Four dead, 15 injured in Deep Ellum shootings: correcting our earlier toll

தீராதவை என்று நாங்கள் சொன்னவை

  1. The suspect’s identity, any charges, and whether investigators have established a link among the three shootings remain unverified.

    இன்னும் தீரவில்லை

No verified suspect names, charges or complete arrest-to-scene accounting are available. Investigators still have not established whether the three shootings were connected.12

  2. A police update allocating victims to each scene and explaining the custody decision would clarify both the toll and the scope of the investigation.

    இன்னும் தீரவில்லை

Families have identified two people killed, but a complete street-by-street casualty accounting remains missing. The several-arrests description does not explain the custody decisions or each arrested person’s role.1947181

Families have named two of the four people killed. Police describe several arrests, but names, charges and each person’s connection to the three shootings remain unclear.

Thomas Jennings was cleaning barware as St. Pete’s Dancing Marlin prepared to close when he looked up and saw people ducking and running. During the gunfire outside, the Deep Ellum bar manager brought a woman inside and locked the door. He told CBS Texas that she had witnessed the shooting and that her car was totaled. For people working through Halloween night, safety had suddenly become a locked door.1

Families are now identifying some of those who did not make it home. WFAA names Quincy McCleary and a 21-year-old woman, Kanisea Scott, as two of the four people killed in the three shootings that interrupted celebrations in the Dallas neighborhood overnight into November 1. NBC 5 renders Scott’s first name as Kaniesa. That spelling difference remains unresolved; the accounts concern the same reported victim, not another death. Neither person has been publicly assigned to a particular shooting scene in the reporting available here.4718

The established toll remains four people killed and at least 15 injured. Police Chief Daniel Comeaux says several people were arrested and investigators are seeking additional suspects. But the arrests still lack the details that would explain responsibility: an exact total, names, charges and a complete account of each person’s connection to the shootings.12

Arrests without a clear accounting

CBS Texas’s November 2 report quotes Comeaux describing several arrests and a continuing search. ABC News’s November 2 account describes one suspect in custody and at least one other being sought. Those custody descriptions have not been reconciled. They might reflect different reporting times or different categories of custody, but neither explanation has been established. Several arrests cannot be translated into several charged gunmen; one suspect in custody does not establish that only one person was arrested.12

Nor is this evidence of a newly completed round of arrests. In our November 1 follow-up, aired at 20:28 UTC, we had already reported multiple people in custody, uncertain roles and a search for additional shooters. Comeaux’s account reinforces that multiple-arrest description without establishing when those arrests occurred or whether any happened after our previous report.

The distinction matters because an arrest count is not an explanation of three shootings. Until investigators identify whom they believe responsible for which acts, the public cannot tell how much of the case police consider resolved—or how much of the danger remains unaccounted for.

Police also have not established whether the shootings were connected. Comeaux’s assessment is preliminary, not a finding that the incidents definitively had nothing to do with one another.2

At this time, we have no information that they are related, but we're still doing an investigation to try to figure that out at this time.

Three scenes over more than an hour

The preliminary police chronology places the shootings on Elm, Main and South Crowdus streets. These are the same three reported scenes, not newly discovered incidents. Their approximate times span 75 minutes, correcting the earlier description that the shootings unfolded within minutes.2

November 1: preliminary police chronology

  1. About 12:20 a.m., local time

A shooting near the 2600 block of Elm Street.

    2
  2. About 1:05 a.m., local time

A shooting in the 2600 block of Main Street.

    2
  3. About 1:35 a.m., local time

A shooting in the 200 block of South Crowdus Street.

    2

Some earlier location descriptions remain unexplained. CBS Texas initially described a convenience-store parking lot around midnight and gunfire near Commerce and South Crowdus streets; NBC 5 earlier reported a later call on South Ervay Street. The preliminary police list provides the current chronology but does not explain how every earlier description fits it. Those descriptions cannot be counted as extra shootings or used to enlarge the casualty total.22182

The human toll at each street is also incomplete. An earlier Dallas Morning News account described three deaths at one location, one at another, and no deaths but at least six wounded at a third. It did not reliably map that breakdown to all three streets or distribute all 15 injuries. The initial report of five people shot during an apparent parking-lot altercation likewise did not establish each person’s outcome.1922

ABC News, citing reporting by its affiliate WFAA, says police sources described a man allegedly threatening to “start shooting” at a location where at least three people were killed. That preliminary account does not identify the man, connect him to an arrest or establish a motive shared across the three scenes. Proximity is not proof of coordination, a common shooter or a common cause.2

What the casualty correction means

Our first November 1 report gave five injuries. Our follow-up that day corrected that figure to 15, separate from the four deaths. The November 1 police statement, reproduced by National Dossier, states: “Among the 19 victims, four were pronounced deceased and 15 were injured.” That is 19 victims altogether—not 19 injured in addition to those killed.46

The correction does not establish that ten people were newly discovered after our first broadcast. The statement’s precise publication time and any subsequent update time have not been established. Current reporting describes at least 15 injured, and Comeaux says the count could rise because some wounded people took themselves to nearby hospitals. Their present medical conditions and eventual outcomes are not established.2

