the second-story wall. Employees sat on the front steps after the incident. The fire interrupted operations at the restaurant, while the initial closure estimate suggested a relatively short shutdown.
- Corporate chef Harrison Smith gave that estimate on November 2. He expected the restaurant to close for a day or two. Other early coverage anticipated several days.
- The expectations ranged from one to two days to several days. Employees and customers were left with different possible lengths for the interruption. Both descriptions were provisional, and the shorter estimate has reached its stated window.
- The fire was under investigation on November 2. Its cause remains unknown. Safe evacuation and containment answer important questions about the incident, but customers still need a confirmed reopening announcement. As of this November 4 follow-up, an actual reopening hasn't been confirmed.
