Her family describes spinal fractures and a nearly detached finger. Two days after the Abu Falah assault, investigators had not published findings resolving who attacked her or what soldiers did.
Two days after masked Israeli settlers beat American photojournalist Heidi Levine near Abu Falah, police still had not announced an arrest. In that interval, she had undergone surgery, her family had described spinal fractures and a nearly detached finger, and American officials had demanded prosecution. By October 18, the public record showed a clearer picture of the harm—not a demonstrated breakthrough in holding her attackers accountable.15962
Levine, who was covering Palestinian olive harvesters for The Washington Post in the occupied West Bank, was still receiving treatment at Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, Israel, on October 18. The hospital had classified her condition as moderate, reported limb injuries and confirmed surgery by October 17. That classification should not be mistaken for a description of minor injuries or a promise of quick recovery.60155
On October 16, HeyDay News reported the attack northeast of Ramallah, the burning olive trees and Levine’s initial hospital treatment in Ramallah. We reported announced military and police investigations, while leaving her precise injuries and prognosis unresolved. The subsequent medical accounts answer part of that uncertainty. They do not identify her individual assailants or settle what soldiers saw and did.
What the hospital has confirmed
Beilinson’s public statement was narrower than the detailed accounts now circulating. As reported by Ynet on October 17, the hospital said Levine had arrived at its emergency room the previous night and had undergone surgery “in recent hours.” That establishes the operation, but not an exact time. Her treatment in Ramallah was an initial stage, not her latest documented hospital location.60
Her daughter, Ashley Milner, told The Associated Press that Levine had a broken rib, multiple broken vertebrae and lacerations. She said surgeons operated on a finger “nearly detached from her hand.” Those details belong to the family’s account; they are not an itemized injury list released by the hospital. Nor is an exact number of fractured vertebrae consistently established.62
There is also an important limit to the reports of stabbing. An early description that doctors had identified stab wounds came through a hospital visitor; later accounts described possible puncture wounds. The hospital has not confirmed a stabbing. Documented lacerations and deep cuts establish injuries, but do not by themselves establish the instrument that caused them.170
The beating and the soldiers
Levine wore a helmet and a protective vest visibly marked “press.” She described being pushed down, struck with sticks and repeatedly kicked while trying to hold onto her cameras and pouch. She estimated about 50 kicks and a beating lasting roughly ten minutes or longer, and believed her protective equipment kept her alive. These are her estimates, not a measured count or duration. Her cameras, phone and bag were taken or damaged; recovery of her belongings has not been established.1178
Palestinian colleagues helped get her out for medical care. Her account of the danger is also an account of isolation: she says soldiers fired tear gas that dispersed Palestinians and journalists, leaving her alone, and then watched without protecting her. “Fifteen people are beating a woman. Why didn't they help me?” she asked.6461
The military’s account remains in direct conflict with hers. An initial review relayed by military spokesperson Lt. Col. Ariella Mazor on October 16 said troops were attempting to disperse a violent crowd and had not witnessed the attack on Levine. That was an initial-review claim—not a completed finding clearing the soldiers, and not a claim that troops were absent from the area.76
In its formal statement, the military said soldiers and Border Police were dispatched after a report of a violent confrontation and used riot-dispersal measures. It acknowledged that a female journalist had been injured and promised to examine all details. Police and forensic investigators were to enter under military protection to collect evidence and testimony. The announcement described intended investigative steps; it did not establish what evidence had actually been collected.227
The same statement described soldiers firing warning shots, then toward a suspect whom it said ran at them carrying a sharp object. Crucially, it placed that shooting “at another location.” It therefore does not reconstruct the precise scene of Levine’s beating, identify every shot heard during the violence or resolve the condition of every wounded Palestinian.227
Benjamin Netanyahu’s office condemned violence but offered an alternative framing of the wider encounter. It claimed about 200 Arabs and left-wing activists confronted approximately 40 Israeli youths, and suggested footage showed Levine knocked down and immediately helped up by the same person. Those are the office’s claims, not a verified reconstruction or accepted participant count.215
Levine called the suggestion that settlers were helping her “such a lie and the biggest insult.” Her executive editor, Matt Murray, directly challenged the office’s description of unclear facts.70
Our photographer was clearly marked as Press. She was clearly beaten. These are not partisan or risible statements, but indisputable. We urge a thorough investigation and accountability.
