Walking, eating and celebrating Mass are encouraging signs after removal of a lung lobe. They do not yet establish the cancer’s stage—or whether surgery was enough.
Тепер встановлено
- Adenocarcinoma is confirmed, the right lower lung lobe has been removed, and the October 14 recovery update described an expected postoperative course.
Pope Leo XIV is walking around his hospital room, doing breathing exercises and eating regular meals after losing the lower lobe of his right lung. Those are encouraging steps for a 71-year-old recovering from major surgery. They do not yet answer the question that now hangs over his recovery: was the operation enough to treat his cancer?5
The Vatican has confirmed pulmonary adenocarcinoma, a type of non-small-cell lung cancer. Surgeons removed the right lower lobe at Rome’s Agostino Gemelli University Hospital on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. The operation was described as successful and without complications, but the cancer’s stage, possible spread and need for further treatment remain unestablished.17412
When HeyDay News reported his hospital admission on October 13, the operation’s completion and the nodule’s nature were still unconfirmed at our reporting cutoff. Both uncertainties have now been resolved: surgery took place, and examination of tissue during the operation confirmed cancer. The earlier account of an undiagnosed nodule has been superseded—not by a complete prognosis, but by a diagnosis and the first recovery updates.
What the operation actually established
The clearest account comes from the October 13 Holy See medical statement, issued under the names of Dr Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora. Carbone directs the Vatican City State Governorate’s health department and is identified in reporting as the papal physician; Margaritora heads the thoracic-surgery medical team.174182196
To ensure a radical procedure, the lower lobe of the right lung was removed using a video-assisted technique. The intraoperative histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, as suspected by the pre-operative tests.
This describes removal of one lobe, not the whole right lung. It also establishes that tests before surgery had already raised suspicion of cancer. What it does not supply is a final postoperative pathology report showing microscopic margins, lymph-node findings or a formal stage. The stated intention to achieve a radical removal is a surgical purpose, not proof that every cancer cell was eliminated.174
Two timing distinctions matter. CTV News’s October 14 account placed surgery that day, while Scripps News’s later October 14 report placed it on Tuesday, October 13. The dated Holy See release establishes October 13 as the operation date. Separately, The Hill described roughly three hours of surgery in its October 14 report; the Associated Press’s later account distinguished about 90 minutes of surgery from approximately three hours in the operating room. The Vatican accounts support that distinction; the additional time has not been publicly broken down in the available reporting.42174117176
The more consequential difference concerns complete removal. Reuters reported on October 14 that information about complete tumor removal and lymph-node spread was not available. A later BBC News report that morning described the cancerous growth as fully removed, while still saying further test results were awaited. That later wording does not supply the missing pathological findings. The secure conclusion is that the lobe containing the cancerous nodule was removed—not that Leo has been declared cancer-free.1915174
Before surgery, Leo had described the nodule as localized and detected very early, announcing on October 11 that doctors had advised removal. That reassurance is important history, but it is not a formal cancer stage. The tumor’s dimensions have not been disclosed, and the available reporting does not establish clear microscopic margins, absence of disease elsewhere or whether lymph nodes are involved.2010
Recovery has more than one clock
Leo awoke normally after surgery and returned to his room following observation. By October 14, scheduled blood tests and a chest X-ray showed findings within the expected postoperative range. He completed respiratory physiotherapy, began walking in his room and ate breakfast and lunch. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni described his spirits as very good. That afternoon, he concelebrated Mass in a specially prepared room on Gemelli’s tenth floor.26182
These are concrete signs of recovery from the operation. They are not measurements of cancer spread. A reassuring postoperative X-ray and blood tests cannot substitute for the tissue assessment needed to guide the next treatment decision. NBC medical contributor Dr Natalie Azar explained that further evaluation, including lymph-node assessment and staging, would help determine whether surgery was sufficient.5
No follow-up treatment regimen has been announced. Scripps and CTV reported on October 14 that doctors were not currently discussing chemotherapy or other therapies. That is not a decision that additional treatment will never be needed. Medical experts cited by Reuters described surgery as potentially curative if cancer was caught early, completely removed and had not reached lymph nodes. Those conditions have not been demonstrated for Leo.238
The expected hospital stay is about one week, and public engagements and appointments are canceled through October 20. Neither is a firm discharge date or a promise of a full public workload on October 21. ABC News Australia’s October 14 interview suggested discharge in a couple of days, a shorter expectation than the week-long estimate carried by FRANCE 24. No confirmed discharge appointment settles those expectations.179
General recovery estimates also describe different endpoints. Azar offered roughly six to eight weeks for significant improvement and four to six months to regain the presurgical baseline. These were general milestones, not Leo’s individual prognosis. They should neither be compressed into a week of hospital care nor treated as evidence that he has suffered a setback.5
His public absence does not mean papal government has stopped. NBC reported that he was working from his hospital room. Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle was identified as the substitute celebrant for an October 14 Mass in St. Peter’s Square; the evidence does not establish that he conducted a general audience in Leo’s place. The papal audiences were canceled. A substitute Mass is not a transfer of papal authority.5184187
A journey still awaiting medical answers
The practical pressure is a South American journey scheduled for November 6–17, to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, in that order. The official programme starts with a 07:00 local-time departure from Rome/Fiumicino for Montevideo on November 6, followed by welcome engagements that evening. Departure would fall 24 days after surgery. That calendar interval does not establish fitness to fly or complete the programme.139
This is no light return to public life. The National Catholic Reporter’s September 22 headline projected about 19,000 miles on 14 flights. NBC also reported nearly 40 speeches, nearly 50 events and a Cusco engagement described as about two miles above sea level. Those are reported itinerary estimates: the complete programme was not available for an independent recount of the speeches and events or verification of the cited altitude. Even without treating those totals as exact, repeated flights and a multinational public schedule represent a substantial workload.1903556
The travel assessment has become more hopeful, but not final. AP’s October 14 report said whether Leo could travel remained unknown. Scripps reported later that day that the Vatican considered the journey possible on the information then available to doctors. Leo’s wish to go remains unchanged; no final medical clearance, Vatican postponement or cancellation has been established. A journey staying on the calendar is not the same as a patient being cleared to undertake it.72186

- Final stage, lymph-node involvement, microscopic margins, additional treatment, discharge timing and fitness for the November itinerary remain unresolved.

