Police have reconciled the toll after the Magic City Classic: one dead and eight wounded. A person taken in for questioning and recovered guns have not established who fired.

The casualty count is clearer; responsibility is not. Birmingham police now say nine people were shot near Legion Field after the Magic City Classic—one killed and eight wounded—but taking one person to headquarters for questioning and recovering multiple firearms has not established who fired.1

The updated toll replaces the early account of four injured in the October 31 shooting. It describes the same incident, not another attack or eight additional injuries. Police last reported one of the eight surviving patients in critical condition and seven in stable condition.1

In our November 1 report, we carried the early account of four people injured, with their conditions unconfirmed. Our subsequent coverage that day established a death but left the overall victim count unresolved. The police accounting now closes that numerical gap. It does not explain how the first count was assembled or which patients it included.

The gunfire came shortly after 7:50 p.m. local time on Saturday, October 31, in the 400 block of Graymont Avenue West near the Birmingham, Alabama, stadium. Officers responded and found multiple people with gunshot wounds. Local reporting and the police evidence-submission portal identify the Graymont Avenue West location; the precise firing point and exact minute remain unestablished.11316

A celebration had largely emptied out

The shooting followed the 85th annual Magic City Classic between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University, two historically Black universities. Nearly 70,000 fans attended the football game. That is the game’s attendance—not the number still gathered outside when the shots began.113

Police Chief Michael Pickett said most spectators and families had already left stadium property. Vendors remained along nearby Graymont Avenue, and tailgating had continued after the game. “This did occur after the game,” Pickett said. “For the most part, it was off of the property.”3137

Those details matter because “after the Classic” establishes a setting, not a motive. The available police account does not establish that the victims attended the game, were tailgating or were involved in a dispute connected to the competition. The shooting’s circumstances remained unclear in the updated reporting.35

Police suspended Magic City Classic tailgating, directed people to leave stadium property and urged others not to come to Legion Field. The departure instruction was a protective response. The available updates do not establish when those restrictions were lifted or provide a later all-clear; neither do they establish that an attacker remained nearby.637

Questioning is not an accusation

The police statement is specific about the action investigators took: “One person has been detained and transported to the Birmingham Police Headquarters for questioning.” It does not identify that person as the shooter or announce a criminal charge.1

Coverage has used different language. USA TODAY’s November 1 headline described an arrest, while ABC News’s November 1 account reproduced the police statement describing detention for questioning. No verified booking record, charge or explicit police confirmation that the questioning became a formal arrest is available in these updates. The supported account is that one person was taken in for questioning—not that police have established that person’s responsibility.71

Officers also recovered multiple firearms and placed them in the police property room. Police have not established publicly in the available account how many guns were recovered, who owned them or which were fired. Several recovered weapons do not, by themselves, establish several shooters. That connection requires evidence the recovery announcement does not supply.1

The FBI responded as well, though its precise role has not been established. Investigators are seeking witnesses and video, and Birmingham police have opened an evidence-submission portal for the case. Those accounts and recordings could help establish the sequence of events, but the updates do not yet identify a shooter or motive.216

The medical update has limits

The reported breakdown of one critical patient and seven stable patients is the latest verified police condition update available here, not a fresh assessment from their hospitals. “Stable” should not be read as unharmed, discharged or free of serious injury. Victim names, ages, hospital destinations and later medical outcomes are not established in the available updates.16

The newer breakdown supersedes the preliminary emergency-radio descriptions, reported by the New York Post, of at least two people critically injured and another with minor injuries. Those earlier descriptions cannot be matched to individual patients. They therefore cannot show whether someone’s condition changed or whether the person who died had been included in a preliminary critical count.81

Mayor Randall Woodfin said the community was “hurt, shaken and rightfully angry.” He described the Classic as rooted in HBCU traditions and family, and pledged to pursue justice. His declaration that “no argument, no beef, no misunderstanding” could justify the violence was a condemnation—not an investigative finding that a particular argument caused it.1

The next consequential update is not another description of the scene. It is an account of what the questioning, recovered weapons and witness evidence actually establish, alongside current medical information and a clear public-safety update. For now, police have a reconciled toll and evidence to examine. They have not publicly resolved who turned the gathering into a shooting.

  1. Gunfire near Legion Field has left one person dead and eight others wounded.
  2. On November 1, we reported four people injured, with their conditions unconfirmed. Our subsequent coverage confirmed a death but left the total unresolved. Police now say nine people were shot.
  3. Police have also taken one person to headquarters for questioning and recovered multiple firearms. What have investigators learned about who fired and what led to the gunfire?
  4. Most spectators and families had already left stadium property when the shots began, Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett said. Vendors remained along nearby Graymont Avenue, and tailgating had continued after the game. Pickett said the shooting happened mostly off stadium property.
  5. The gathering followed the eighty-fifth annual Magic City Classic between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University, two historically Black universities. Nearly 70,000 fans attended the game. That was the crowd for the football contest, with most spectators already gone by the time of the shooting.
  6. The nine people hit by gunfire include the person who died and eight survivors. Those eight injured replace the earlier count of four. They belong to the same shooting, so adding the old and new injury figures would count people twice.
  7. Officers responded shortly after 7:50 p.m. on October 31, in the 400 block of Graymont Avenue West. They found multiple people with gunshot wounds. The shooting happened near the stadium after the Classic had ended, while people were still gathered in the surrounding area.
  8. Graymont Avenue West runs by Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama. Emergency crews treated people along Graymont and near Third Street West. Those treatment locations show where help reached patients. They don't tell investigators exactly where the shots were fired.
  9. Police suspended Magic City Classic tailgating after the shooting. They told people to leave stadium property and urged others not to come to Legion Field. The department's description of an active scene accompanied that response. Police haven't provided a later all-clear in the updates available so far.
  10. Police last reported one injured person in critical condition and seven in stable condition. That was the department's latest condition update, and patients' conditions can change. Stable patients can still have serious injuries and need hospital treatment.
  11. The newer police breakdown replaces the earlier estimate of at least two people critically hurt and another with minor injuries. We don't know how those early estimates match individual patients. They can't tell us whether someone's condition changed or whether the person who died was included in an earlier critical count.
  12. Officers recovered multiple firearms and placed them in the police property room. Police also took one person to headquarters for questioning. The department hasn't confirmed that the questioning led to a formal arrest or a criminal charge.
  13. The person detained hasn't been identified as the shooter. Several recovered guns also leave investigators work to do before they can say which weapons were fired and by whom. The FBI responded as well. Investigators are seeking witnesses and video through the police evidence-submission process.
  14. Mayor Randall Woodfin said the community was “hurt, shaken and rightfully angry.” He condemned the violence during a night of celebration and described the Classic as a tradition rooted in family. He pledged to pursue justice for those harmed.
  15. Police haven't said what triggered the shooting or who fired. The mayor's reference to arguments and misunderstandings expressed his condemnation; investigators haven't identified a particular dispute as the cause. The questioning and recovered weapons give investigators evidence to examine, while responsibility for the shooting remains unresolved.
  16. The casualty count is clearer now. Nine people were shot, one died, and eight survived with injuries. Investigators are still seeking witness accounts and video to help determine what happened on Graymont Avenue West.