The distinction matters. Individual responsibility and the wider sequence still require investigation. The fact that a press-identified journalist was beaten and injured does not need to be suspended until every surrounding dispute is resolved.
Sharper demands, no demonstrated enforcement
U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee demanded investigation, arrest and prosecution to the fullest extent of the law, calling the assault a “despicable act of terror carried out by masked cowards.” His statement was made on October 17; its circulation in October 18 coverage was not another enforcement action. His characterization was a demand for consequences, not an adjudicated terrorism charge. The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem also called for investigations, arrests and convictions.1231487
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington had repeatedly asked Israel to crack down on West Bank violence. He described the images as disturbing, acknowledged that he lacked the full details and said officials expected an embassy assessment later that day or the next. No public account of the assessment’s contents or resulting action had been established by October 18. That does not prove the cable failed to arrive.2
Rubio also defended the earlier lifting of sanctions against settlers, saying it did not mean President Trump supported the violence. No reinstated sanctions or initiated prosecution linked to this assault had been established. Stronger language is a material change in the American response; it is not the same thing as a documented crackdown.2159
For Palestinian harvesters, the immediate consequence was abandoned work. DW reported pickers and activists leaving as settlers approached from a hill. Attackers threw rocks, including with slingshots, and olive groves were set alight. One picker told DW that collection had fallen from 60–70 bags previously to three or four. Without matching bag sizes or time worked, that cannot measure the territory’s crop loss. It does convey one worker’s experience of a harvest made unsafe.58
The injury totals remain unsettled. Reuters reported at least two injured near Abu Falah on October 17; the BBC’s October 17 account put the village figure at around a dozen. NPR, citing the Palestinian Red Crescent Society on October 16, reported 20 injured in two dozen attacks across Friday’s wider violence. PBS separately reported more than a dozen injured across at least eight villages. These lower bounds, approximations and wider totals cannot be added or reconciled without a patient-by-patient breakdown.46119
The Foreign Press Association says repeated appeals to confront attacks on journalists and civilians have been ignored. It urged Netanyahu to stop minimizing the violence as the work of a few troubled youths, and called on the army to protect civilians and authorities to prosecute perpetrators. Those demands reach beyond the treatment of one American reporter to the safety of everyone trying to work in the fields.5221
No published inquiry-completion date or charging deadline has been established. The next meaningful development is not another condemnation, but evidence that investigators have identified the people who beat Levine and explained the conduct of the forces deployed around them.

Ten detentions after West Bank attacks, but Levine’s case remains unresolved
Як в ефірі
- On October 16, we reported Heidi Levine’s beating. She’s now had surgery. Her family describes spinal fractures and a nearly severed finger. Two days after the attack, police haven't announced arrests.
- What have investigators done to identify her attackers and explain the soldiers’ response?
- Levine was attacked near Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, while covering Palestinian olive harvesters. She initially received hospital care in Ramallah. Her later treatment was at Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, Israel.
- Beilinson classified Levine’s condition as moderate, reported limb injuries and confirmed surgery by October 17. Her daughter, Ashley Milner, described a broken rib, multiple broken vertebrae and lacerations. She said surgeons operated on a finger nearly detached from Levine’s hand.
- The hospital’s announcement didn’t give an exact operation time. Levine was still receiving treatment there on October 18. Her son expects weeks of recovery, but that’s a family expectation. The hospital hasn't published a recovery timetable.
- A hospital visitor said doctors had identified stab wounds. Later family accounts described possible puncture wounds. The hospital hasn't confirmed a stabbing, and the documented cuts alone don't tell us what caused them.
- Levine wore a helmet and a protective vest marked press. She says attackers pushed her down, struck her with sticks and repeatedly kicked her while she tried to hold onto her cameras and pouch.
- She estimated about fifty kicks and a beating lasting about ten minutes or longer. She believes her protective equipment kept her alive. Palestinian colleagues helped get her out for medical care. Her cameras, phone and bag were taken or damaged.
- Harvesters and activists abandoned their picking as masked settlers approached. Attackers threw rocks, including with slingshots, and olive groves were set alight. Local people tried to push them back. Cars also burned during the wider village violence.
- The size of the attacking group remains unsettled. Levine described at least fifty masked men on a hill. Other witnesses estimated about eighty people. Our earlier report described roughly a dozen charging into the fields. Those estimates haven't been reconciled.
