Police identified six-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer as the people killed. Ten others were injured; toxicology and vehicle findings remain pending.
The Wichita soccer-field investigation has moved beyond the emergency response, but not yet to an explanation. The woman driving the pickup that killed a child and an adult at Stryker Sports Complex on October 17 has been released from custody without charges while police await toxicology results and a mechanical examination of the truck. Investigators have established that it moved from a parking space onto an occupied field; they have not established why.3741
When HeyDay News reported the deaths on October 17, the victims’ names, the number and conditions of surviving patients, and the driver’s custody status remained unestablished in our account. Sunday’s police update fills those gaps. The death toll has not increased: the changes are a clearer patient accounting, identification of the two people killed and confirmation that the driver was questioned and subsequently released.
The crash happened during youth soccer at the northeast Wichita complex, near North Greenwich Road and East 29th Street. Sedgwick County 911 began receiving multiple calls around 3:25 p.m. Saturday, according to the police briefing reported by KWCH. That is an approximate emergency-call time, not a separately established moment of impact. The later police-update times in our first report were not the time the truck entered the field.710
Police’s preliminary investigation found that the pickup had been parked near the fields before it drove onto one and struck children and adults. The driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, remained at the scene and cooperated. Two of her children were inside the truck and were interviewed; another was playing soccer on a different field at the complex. Police said she had a valid driver’s license and no outstanding warrants. None of those circumstances explains the truck’s movement.4117
Why the hospital totals differ
The distinction between injuries and hospital transports resolves the apparent change from 11 injured in early accounts to 10 in the Sunday update. Ten people were hospitalized with crash injuries. An additional patient, a 61-year-old woman, experienced medical complications unrelated to traumatic injuries and was also taken to a hospital. That makes 11 transports, with the two people who died at the scene counted separately. It does not mean an injured person disappeared from the accounting or recovered between reports.41
The Guardian’s early October 18 account reported 11 injured and the driver in custody. ABC News’s October 18 evening broadcast, published October 19 in UTC, reported 10 injured and her release without charges. Those are successive stages of the same investigation, not competing current accounts. The Guardian subsequently updated its article to report the release and distinguish the 10 injured people from the additional medical patient.72
The injured children were a five-year-old girl, a five-year-old boy, two eight-year-old boys and a nine-year-old girl. The five injured adults were aged 28, 32, 59, 65 and 68. Patients were taken to Ascension Via Christi and Wesley Medical Center. KWCH and The Guardian agree on those adult ages but differ on whether the patients aged 59 and 65 were men or women; that detail remains unresolved.367
The descriptions of injury severity also require care. The initial emergency briefing described a range from bruises to extremely severe injuries, preliminarily believed not life-threatening. Sunday’s police update described the injured patients as noncritical, while KWCH’s separate report on the driver’s release called their injuries serious. Those terms do not mean minor injuries. No patient-by-patient recovery update or discharge total has been established.13637
Release leaves the cause unresolved
Police took the driver into custody for questioning after the crash. Investigators conducted more than 30 witness interviews and consulted the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office before releasing her. The police statement reproduced by KWCH said she was “subsequently released pending the results of toxicology testing and a mechanical examination of the vehicle.” No charges had been filed in that update.3637
Release is not an exoneration or a finding that the crash was accidental. Equally, ordering toxicology testing is not evidence of intoxication, and examining the pickup does not establish a mechanical failure. The outstanding examinations may help explain what happened; their existence alone does not supply an answer. Police have not determined whether the driver acted intentionally.371
The new parking-space-to-field sequence answers part of the question left open in our first report about the vehicle’s movements. It does not independently verify the earlier witness estimate, reported by KWCH, that the black pickup stopped 100–200 yards farther along the fields. That distance remains a witness description, not a measured reconstruction or evidence of speed. The earlier police assessment that there was no further ongoing threat likewise did not close the investigation.4110
Investigators are still seeking photographs and video, including material witnesses might consider unimportant. “Regardless of how significant you believe your footage may be, we encourage you to submit it. Even the smallest detail could assist investigators,” police said in the request reported by KWCH. The appeal matters because the known starting point—a parked truck—and the outcome—a field of children and adults struck—still lack an established explanation connecting them.10
