Mike Ditka belonged to two different generations of Bears champions: the tight end who helped Chicago win the 1963 NFL title, and the head coach whose 1985 team delivered the franchise’s only Super Bowl victory. His family announced his death at 86 on Friday, October 9, 2026. Chicago has lost a living connection between those teams, not simply the familiar face of one extraordinary season.57194
Born October 18, 1939, Ditka was nine days short of his 87th birthday. The nicknames—“Iron Mike” and “Da Coach”—captured the public figure. His family’s announcement described a different kind of importance, remembering a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. Jarrett Payton, Walter Payton’s son, publicly shared the statement.2930
While the world knew Mike as a Hall of Fame football player, legendary coach, and leader of the Chicago Bears’ Super Bowl XX championship team, we knew him as the heart of our family.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Ditka died about 9 a.m. Friday, surrounded by family and friends, citing an unnamed family spokesperson. His longtime agent and business partner, Steve Mandell, told USA TODAY Sports that he died of “natural causes.” Mandell said he had spoken with Ditka on Thursday and learned of his death the next morning.5652
Those accounts add details that the family statement itself did not provide. The reported morning time has no explicitly established timezone, the precise location remains unconfirmed, and Mandell’s description is not a released medical determination. Initial reporting that a cause was unavailable was followed by the agent’s account, not by a specific medical explanation.305652
The player behind the coach
The famous coach can obscure how much Ditka had accomplished before he ever led the Bears. Michael Keller Ditka played at the University of Pittsburgh from 1958 through 1960; his college career earned induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986. Chicago selected him fifth overall in the 1961 NFL draft.691
His arrival was emphatic: 56 catches, 1,076 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns in 14 games, earning NFL Rookie of the Year. A tight end still had blocking work to do, but Ditka’s receiving production showed how much more the position could offer. His reputation for toughness did not come at the expense of his ability to catch the ball.13528
He played six seasons for Chicago, two for Philadelphia and four for Dallas, finishing in 1972. Across those 12 NFL seasons, he caught 427 passes for 5,812 yards and 43 receiving touchdowns. His five Pro Bowl selections followed the 1961 through 1965 seasons. The separate total of 45 career touchdowns includes two fumble-recovery scores; it does not mean he caught 45 touchdown passes.182114
Championships before and after the sideline
His Dallas touchdown came at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, from the quarterback who would be named that game’s Most Valuable Player. It was the Cowboys’ final touchdown in Super Bowl VI. That contribution deserves a place in the remembrance: Ditka’s championship career did not begin with the 1985 Bears.110108
The season that defined Chicago
The 1985 Bears finished the regular season 15–1, then allowed no points in either of their first two playoff games: 21–0 over the New York Giants and 24–0 over the Los Angeles Rams. The Super Bowl victory made them 18–1 across the regular season and postseason. Dominance was not merely a memory attached to that team; it was there in the results.141142
At the Louisiana Superdome on January 26, 1986, Chicago beat New England 46–10. The Bears scored 21 unanswered points in the third quarter, and their 46-point total was a Super Bowl record at the time. It remains their only Super Bowl championship—not their only league title. Ditka participated in the franchise’s two most recent league championships, first as a player, then as head coach.10411310771
His Bears tenure ended far from that peak. After a 5–11 season in 1992, team president Michael McCaskey dismissed him on January 5, 1993, briefly retaining him as a consultant. Ditka later coached the New Orleans Saints from 1997 through 1999 and worked as a broadcaster. The championship endured; the job did not.1607926
Football had already recognized his playing achievements in 1988, when he became the first tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Chicago retired his No. 89 on December 9, 2013, at halftime against Dallas at Soldier Field—the Bears’ 14th number retirement, designated their final one. The ceremony honored the player as well as the coach.14126127124
The Bears’ tribute said: “Player. Coach. Legend. Mike Ditka embodied the spirit of Chicago and will be deeply missed.” No confirmed dated funeral or memorial service was available in the reporting examined. For now, the public remembrance rests beside the family’s simpler description: the heart of their family. Both belong in the account of his life.1382530

- Mike Ditka has died at 86. Chicago has lost the Hall of Fame tight end who coached its only Super Bowl champions. Fans are waiting to learn when a funeral or memorial service will take place.