- Benjamin Netanyahu’s office condemned violence but questioned who started it. It claimed about two hundred Arabs and left-wing activists confronted around forty Israeli youths. It also suggested the person who knocked Levine down immediately helped her up.
- Levine called that suggestion “such a lie and the biggest insult.” Her account of being beaten, her visible press identification and her hospital treatment leave individual responsibility and the wider sequence for investigators to resolve.
- Her executive editor, Matt Murray, directly challenged the prime minister’s office. He said Levine was clearly marked as press and clearly beaten, and demanded a thorough investigation and accountability. He rejected the suggestion that the beating itself was unclear.
- Levine says soldiers watched her beating without protecting her. A military spokesperson’s initial review said troops were dispersing a violent crowd and hadn't witnessed her assault. That review remains in direct conflict with her account.
- Levine says soldiers fired tear gas that dispersed Palestinians and journalists, leaving her isolated. She asked, “Fifteen people are beating a woman. Why didn't they help me?” Other witnesses also allege soldiers failed to intervene.
- The military says soldiers and Border Police were dispatched after a violent confrontation was reported and used riot-dispersal measures. It acknowledged a female journalist was injured and promised to examine the circumstances. Police and forensic investigators were to collect evidence and testimony under military protection.
- The military also described firing at another location. It says soldiers fired warning shots, then toward a suspect running at them with a sharp object. That statement places the shooting away from the precise point of Levine’s beating.
- The military strongly condemned violence against civilians and promised cooperation with other authorities. Its announced investigations haven't produced published findings about who beat Levine or what soldiers saw and did during her assault.
- Ambassador Mike Huckabee demanded an investigation, arrests and prosecution to the fullest extent of the law. He called the assault a “despicable act of terror carried out by masked cowards” and said the attackers should spend years in prison.
- The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem also called for investigations, arrests and convictions. These demands sharpen the American response since our October 16 report. Huckabee made his statement on October 17; its circulation the following day didn't mark another enforcement action.
- Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States had repeatedly asked Israel to crack down on West Bank violence. He called the images disturbing, acknowledged he lacked the full details and said officials had requested an embassy assessment.
- Rubio said he expected that assessment later that day or the next. No resulting action had been publicly announced by October 18. He also defended the earlier lifting of sanctions against settlers, saying that didn't mean President Trump supported the violence.
- The Foreign Press Association says repeated appeals to stop attacks on journalists and civilians have been ignored. It urged Netanyahu to stop minimizing the violence as the work of a few troubled youths, and called on the army to protect civilians and authorities to prosecute perpetrators.
- That concern predates Levine’s beating. AFP photographer Jaafar Ashtiyeh was hospitalized after an attack near Aqraba on October 6.
- Village-level injury counts range from at least two to around twelve. Those figures haven't been reconciled patient by patient. The earlier local count included four Palestinian-Americans among twelve injured Palestinians. The four were already included in that count.
- Across Friday’s wider attacks, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society counted twenty injured in two dozen attacks. Health officials separately described more than a dozen injured across at least eight villages. Those overlapping accounts can't be added to produce a larger total.
- One injured Palestinian-American, Majdi, described being attacked alongside his mother with guns, rocks and other weapons, and struck on his head and neck. His exact place in the competing injury totals remains unclear.
- The UN’s seasonal account compares about two hundred harvest-linked attacks with 185 throughout the 2025 harvest. It describes one Palestinian killed, over 120 injured and over 2,500 trees or saplings damaged. Its precise reporting cutoff hasn't been clarified.
- Some accounts place nearly two hundred attacks in a fortnight; others describe the harvest so far. These are cumulative figures, rather than two hundred new attacks since our last report. Palestinian officials’ separate claim of at least four deaths also covers wider violence, with a different counting period.
- The rights group Yesh Din had already reported at least 170 settler attacks since September 27. Broader figures that also count soldiers’ actions use overlapping periods and different definitions. They don't provide a verified measure of an increase since our previous broadcast.
- One Palestinian picker said collection had fallen from sixty to seventy bags previously to three or four now. That's one worker’s experience. Without matching the time worked or bag sizes, it can't measure the whole territory’s crop loss.