A closure beyond the soccer field
All events at Stryker Sports Complex were cancelled until further notice. The Kansas State High School Activities Association also suspended the third-place and championship flag football games scheduled there for Saturday. It planned to provide rescheduling details Monday, October 19; replacement fixtures have not been established in the available updates.417
Police Chief Joe Sullivan put the loss plainly in Sunday’s statement: “What should have been a day of children playing soccer and families spending time together ended in tragedy.” He said investigators would continue working to understand exactly what happened.41
Local mental health agencies encouraged affected families, witnesses and first responders to seek support through Sedgwick County COMCARE. Anyone needing emotional support can also call or text 988 to reach a trained crisis counselor. For the families of Cole Adrian and Nicholas Schafer, and for the five injured children and five injured adults, the emergency has consequences far beyond the field’s closure. The next investigative findings must explain the truck’s movement and inform whether charges follow; the driver’s release does neither by itself.4137

Wichita reopens Stryker complex with permanent safeguards still pending
Як в ефірі
- Police released the driver whose pickup killed a child and an adult at a soccer game. On October 17, we reported those deaths and additional hospitalizations. Police now identify both victims and count ten injured survivors, including five children. Investigators still have to explain why the truck entered the field and whether charges will follow.
- Six-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer died at the scene. Both were from McPherson, Kansas, and they weren't related. The death toll remains two. Police have now filled in the surviving patients' numbers and the driver's custody status.
- Stryker Sports Complex sits in northeast Wichita, near North Greenwich Road and East 29th Street. The victims came from McPherson. The 34-year-old woman driving the pickup came from Garden City. Families were at the complex for youth soccer.
- Police say the pickup had been parked in a space near the fields before it drove onto a field and struck children and adults. Sedgwick County 911 began receiving calls around 3:25 Saturday afternoon. That gives the emergency-response timeline; police haven't pinpointed the exact moment of impact.
- Ten people suffered injuries in the crash. Eleven people went to hospitals because a 61-year-old woman also needed care for a separate medical problem. That accounts for the different totals. The two people who died at the scene are counted separately.
- Five of the injured were children. They included a five-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy. Two eight-year-old boys and a nine-year-old girl were also hurt. The detailed patient accounting separates those crash injuries from the additional woman's medical complications. It explains why the injury total is now ten.
- The five injured adults were 28, 32, 59, 65 and 68 years old. The injured patients went to Ascension Via Christi and Wesley Medical Center. Across the ten injured survivors, ages ranged from five to 68.
- Some injuries were severe. Emergency officials initially described a range from bruises to extremely severe injuries, while saying they believed the injuries weren't life-threatening. Police's Sunday update described the patients as noncritical. Those descriptions still include people who suffered serious injuries. Police haven't given individual recovery updates.
- Investigators conducted more than 30 witness interviews and consulted the Sedgwick County district attorney's office before releasing the driver. Police say they're waiting for toxicology results and a mechanical examination of the pickup. Any decision about charges will follow the continuing investigation.
- The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. Two of her children were inside the pickup, and investigators interviewed both. Another of her children was playing soccer on a different field at the complex. Police say she had a valid driver's license and no outstanding warrants.
- Police took the woman into custody for questioning after the crash and later released her without charges. Earlier descriptions of her remaining in custody have been overtaken by that release. The updated ten-injury total also separates out the additional medical patient.
- All events at Stryker were cancelled until further notice. The Kansas State High School Activities Association suspended its third-place and championship flag football games scheduled there for Saturday. It planned to give rescheduling details Monday, October 19. The closure extends the disruption beyond the soccer game where people were struck.
- Police are seeking photographs and video, including footage people might consider insignificant. They know the truck moved from a parking space onto an occupied field. They still haven't explained why it moved, or determined whether the driver acted intentionally.
- Families, witnesses and first responders can get mental health support through Sedgwick County COMCARE. Anyone needing emotional support can also call or text 988 to reach a trained crisis counselor. Investigators are still awaiting the toxicology results and the truck's mechanical examination.
