The administration wants its ambassador to Greece to leave. Reported resignation and a watchdog inquiry still leave the disputed messages, money and alleged official assistance unresolved.

- The White House asked Guilfoyle to resign, and a State Department watchdog investigation is reported. Neither development establishes misconduct.
The White House called Kimberly Guilfoyle a “wonderful asset to the team”—and asked her to resign. Press secretary Katie Zacharia delivered both messages on October 13, 2026, announcing that the administration wanted its ambassador to Greece to leave without explaining why, naming a successor or giving a departure deadline.1076
The decision followed allegations that Guilfoyle asked Trump donor Eric Deters for $100,000 toward an American Express bill while offering political access or help. She denies misconduct; her lawyer disputes the messages’ authenticity. The administration has decided she should go. It has not publicly established that the alleged bargain occurred.1
Associated Press, PBS carrying AP reporting, and The Wall Street Journal subsequently reported that Guilfoyle resigned on October 13. But CNN’s account later that day said her personal statement did not explicitly say she had submitted a resignation. Those are different claims: a resignation could have been confirmed separately from her post. The available accounts do not document that underlying confirmation, a resignation letter or an effective departure date. The firmest official statement remains the White House’s request.961011062
When we reported this story on October 9, House Oversight Committee Democrats had requested Guilfoyle’s financial records and communications with administration officials. No removal decision or State Department inspector-general inquiry was then established. Now there is an official personnel decision and a reported watchdog investigation. The evidence needed to resolve the payment allegation remains unfinished.6165114
A departure without a public finding
President Donald Trump made his dissatisfaction public on October 12, saying he was considering firing Guilfoyle. His remarks included “we’re looking at it” and “we’re not happy.” The Guardian had reported on October 11, citing an unnamed senior official, that Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were weighing her removal and expected to decide after Monday’s federal holiday. Those accounts of deliberation have been overtaken by the resignation request.13816
That is a change from Rubio’s earlier public posture. In Athens on October 8, he praised Guilfoyle and the embassy while saying he had not seen the material and did not know whether it was true. His later reported participation in removal discussions establishes a shift in the administration’s personnel response, not a disclosed conclusion about the evidence.246416
Guilfoyle’s response was a denial, not an admission. She called the misconduct reports false and said she intended to defend her name, reputation and integrity. Published fragments of her statement describe serving as ambassador as something that “has been the honor of a lifetime” and say she would “vigorously defend” herself. Neither her gratitude to Trump and Rubio nor the White House’s farewell praise settles the accusations.29796
The money claims must stay separate
The central allegation concerns Guilfoyle’s nomination period, not an established transfer while she was serving at the embassy. In our October 9 report, we described the Journal’s account of a July 3, 2025 Signal request, six days before her July 9 nomination hearing. That precise message date remains part of the earlier reporting; the subsequent accounts do not independently recover the dated exchange.448021
The disputed wording included: “It won’t show up anywhere if you wire money to American Express.” That is an assertion attributed to the message—not an established fact about whether a wire transfer leaves financial records. ABC said it reviewed messages Deters supplied, including an alleged same-day payment request and wire instructions. Deters says he declined to pay.5621
Deters calls the request a quid pro quo: money for a benefit. He says he understood payment could secure access to senior administration or White House officials, and describes an offer of loyalty using “ride or die in Trump world.” Other accounts describe help with tax or legal problems. Those descriptions do not establish the complete terms of a single agreement. Deters also says he received no favor in return.211
The authenticity dispute is explicit. CBS News said on October 13 that it had been told the text messages were authentic. The Guardian’s October 13 account carried lawyer Jesse Binnall’s challenge to their authenticity. Even authentication would leave further questions about context, any legitimate debt and whether official access was offered for personal payment.131
Three different sums recur in the reporting and should not be collapsed into one transaction. In an October 9 NewsNation interview carried by The Hill, Deters said he paid Guilfoyle $300,000 in three $100,000 installments for three Patriots Day Freedom Fest appearances. He described the AmEx request as another $100,000, which he declined. The appearance payments remain his account, not independently verified bank records.20