- Access restrictions add another barrier. Previously reported orders required military approval to enter about 8,800 hectares of agricultural land, described as thirty percent more than the previous year. That acreage covers wider access restrictions, rather than land burned or seized at Abu Falah.
- Levine’s surgery and continued hospital treatment now give a clearer picture of the harm. Investigators still have to identify individual attackers and resolve the conflicting accounts of the soldiers’ response. Police and the military haven't published a completion date for their investigations.
- By October 18, no charges or completed investigative findings had been announced. Police still hadn't announced an arrest.

- 🇺🇸 “Lifting sanctions doesn’t mean he likes what he is seeing now.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Saturday the US is "very disturbed" by video of Israeli settlers beating Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine, but offered no consequences beyond asking Israel to act. On Jan. 20, 2025, his first day back in office, President Trump revoked Biden’s executive order authorizing sanctions against Israeli settlers and groups involved in violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. Secretary of State Rubio, when asked about the move today, didn’t express regret, and said that the revocations against violent Israeli settlers didn’t mean he wanted to see violence in the West Bank. Last month, Rubio said "obviously" the US would not join the UK in restricting trade with settlements. The Israeli groups that were removed from sanctions include the following, according to Treasury’s removal list: ➤ Hilltop Youth: Violent settler movement responsible fo...
- Read this figure again and again: an average of 10.9 incidents of settler and soldier violence every day. Today, we are publishing data that illustrate the scale of violence directly linked to the olive harvest: * 21 incidents of violence and physical assaults against olive harvesters * 24 incidents in which settlers or soldiers prevented olive harvesting * 75 incidents of crop theft * 22 incidents of damage to and destruction of olive trees * At least 28 incidents in which soldiers were documented as present In total: 109 incidents of settler and soldier violence across 75 Palestinian communities throughout the West Bank in just 10 days. More than 100 cases of violence against Palestinians documented by Yesh Din before the olive harvest season had even officially begun demonstrate that settler and military violence is not random. Rather, it is part of an Israeli policy with a clear objective: to prevent Palestinians from harvesting their olives, inflict economic harm on Palestinian...
- PM Netanyahu suggests American journalist is lying about being assaulted and kicked by Israeli settlers. He said “footage appears to show Levine knocked down and immediately helped to her feet by the same unidentified individual.” “The investigation must establish the facts, including who initiated the violence.” “We will not allow disputed incidents to be exploited to demonize the hundreds of thousands of law-abiding Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria.” https://t.co/NMSpYswylf
- Surprising nobody, Netanyahu statement on the beating of a Washington Post journalist:
- We appreciate the support we’ve gotten today for our photographer, Heidi Levine, after the brutal and unwarranted attack on her. We reiterate the call for action from the government. Press freedoms are a cornerstone for democracies.
- Email from executive editor Matt Murray to WaPo staff this morning responding to the incident
- To be clear: Some facts are neither in dispute nor unclear. Our photographer was clearly marked as Press. She was clearly beaten. These are not partisan or risible statements, but indisputable. We urge a thorough investigation and accountability.

- Infuriating. Heidi Levine is one of the bravest and hardest working journalists I’ve ever worked with:
- And also, listen to the full experience of the washington post journalist, and watch how her description matches up precisely with what the video captured.

- A Morning of Severe Violence Across the West Bank During the Olive Harvest. Yesh Din new data: 486 incidents of settler and soldier violence over 18 days, September 27- October 14, including 234 directly related to the olive harvest. Soldiers were documented as present in at least 62 incidents (26.5% of all incidents of violence directly related to the olive harvest). Video from the village of Turmusaya this morning shows one of the injured Palestinian farmers, a vehicle set on fire, and soldiers at the scene firing crowd-control weapons at Palestinian farmers. Footage credit: Turmusaya Municipality / Yesh Din
- Over the past two weeks (September 27 - October 10), Yesh Din collected documentation and reports of 377 incidents of settler and soldier violence against Palestinians. An average of approximately 27 incidents of violence per day, occurring in 162 Palestinian communities across the West Bank. Of these incidents, 174 were directly related to the olive harvest, and soldiers were present in 25% of them. The lack of law enforcement against violent settlers and soldiers who attack Palestinian olive harvesters, damage olive trees, and steal the harvest indicates that the obstruction of the olive harvest is part of a broader, systematic Israeli policy aimed at inflicting economic and cultural harm on Palestinians and displacing them from their land.