- Watch for the completed cancer assessment and individual medical advice, alongside schedule updates as the October 20 cancellation window ends.
For now, walking, eating and celebrating Mass are reassuring achievements in their own right. The next cancer findings will answer a different question: whether this successful operation was the whole treatment or its first part.

Pope Leo leaves hospital, but the cancer questions remain
Як в ефірі
- On October 13 we reported Leo awaiting surgery. The operation is complete, and doctors have confirmed lung cancer. His public engagements are canceled through October 20, and a major South American journey is approaching.
- Will surgery be enough, and can he recover in time to make that journey?
- Surgeons removed the lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. Leo is 71. The diagnosis is pulmonary adenocarcinoma, a type of non-small-cell lung cancer. The Vatican says the operation went as planned, without complications.
- Tests before surgery had already raised suspicion of cancer. Doctors confirmed it by examining tissue during the operation. They used a video-assisted technique to remove the lobe containing the nodule. Their stated aim was a thorough removal of the affected tissue.
- The statement carries the names of papal physician Luigi Carbone and thoracic-surgery team leader Stefano Margaritora. The procedure removed one section of the right lung. Leo retains the rest of that lung.
- The surgery took place on Tuesday, October 13. An October 14 date also circulated, but the medical statement explicitly places the operation the previous day. The recovery updates followed on October 14.
- The operation itself lasted about 90 minutes. Leo spent about three hours in the operating room altogether. Those figures measure different intervals. The longer figure has sometimes been described as the surgical duration, but the medical updates separate the two.
- Leo began walking in his room the following day. He also completed respiratory physiotherapy, exercises that support breathing after surgery, and resumed his regular diet. Blood tests and a chest X-ray showed findings within the expected range after this operation.
- He had awakened normally, returned to his room and eaten dinner after surgery. The Vatican described a peaceful night, followed by breakfast and lunch. Spokesman Matteo Bruni said his spirits were very good. That afternoon, Leo concelebrated Mass in a specially prepared room on Gemelli’s tenth floor.
- Leo’s immediate recovery is proceeding as expected. His cancer assessment still has to determine the stage and whether he needs more treatment. Walking, eating and reassuring postoperative tests tell doctors about recovery from surgery. The tissue findings will guide the next cancer decisions.
- Descriptions of complete removal have differed. The lower lobe containing the cancerous nodule was removed. Whether microscopic cancer remains, or disease has reached lymph nodes or elsewhere, still needs assessment. Those findings will help determine whether surgery was sufficient.
- Before the operation, Leo had called the nodule localized and detected very early. He announced on October 11 that doctors had advised removal. His doctors still have to determine a formal cancer stage. Examination of the removed tissue and further tests can take days.
- Surgery can sometimes be sufficient when cancer is early, completely removed and hasn’t reached lymph nodes. Other findings can lead to additional treatment. Doctors haven’t announced a follow-up regimen for Leo. The Vatican’s description that therapies weren’t currently being discussed leaves that decision open.
- The Vatican expects about a week in hospital. That’s an estimate, with no firm discharge date. Some earlier expectations suggested only a couple of days. Leaving hospital, taking on selected work and regaining full physical capacity are separate milestones.
- General medical estimates include six to eight weeks for significant improvement, and four to six months to regain the presurgical baseline. Those describe different recovery endpoints. They’re general estimates, and Leo’s treating team hasn’t given him that individual timetable.
- Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle celebrated Mass in St. Peter’s Square in Leo’s place on October 14. The Pope’s audiences were canceled. Leo has also been working from his hospital room and making papal decisions while his public appearances are suspended.
- Catholics have prayed and sent well wishes in St. Peter’s Square and in Peru, where Leo served as a missionary and bishop. Canadian Catholic communities have also rallied in support. About 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide are following his recovery.
- Bishop Thomas Dowd says Canadian bishops are preparing for their regular pilgrimage to Rome and a meeting with Leo in January 2027. The nearer scheduling pressure is the Pope’s South American journey, which is due to begin on November 6.
- November 6 falls 24 days after the operation. Public engagements are canceled through October 20, without a promised return to a full workload the next day. The journey remains scheduled for November 6 through November 17, subject to Leo’s recovery.
- The official programme takes him to Uruguay, then Argentina, then Peru. It begins with a flight from Rome to Montevideo and welcome engagements that evening. Uruguay is scheduled for November 6 through November 8, before the journey continues.
- The tour is commonly called an eleven-day journey. Its start and end dates are eleven days apart, while the schedule touches twelve calendar dates. The projected journey covers about 19,000 miles on 14 flights.
- The planned workload reportedly approaches forty speeches and fifty events, including a Cusco engagement about two miles above sea level. Repeated flights and a demanding public programme make the travel decision larger than whether Leo can leave hospital.
- The Vatican says the journey could proceed on the information then available to doctors, and Leo still wants to go. Peru’s president has allowed for dates to change. The Vatican hasn’t announced a postponement or cancellation, or final medical clearance. Further tissue findings and staging will guide whether Leo needs another treatment, while his recovery will determine how much of the planned workload he can safely undertake.