He also described a separate $1 million offer after the 2024 festival, payable when the matter involving Dr. Atik Durrani was resolved. Deters says he wanted help drawing attention to his effort to have Durrani extradited from Pakistan and never paid that amount. Another account connects a proposed benefit to access to IRS Commissioner Billy Long during a probe into Deters’s tax deductions. No complete agreement establishes whether these descriptions concern the same promise or how either relates to the AmEx request.2094
Deters’s motive matters, too. He says he publicized his account partly to advance the extradition campaign and because the administration had not helped patients he represents. In his PBS interview, he expressly described retaliation. That gives readers context for his testimony; it does not prove the messages true or false.18
The investigation cannot end with departure
The watchdog question has advanced without becoming a public finding. On October 11, The Guardian quoted an official saying the State Department inspector general was looking into the allegations but could not confirm a formal investigation. On October 13, CNN reported an investigation, citing a source familiar with the matter. Deters said the office had not contacted him. The later account advances the earlier one; it does not supply a formal opening date, scope or conclusion.1614
Congressional evidence-seeking is similarly incomplete. Oversight ranking Democrat Robert Garcia’s October 8 letter sought financial records and administration communications. It was a Democratic-minority request, not an established full-committee subpoena. No verified production, response, subpoena or scheduled hearing is documented, and the complete request categories, date ranges and deadline remain unavailable.6561
The alleged IRS assistance remains unresolved. The Hill’s October 12 programme, describing Journal reporting, alleged that Guilfoyle contacted Long about Deters’s case. No authenticated communication, documented IRS intervention or tax outcome establishes that account. A claimed contact is not proof of contact; contact alone would not prove a change in tax treatment.1594

- The messages’ full context, any legitimate outstanding debt, the terms of the separate million-dollar offer and any official assistance remain unresolved.
அடுத்து
- Watch for a documented effective departure date, evidence produced to Congress, public watchdog findings and whether Deters’s planned conversations with two lawmakers on October 14 occur.
Deters also says he intends to sue Guilfoyle and her lawyers for defamation, but no filed complaint is established. His announced legal action and planned congressional conversations are possible routes to evidence, not proceedings already proved to have begun.2
Removing an ambassador can answer who should represent the United States in Athens. It cannot answer whether access to government was offered as something a donor could purchase to meet a nominee’s personal financial needs—or whether the request concerned legitimate compensation. That distinction requires records and scrutiny that survive a departure from office.

White House Asks Guilfoyle to Resign. The Money Questions Remain.
ஒளிபரப்பானபடி
- On October 9 we reported Democrats sought records. Now the White House wants Guilfoyle's resignation.
- The decision puts America's ambassador to Greece on the way out after a donor alleged she offered access for money. Guilfoyle denies misconduct. What will her departure resolve, and what still needs investigating?
- Kimberly Guilfoyle faces an official request to leave her diplomatic post. The administration has decided she should go, while she continues to reject the accusations involving Trump donor Eric Deters.
- The White House announced its decision on October 13, during press secretary Katie Zacharia's first briefing. Zacharia offered praise alongside the request, but didn't explain why the administration wanted Guilfoyle to leave.
- Zacharia said, “We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign. She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well.” She gave no departure deadline or replacement.
- Donald Trump had said the previous day that he was considering firing Guilfoyle. He told reporters, “we're looking at it” and “we're not happy.” Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio had reportedly been weighing her removal.
- Rubio had praised Guilfoyle and the embassy in Athens on October 8. He said he hadn't seen the material and didn't know whether it was true. The administration's decision to seek her departure followed that earlier public defense.
- Guilfoyle reportedly resigned on October 13. Her personal statement didn't explicitly say she'd submitted a resignation, and her effective departure date still isn't clear.
- Guilfoyle called the misconduct allegations false and said she'd “vigorously defend” herself. She described serving as ambassador as something that “has been the honor of a lifetime,” and thanked Trump and Rubio.