- The Prime Minister’s Office: The facts surrounding the confrontation near Abu Falah, during which Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was allegedly assaulted, remain unclear and are under investigation. Israel unequivocally condemns violence against anyone—Jews, Arabs, Christians or journalists. Those responsible will be held accountable. But serious questions remain. Reports indicate some 200 Arabs and far-left activists confronted approximately 40 Israeli youths. Footage shows masked individuals on both sides hurling objects, amid reports of fireworks fired at Jewish youths. Other footage appears to show Levine knocked down and immediately helped to her feet by the same unidentified individual. The investigation must establish the facts, including who initiated the violence. We will not allow disputed incidents to be exploited to demonize the hundreds of thousands of law-abiding Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria. The facts must determine the conclusions. Not the h...
- NETANYAHU’S “DELINQUENT YOUTH” JUST BEAT A WASHINGTON POST JOURNALIST Remember Netanyahu’s performance at the UN General Assembly? He dismissed the perpetrators of settler violence as “a handful of delinquent youths,” reportedly numbering around 150. Today, in Abu Falah, those supposedly delinquent youths attacked Palestinian olive harvesters and brutally beat Heidi Levine, a veteran photojournalist working for The Washington Post. They kicked her while she was down and stole her equipment. She was hospitalized. So much for Netanyahu’s fairy tale. These are not merely a few undisciplined teenagers getting into trouble. This is a system of settler violence operating in occupied Palestinian territory, where Palestinian farmers are attacked, olive trees are burned, land is seized, and entire communities are driven from their homes. And the ultimate obscenity? The violence unfolds in the presence of Israeli occupation forces, while Palestinians and journalists bear the con...
- IDF: VIOLENT CONFRONTATION NEAR KHIRBET ABU FALAH DISPERSED, JOURNALIST INJURED IDF and Border Police forces were dispatched Friday to the area near Khirbet Abu Falah following reports of a violent confrontation. According to the IDF, foreign media personnel were present and a female journalist was injured during the incident. The circumstances surrounding her injury are being examined. At a separate location, IDF soldiers fired warning shots before opening fire toward a suspect who allegedly ran at them carrying a sharp object and posed an immediate threat. The confrontation was dispersed. Police and forensic investigators from the Judea and Samaria District are expected to enter the area under IDF protection to collect evidence and testimony. The IDF condemned the violence, calling attacks on innocent civilians “grave and unacceptable,” and said it will work with relevant authorities to eradicate the phenomenon.
- Earlier today, IDF and Israel Border Police forces were dispatched to an area adjacent to Khirbet Abu Falah, following a report of a violent confrontation. Foreign media personnel were present at the scene and a female journalist was injured during the confrontation. All details of the incident will be examined. Upon arriving to the scene, the forces acted to disperse the confrontation using riot dispersal means. At another location where the confrontation took place, IDF soldiers initially fired warning shots into the air and then fired toward a suspect who ran toward them, carrying a sharp object and posed a threat to them. The confrontation was dispersed. Israeli Police forces and forensic investigators from the Judea and Samaria District will enter the area with IDF security to collect findings and evidence, as well as take testimonies. - 📷 Journalist injured near Khirbet Abu Falah: In a separate incident the previous day, IDF and Border Police forces responded to a violent confrontation near Khirbet Abu Falah, where foreign media personnel were present and a female journalist was injured. The IDF said arriving forces used riot-dispersal measures. At another location during the confrontation, soldiers fired warning shots into the air and then toward a suspect who, according to the military, ran toward them carrying a sharp object and posed a threat. The confrontation was dispersed. Police and forensic investigators were to enter under IDF protection to collect evidence and testimony. The military said all circumstances would be examined. The IDF condemned violence against innocent civilians as grave and unacceptable, saying attempts to provoke friction between populations undermine security. It pledged a coordinated response with the relevant authorities. 🌐 https://t.co/tactiIBqoI
- You can tell Jewish Israelis were the aggressors. If Palestinians did anything like this, airstrikes would already be happening. Because the attackers are Jewish, a "multi-agency response" is needed.
- CAN YOU STOP LYING FOR A SINGLE FUCKING SECOND?? The violence of your “juvenile delinquents” is sickening to us all, and your occupation forces protect these domestic terrorists.