The family identifications bring two people into focus, but they do not complete the victim list. There is no verified age for McCleary in these accounts, no complete roster of the four people killed and no reconciled accounting that places each death and injury at a scene.471819

Video, and a place to speak

Comeaux is asking people to share potentially useful footage, including recordings they believe show little. “We need all the videos you have. If you have anything, even if you don't think it may show anything, you never know,” he said. The request reflects an investigation still trying to reconstruct what happened at each scene.1

For neighborhood workers, the violence also threatens to define a night that began very differently. Burrito Bandits owner Carlton Scott described costumes, a busy evening and a good atmosphere before the shootings. He and other workers expressed frustration with Deep Ellum’s reputation. Their accounts describe people celebrating and working before the gunfire, not evidence that patrons or the neighborhood itself caused it.1

City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert says officers were on the ground and responded immediately, and promises further information as the investigation continues. Mayor Eric L. Johnson has called for continued work on strategies to keep Deep Ellum a safe gathering place. Comeaux has emphasized education, awareness and officers engaging through the Neighborhood Police Officer program. Those commitments are a public response, not yet the missing explanation of who did what.21

The Deep Ellum Foundation has announced listening sessions with Mayor Pro Tem Moreno at the Deep Ellum Community Center on Wednesday, November 4, at 6 p.m., and Friday, November 6, at 2 p.m., local time. The meetings offer a place for residents and workers to be heard; they are not a promised deadline for police disclosures. Families still await the more consequential answer: which arrested people, if any, will face charges for each of the three shootings.1

Deep Ellum families identify two victims as arrest questions remain
ஒளிபரப்பானபடி
  1. Families have identified two of the four people killed in the Deep Ellum shootings. At least 15 others were injured, and police are still seeking additional suspects.
  2. On November 1, we reported multiple people in custody and corrected our original five-injured figure to 15. Police still haven't explained which arrests connect to which shooting.
  3. Chief Daniel Comeaux says several people were arrested. A competing figure puts one suspect in custody, with at least one other sought. Those figures haven't been reconciled, and multiple arrests were already being described on November 1.
  4. Police haven't named the arrested people, given an exact arrest total or explained their charges and roles at each scene. The chief's account doesn't tell us when those arrests happened. Investigators still have to explain who they believe was responsible for each shooting.
  5. Police counted four deaths and 15 injuries, for 19 victims altogether. The current injury count is at least 15, and Comeaux says it could rise because some wounded people took themselves to nearby hospitals. The four deaths are counted separately from the injuries.
  6. Three shooting scenes lie in Dallas's Deep Ellum neighborhood. Gunfire interrupted Halloween celebrations overnight into November 1. Investigators are examining what happened at each location and whether anything connects them.
  7. Police place the Elm Street shooting at about 12:20 a.m., Main Street at about 1:05 a.m., and South Crowdus Street at about 1:35 a.m. Those approximate local times span more than an hour, correcting the earlier description of shootings within minutes.
  8. Police's street list still leaves earlier location details unresolved, including a convenience-store parking lot, Commerce near South Crowdus, and South Ervay Street. The investigation covers three shootings. The differing location descriptions haven't been reconciled, so they can't be used to expand that total.
  9. An earlier scene breakdown put three deaths at one location, one at another, and at least six wounded with no deaths at a third. Police haven't provided a complete street-by-street accounting. The earlier description of five people shot during an apparent parking-lot altercation also leaves individual outcomes unclear.
  10. Thomas Jennings brought a woman inside St. Pete's Dancing Marlin and locked the door during the gunfire. The bar manager said he had been cleaning barware before closing when he looked up and saw people ducking and running.
  11. Jennings said the woman witnessed the shooting and her car was totaled. Video showed people scrambling for safety. Burrito Bandits owner Carlton Scott described a busy night of costumes and a good atmosphere before the shootings. He and other neighborhood workers expressed frustration with Deep Ellum's reputation.
  12. Families have named Quincy McCleary and a 21-year-old woman surnamed Scott among those killed. Her first name appears as Kanisea and Kaniesa, and that spelling difference remains unresolved. Those names identify two of the four people killed. Police haven't supplied a complete victim list or assigned each person's death or injuries to a particular scene.
  13. Comeaux is asking people to share every potentially useful video, even footage they think shows little. He says detectives and officers are still piecing together each scene. Police have no information connecting the shootings, but they're continuing to investigate that possibility.
  14. A preliminary police account described a man threatening to “start shooting” at a location where at least three people were killed. Police haven't identified that man or connected him to an arrest. Investigators are still working out what prompted each shooting. Comeaux's assessment that they appear unrelated remains preliminary.
  15. City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert says officers were on the ground and responded immediately. She promises the investigation will continue and more information will be released. Mayor Eric L. Johnson says public safety must remain the city's top priority.
  16. Johnson called for continued work on strategies to keep Deep Ellum a safe gathering place. Comeaux emphasized education, awareness and the Neighborhood Police Officer program. He wants officers engaging with the community. Families and neighborhood workers are still waiting to learn which arrested people will face charges for each shooting.
  17. The Deep Ellum Foundation has announced two listening sessions with Mayor Pro Tem Moreno at the Deep Ellum Community Center. The first is Wednesday, November 4, at 6 p.m. The second is Friday, November 6, at 2 p.m., local time.