- Ditka's family announced his death on October ninth. He was nine days short of his eighty-seventh birthday. The Bears and the Pro Football Hall of Fame also paid tribute to a man known as Iron Mike and Da Coach.
- A family spokesperson said Ditka died around nine Friday morning, surrounded by family and friends. His longtime agent and business partner, Steve Mandell, said he died of natural causes. No medical explanation has been released.
- Mandell had spoken with Ditka the day before and learned of his death the following morning. The family's announcement focused on the man they loved.
- His family called him a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. They wrote that the world knew his football achievements, but they knew him as “the heart of our family.” They said he'd be “missed beyond measure and remembered forever.”
- Jarrett Payton, Walter Payton's son, publicly shared the statement. Chicago fans and sports-radio callers responded emotionally to the news. Their memories reached beyond the famous coach to a player who helped expand what a tight end could do.
- Ditka caught 56 passes for 1,076 yards as a rookie. He scored 12 receiving touchdowns in 14 games and won NFL Rookie of the Year. Chicago had selected him fifth overall in the 1961 draft.
- His receiving skills added another threat to a position built around blocking. Before the NFL, Michael Keller Ditka played at the University of Pittsburgh from 1958 through 1960. He entered the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986.
- Ditka spent six seasons with the Bears, from 1961 through 1966. He played the next two with Philadelphia, then finished his playing career with Dallas from 1969 through 1972. He earned five Pro Bowl selections, following the 1961 through 1965 seasons.
- Across 12 NFL seasons, Ditka caught 427 passes for 5,812 yards. His regular-season receiving total was 43 touchdowns. His career scoring total also includes touchdowns he scored another way.
- Ditka scored 43 receiving touchdowns and two more on fumble recoveries, bringing his total to 45. He had no rushing touchdowns. Those two fumble-recovery scores explain why his receiving and overall touchdown totals differ.
- Ditka caught the final touchdown in Dallas's 24-to-3 Super Bowl victory over Miami. Roger Staubach, the game's Most Valuable Player, threw him a seven-yard pass in the fourth quarter. The extra point brought Dallas to its final score.
- That was Super Bowl Six, played at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans on January sixteenth, 1972. Ditka had already won an NFL championship with the Bears in 1963. His championship career as a player was complete before his defining years as a coach.
- Ditka returned to Chicago as head coach in 1982 and stayed through the 1992 season. His Bears teams won 106 regular-season games and lost 62. They split their postseason games, with six wins and six losses.
- That gave him a combined Bears record of 112 wins and 68 losses. His peak came in 1985, when Chicago went 15 and one in the regular season, then won all three playoff games.
- The Bears shut out the Giants 21 to nothing, then shut out the Rams 24 to nothing. They beat New England 46 to 10 in Super Bowl Twenty, finishing with 18 wins and just one loss across the entire season.
- The championship game took place at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans on January twenty-sixth, 1986. It crowned the 1985 season. Chicago's 46 points set a Super Bowl record at the time.
- Chicago scored 21 points in the third quarter while New England scored none. The Patriots' only points came in the first and fourth quarters. Ditka's team delivered the Super Bowl championship that still stands alone in Bears history.
- Chicago had won league championships before. Ditka took part in the franchise's two most recent titles, as a player in 1963 and head coach of the 1985 team.
- The Bears finished five and eleven in 1992. Team president Michael McCaskey fired Ditka on January fifth, 1993, nine days after the season ended. Chicago briefly kept him as a consultant. He later coached New Orleans from 1997 through 1999.
- Ditka also worked as a broadcaster. Football had already honored his playing career in 1988, when he became the first tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. That same year, he suffered a heart attack while coaching Chicago.
- Ditka survived a minor stroke in 2012 and another heart attack in 2018. Over those decades, his public life continued, and Chicago gave his playing number a permanent place in team history.
- The Bears retired Ditka's number 89 at Soldier Field on December ninth, 2013. The ceremony came at halftime against Dallas, bringing together the two teams where he'd won playing championships. It was Chicago's fourteenth number retirement, designated its final one.
- The Bears said Ditka “embodied the spirit of Chicago.” The Hall of Fame remembered his toughness and leadership, and his legacy as a player, coach and football icon. A dated funeral or memorial service hasn't been announced.
