- Rioters burned cars and a police motorcycle in Bilbao. Seventeen people were arrested, including ten minors, and the city estimates public-property damage at about fifty-five thousand euros. Vehicle owners face separate losses. Investigators still have to determine who directed the violence and who carried it out.
- Police arrested the seventeen on suspicion of public-order offences. The seven adults, aged eighteen to twenty-five, have been released pending court summonses. Another man, aged twenty-two, is being investigated separately. Police are still identifying additional participants.
- The arrested group comprises fourteen men and three women. One of the seven adults is a woman. None had previously been arrested by the Ertzaintza, the Basque regional police. The judicial process will have to determine each person's involvement.
- An early tally counted at least nine arrests. An interim count rose to nineteen, with three others investigated. The final balance revised those figures to seventeen and one, and revised the minors' count from seven to ten.
- The violence broke out on October twenty-sixth, twenty twenty-six. Thousands of students had marched through the city centre at midday. Several thousand people gathered near the University of Deusto later, opposing a planned appearance by far-right activist Vito Quiles. Youth organizations, political groups and anti-fascist organizations had mobilized against his presence.
- Quiles had announced a gathering in front of the university's Bilbao campus for seven that evening. He cancelled it, and the appearance never went ahead. The march preceding the unrest was largely peaceful.
- Police knew about the cancellation well before Quiles announced it publicly. At two that afternoon, he asked the regional police about moving the gathering elsewhere. They told him there was no alternative location. He then withdrew in writing.
- His written withdrawal reached police more than two hours before his public announcement. Quiles announced the cancellation on social media about half an hour before the scheduled start, citing security concerns. Those were separate communications about the same cancelled appearance.
- The university suspended afternoon academic activity and closed the campus as a precaution. That was its own decision, separate from Quiles's withdrawal. Basque universities minister Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias disagreed with the closure, calling it incorrect.
- Several hundred people moved toward nearby Lehendakari Aguirre Avenue after the gathering dispersed, around the scheduled start time. Hooded participants dragged waste containers into the road and set them alight as barricades. They also burned a Bilbao Municipal Police motorcycle.
- The disturbances spread from the Deusto area toward Plaza de Euskadi, near Deusto Bridge, and into the city centre. People threw stones at officers and the Deusto police station. More vehicles and containers burned as the unrest spread.
- Police described a group carrying stones toward the station and setting the motorcycle alight along the way. Flares or fireworks were also thrown. A construction container burned on nearby Francesc Macià Street. The attacks damaged street furniture and commercial premises as well as vehicles.
- Bilbao City Council estimates public-property losses at about fifty-five thousand euros. Its assessment counts thirty-eight burned waste containers and five burned-out cars. The car owners bear those losses separately, so the municipal estimate covers only part of the damage.
- Earlier estimates described fire reaching at least six cars, or roughly half a dozen vehicles burning. The city specifically counted five burned-out cars. Those descriptions cover different degrees or types of damage, and the counts haven't been fully reconciled. The burned police motorcycle is an additional identified vehicle.
- Municipal crews began removing burned cars and containers early on October twenty-seventh. Residents and traders faced damaged vehicles, damaged premises and disrupted streets. There isn't a reliable overall injury count, and the full private-property bill is still unknown.
- The Basque socialist organization EHKS, which includes GKS, says its involvement ended with the earlier mobilizations. It says two afternoon demonstrations ended without incidents in Deusto, and that its objectives had been fulfilled once Quiles didn't come.
- EHKS linked the wider unrest to working-class impoverishment, war, the growth of fascism and the influence of technology and social networks. Those are the organization's proposed explanations. Its statement describes its own role; investigators still have to determine individual responsibility for the attacks.
- Security minister Bingen Zupiria suggested organized Basque groups or outside influences might have shaped the unrest. Basque president Imanol Pradales called the incidents intolerable and unacceptable. Mayor Juan María Aburto called the perpetrators real fascists and expressed solidarity with those affected.
- The Security Department inferred premeditation because the disturbances continued despite the cancellation. Zupiria noted that the young detainees hadn't lived through ETA's violence or the earlier Basque street violence known as kale borroka. He suggested they might be following outside references or instructions, or imitating violent movements elsewhere in Europe.
- Those remain official hypotheses about who influenced the rioting. Quiles alleged that former ETA members were among the protest leaders, but supplied no evidence. Investigators haven't demonstrated an ETA connection or identified who directed the attacks.
- Police unions ErNE and Esan allege that commanders dismantled the preventive deployment too hastily after cancellation. ErNE demanded explanations and accountability from police leadership. The unions argue that cancelling the appearance didn't remove the risk from the crowds already gathered.
- The deployment sequence hasn't been fully explained. Euspel general secretary Julio González condemned the attempt to reach the Deusto station as an escalation aimed at direct confrontation with officers. The union criticism has opened a separate dispute over how police prepared for the unrest.
- All municipal groups except EH Bildu signed a joint declaration condemning the disturbances and chants supporting military ETA. EH Bildu separately expressed its absolute rejection of violent behaviour and solidarity with those affected. Its municipal spokesperson, María del Río Pereda, distinguished the peaceful popular response from the later incidents.
- The People's Party demanded Zupiria's resignation. Its secretary-general, Miguel Tellado, called the perpetrators far-left fascists and criminals, and blamed government failures to anticipate the violence. Socialist Patxi López warned against feeding hatred. The PNV's Maribel Vaquero said provocation couldn't justify more violence.
- Basque Socialist leader Eneko Andueza also said violence could never answer provocation. Condemnation stretched across institutions and parties, but they disagreed about political responsibility and who might benefit from the disturbances.
- Sumar's Jon Hernández said the unrest benefited the right and far right. CCOO leader Unai Sordo called for clarification of who promoted the violent mobilizations. Government spokesperson Elma Saiz condemned the vandalism and said violence had no place in democracy.
- The ELA union likewise warned that reactionary forces would gain politically. Police now have to distinguish those who caused the damage from the much larger number who protested peacefully. The ten arrested minors were due before juvenile prosecutors on October twenty-seventh; the outcome hasn't been made public. The seven released adults await court summonses while the investigation continues.