- The disputed request concerns her nomination period. Deters alleges she wanted him to pay an American Express bill before the Senate had confirmed her appointment.
- The alleged Signal request was dated July third, 2025, six days before her July ninth nomination hearing. The Senate confirmed Guilfoyle on September eighteenth by a vote of 51 to 47.
- Deters calls the request a quid pro quo, meaning money in exchange for a benefit. He says he understood that paying could secure access to senior Trump administration or White House officials.
- Deters alleges Guilfoyle asked him for $100,000 toward her American Express bill. He says he refused to pay that amount, and says he received no favor in return.
- Deters describes an offer of loyalty using the phrase “ride or die in Trump world.” He also describes possible access or help with legal and tax problems. His description of an exchange remains an accusation.
- Deters says Guilfoyle wanted the money wired directly to American Express. The disputed wording includes, “It won't show up anywhere if you wire money to American Express.” Her lawyer challenges the messages' authenticity.
- Another disputed message says, “Honey, please, I need you to get this done for me today.” Deters supplied messages containing an alleged same-day request and wire instructions. The claim about leaving no trace is itself part of the disputed wording.
- The texts have also been described as authentic. Guilfoyle's lawyer Jesse Binnall disputes that. Their authenticity and full context remain contested, alongside the question of what the requested money was for.
- Guilfoyle's legal team denies improper conduct and says she was collecting outstanding speaking and consulting fees. Other explanations have included travel expenses and reimbursements. Deters rejects the suggestion that he owed her the requested money.
- Deters says he'd already paid Guilfoyle to appear at Patriots Day Freedom Fest. In an October 9 interview, he described three appearances and three separate payments. Those earlier payments are his account.
- Deters says he paid $300,000 for three appearances, in three $100,000 installments. He says he refused another $100,000 AmEx request. He separately describes a conditional $1 million offer after the 2024 festival.
- He says that million-dollar offer concerned his campaign to have Dr. Atik Durrani extradited from Pakistan. Deters says payment would come when the matter was resolved, and that he never paid it.
- A separate allegation connects a proposed benefit to access to IRS Commissioner Billy Long during a probe into Deters's tax deductions. It also alleges Guilfoyle contacted Long about Deters's case.
- Whether that contact happened, or led to any IRS action, is still unclear. The terms of the alleged million-dollar offer also remain unsettled, including how it relates to the later AmEx request.
- Deters says he went public partly because the administration hadn't helped patients he represents, and partly to draw attention to his extradition campaign. In one interview, he described retaliation for that failure.
- The White House's decision changes who represents the United States in Athens. The disputed money-for-access claim concerns how a nominee might have used connections to officials in Washington before taking that post.
- The State Department's watchdog is reportedly investigating. On October 11, an official said it was looking into the allegations. By October 13, an investigation was being described, while Deters said the office hadn't contacted him.
- The inspector general hasn't publicly explained the inquiry's scope or confirmed when a formal investigation began. Deters's lack of contact leaves those questions open.
- Former ambassador Jeff Flake argued that financial disclosures and vulnerability to blackmail matter when vetting ambassadors. His comments describe the risks officials should examine when choosing someone to represent the country abroad.
- Robert Garcia sought Guilfoyle's financial records and communications with administration officials in an October 8 letter. Garcia, Gregory Meeks and Jeanne Shaheen have called for investigation. Garcia acted as House Oversight's ranking Democrat.
- Garcia's letter described an alleged $100,000 demand for senior-official access and a promised $1 million payoff later. Those descriptions belong to the Democrats' request for records. They haven't become committee findings.
- The administration has settled the immediate personnel question by asking Guilfoyle to leave. Whether the disputed request concerned legitimate professional fees or money for government access still needs resolving. Deters says he declined the AmEx payment and received no favor.
- Deters says he intends to sue Guilfoyle and her lawyers for defamation, although whether he'll file is still unclear. He also says two lawmakers contacted him and that he planned to speak with them on October 14.
