Four children are reported dead and search and rescue is complete. But the competing death counts—and the fate of everyone previously unaccounted for—remain unresolved.
Four children are now reported dead in the Russian bombing of homes in Zaporizhzhia on October 10, 2026. Among the publicly identified victims were a first-grader and an eighth-grader. The search through the wreckage has ended, but the accounting remains unfinished: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gives a total of 23 people killed, while a separate emergency-service assessment gives 20. Both include four children.2140158
NPR’s October 12 report attributes the 23-person toll to Zelenskyy and reports Ivan Fedorov’s latest medical snapshot: more than 30 people wounded, eight of them still hospitalized. These are official-reported figures, not a reconciled final tally. The eight hospital patients are part of the wounded total, not additional casualties, and the account supplies no individual prognosis.2
In our October 10 broadcast, we reported 20 people killed, including three children, and 18 injured, including three children, while rescuers were still working. The new reporting changes that account in three clear respects: four children are now reported dead, the latest reported injury count exceeds 30, and search and rescue is complete. The higher death count of 23 requires a qualification that those developments do not: it remains unreconciled with the separate count of 20.562140
One attack, two death counts
Reuters via Yahoo’s October 11 account carried an emergency-service figure of at least 20 dead, including four children, alongside a separate figure of 23 attributed to Zelenskyy. NPR reported Zelenskyy’s 23 on October 12. Crucially, Ukrinform’s October 12 report announcing the completed search still gave 20 deaths, including four children, citing the State Emergency Service. This is not simply an older, lower estimate replaced by a newer, higher one.42140
Further reporting makes it less persuasive that the two totals concern different attacks. Ukrainska Pravda’s October 11 report explicitly connects 23 deaths to the October 10 bombing and names regional emergency-service spokesperson Yuliia Barysheva among its sources. The New Voice of Ukraine also links 23 to that attack and Barysheva. The available accounts nevertheless do not explain the three-person difference.142145
A higher count published earlier and a lower count published later cannot be turned into a neat chronological increase without knowing when the underlying assessments were compiled. Nor is there verified support for the tempting explanation that 20 bodies were recovered at the building and three other victims died in hospital. The reports appear to concern the same attack; their counting difference remains unexplained.142140
Other lower figures belong to the earlier uncertainty. BBC News reports published October 10 and October 11 repeated an estimate of at least 12 people, including at least three children, “thought to have been killed.” Another BBC account on October 10 gave at least 15 deaths. Those are superseded estimates, not competing present-day totals. A later publication date does not make a repeated early assessment more current.1313
The injury counts also resist a single settled answer. The Kyiv Independent’s incident-specific article, published October 10 and updated October 11, assigns 32 injured to this residential bombing. Zabor’s October 11 completed-search reporting gives 34 wounded; Kyiv Post’s completed-search account gives 17 injured. Their counting scopes and updates have not been explained. They cannot be added together or silently substituted for one another.1071709
Fedorov, the source of NPR’s more-than-30 and eight-hospitalized figures, is not the current regional governor. He left the regional administration leadership in early September and now heads Ukraine’s State Agency for Restoration and co-chairs the regional Defense Council. That corrects an earlier identification error; it does not resolve the casualty discrepancies.692
The homes beneath the totals
The attack struck at approximately 04:48 Kyiv time, or 01:48 UTC, on October 10. Five Russian guided glide bombs hit residential areas in the Shevchenkivskyi and Voznesenivskyi districts. Descriptions of a “single strike” should be read as describing the attack, not as establishing that one bomb produced its entire toll. A five-story apartment block was hit and upper floors collapsed.14137104
The ground floor was hit, and the floors above just collapsed.
Rescuers pulled a married couple alive from beneath the apartment rubble; their daughter died. Earlier reporting named the parents as Yana and Anton. BBC correspondent Joe Inwood’s subsequent account rendered the mother’s name as Jana and the daughter’s as Liisa. The names and spelling differences have not been independently confirmed, but the account must not be read as saying both parents died: reporting establishes that the couple were rescued.1563
Two children have stronger public identification. Hromadske and Ukrainska Pravda Life, citing Zaporizhzhia’s education department, identify Yelyzaveta Sorochyshyna as a first-grader and Anna Mur-Zak as an eighth-grader killed in the bombing. Yelyzaveta’s surname also appears as Skorochyshyna; that difference remains unresolved.158159
Community-based reporting identifies another victim, eleventh-grader Polina Foshchan, as having died with her mother, Nataliia Foshchan, and grandmother, Vira Sihailova. MIG’s account describes three generations of women killed in one family. Those relationships are explicitly reported, but have not been independently confirmed through an original school, city or family statement.160163
These identifications are not an exhaustive list of the four children reported dead. Nor do they conclusively identify the six-year-old girl described in an October 10 AAP account as either the rescued couple’s daughter or one of the named pupils. Grief does not make separate, incomplete accounts safe to join into a single family history.155158160
The search ended, questions remain
ABC News Australia reported on October 11 that another woman had been pulled alive from the rubble. Her cousin said her grandmother was still missing. That was the grandmother’s status at the report’s cutoff, not a verified current missing-person entry. No later outcome has been established, and there is no evidence identifying her as Vira Sihailova or another named victim.12
The wider whereabouts checks remain similarly incomplete. An interim October 10 assessment listed 11 people who had not been in contact since morning. Earlier checks concerned 12 people who might have been at the scene, and an estimate of up to 14 potentially trapped. Those provisional groups may overlap with one another and with the eventual casualties. No person-by-person reconciliation establishes how every case was resolved or that the missing-person count reached zero.15137
The earlier damage assessment counted at least 26 residential buildings—23 apartment blocks and three private houses—with three buildings significantly damaged. These are building counts, not totals of apartments, displaced households or residents needing rehousing. No final structural-safety inventory, repair bill or displacement total has been established.1416
Mezha’s completed-search account describes a three-story building, whereas the badly damaged block has repeatedly been described as five stories. The available reporting does not establish whether that reflects an error or another affected structure. It is no basis for replacing the corroborated five-story description or assuming every damaged building had the same height.143141104
Zaporizhzhia declared October 11 a day of mourning. The rescue operation is over; the consequences are not. Eight wounded people remained hospitalized in the latest reported snapshot, and the safety of damaged homes remains unresolved. For survivors, those are immediate realities beyond the disagreement between 20 and 23.982

Four children killed in Zaporizhzhia bombing as search ends and toll remains unresolved
Як в ефірі
- On October 10, we reported rescuers still searching Zaporizhzhia’s bombed homes. That search has now ended.
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the Russian bombing killed 23 people, including four children. Emergency-service officials give a separate count of 20, also including four children. Families still need to know whether everyone who disappeared has been accounted for.
- Five Russian guided glide bombs hit residential areas in two districts. The attack struck at about 4:48 in the morning, Kyiv time, on October 10. The bombs hit the Shevchenkivskyi and Voznesenivskyi districts, damaging homes across both areas.
- Zelenskyy gives the death toll as 23. The emergency-service account gives at least 20. Both include four children. The higher figure is being tied to this bombing, but nobody has explained the three-person difference.
- Regional emergency-service spokesperson Yuliia Barysheva also supplied the 23-person figure for the October 10 bombing. That connects the higher count to the same attack. An emergency-service announcement published October 12 still gave 20 deaths when it announced the search was complete.
- The publication dates don't tell us when each count was compiled. So the two figures can't be treated as a settled increase from 20 to 23.
- The early estimate was at least 12 people thought killed, including at least three children. Another early assessment gave at least 15 deaths. The estimate of 12 appeared again the following day, even after the toll had reached 20.
- On October 10, we reported 20 deaths, including three children, and 18 injured, also including three children. Those were figures from a search that was still underway.
- Four children are now reported dead, replacing the three in that earlier account. That change appears in both newer death counts. The latest injury snapshot also exceeds the 18 people we reported wounded while rescuers were still working.
- Ivan Fedorov says more than 30 people were wounded, with eight still hospitalized. Those eight are among the wounded. They're part of the same medical snapshot, published October 12, and their individual conditions haven't been described.
- Fedorov left the regional administration leadership in early September. He now heads Ukraine’s State Agency for Restoration and co-chairs the regional Defense Council. He also said search and rescue had ended. His former regional role has sometimes caused confusion about his current position.
- Separate counts for this bombing give 32 injured, 34 wounded, and 17 injured. Those figures differ from the earlier 18. They can't be added together, and nobody has explained whether they cover different groups of people or different stages of the response.
- A five-story apartment block lost its upper floors after the impact. Acting mayor Regina Kharchenko described the collapse this way. “The ground floor was hit, and the floors above just collapsed.” People were trapped beneath the wreckage of their homes.
- The earlier damage assessment counted at least 26 residential buildings. That included 23 apartment blocks and three private houses. Three buildings sustained significant damage. The total measures damaged buildings, so it doesn't tell us how many households lost their homes.
- A separate account describes a three-story building. It's unclear whether that refers to another affected structure. The badly damaged block has repeatedly been described as five stories.
- Rescuers pulled a married couple alive from beneath the collapsed apartment’s rubble. Their daughter died. The parents have reportedly been named as Yana, also spelled Jana, and Anton, and their daughter as Liisa. The names and spellings haven't been confirmed.
- A six-year-old girl was also described as killed when part of an apartment block collapsed. She hasn't been identified as this couple’s daughter. The daughter’s grandfather, identified as Anatoli, said, “May all Russians die.” He spoke in anger after learning of his granddaughter’s death.
- Zaporizhzhia’s education department identified first-grader Yelyzaveta Sorochyshyna and eighth-grader Anna Mur-Zak among those killed. Yelyzaveta’s surname has also appeared as Skorochyshyna. These public identifications give names to two of the children whose deaths are included in the casualty counts.
- Eleventh-grader Polina Foshchan reportedly died with her mother, Nataliia Foshchan, and grandmother, Vira Sihailova. Community accounts identify three generations of women killed in one family. Those family details haven't been confirmed by an original city or family statement.
- The three schoolgirls' names don't account for all four children reported dead. Their identities also haven't been linked conclusively to the six-year-old girl or the rescued couple’s daughter.
- A woman was pulled alive from beneath the rubble. Her cousin said the woman’s grandmother was still missing in an account published October 11. Nobody has given a later outcome for that grandmother, and she hasn't been identified as any named victim.
- Officials listed 11 people who hadn't been in contact since that morning. Earlier checks concerned 12 people who might have been at the scene, and an estimate of up to 14 potentially trapped. These provisional groups may overlap with each other and the casualties.
- The search has finished, but nobody has published a person-by-person accounting showing whether everyone on those lists was found. That leaves families without a clear answer about the people previously unaccounted for.
- Zaporizhzhia declared October 11 a day of mourning. Eight wounded people remained hospitalized in the latest medical snapshot. For other survivors, the next question concerns their homes. Final structural-safety findings haven't been announced for the damaged residential buildings.

- Today, at President Trump’s direction, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is immediately issuing a temporary general license to allow the supply of Russian diesel to the global market.
- The quantities Trump revealed amount to approximately 4.8 million metric tons of diesel for both U.S. and international markets, which is roughly equivalent to 36 million barrels. The daily usage of distillates in the U.S. is around 3.9 million barrels, meaning the total volume would suffice for about 9 days of national usage if all barrels remained in the U.S. The initial tranche of 300,000 tons is less than one day's supply.
