  1. A landslide buried a state bus and killed its driver. His conductor suffered serious injuries, and rescuers brought more than 300 stranded road users to safety. When can travellers safely use the damaged mountain road again?
  2. The driver was Janagaraj, 55. Rescuers pulled conductor Kesavan from the bus and took him to Mettupalayam Government Hospital. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation service was travelling from Coonoor toward Coimbatore. Only the driver and conductor were aboard when the landslide struck.
  3. The bus was descending toward Mettupalayam when the hillside fell near Burliyar, by the Coimbatore–Nilgiris border. These mountain roads link the foothills with Coonoor and Udhagamandalam. Another approach to the hills runs through Kotagiri.
  4. The landslide struck overnight on October 23 into October 24, 2026. Sheeba, a tourist travelling behind the bus, said it hit around eleven on Friday night. The precise timing is disputed between late Friday and Saturday's early hours.
  5. The earlier passenger total is disputed. Three passengers reportedly got off at Kurumpadi. Kesavan said all seven had already been dropped off. About fifty reportedly changed buses after a puncture. Nobody has explained how those totals fit together.
  6. Sheeba described two landslips within about one kilometre. She reached safety in Mettupalayam around noon on Saturday. Rocks, mud and an uprooted tree severely damaged the bus, while other landslips blocked the mountain road.
  7. Burliyar received 250 millimetres of rain in the twenty-four hours ending at seven on Saturday morning. The district classified that as extremely heavy rainfall. Intermittent rain continued during the rescue, hampering crews trying to move along the blocked road.
  8. A mini goods carrier also fell into a gorge at the landslip site. Its driver, Moushin, 38, climbed out and reached safety. He was taken to Coonoor Government Hospital for treatment. His treatment was separate from Kesavan's admission in Mettupalayam.
  9. The stranded travellers included 241 students and 25 teachers from two Kerala schools visiting Udhagamandalam. They were among the road users brought to Mettupalayam. Marriage and community halls and a school provided accommodation, and officials supplied food, including Saturday breakfast.
  10. Medical teams stood by as the travellers reached the foothills. Rescuers had to reach a stretch seven to ten kilometres up from there. That distance describes their difficult approach to the site, while traffic congestion further slowed their movement.
  11. Rescue operations began around six on Saturday morning. Six Fire and Rescue Services teams came from Coimbatore. Tamil Nadu and national disaster response teams joined them, alongside disaster personnel stationed in Udhagamandalam and ambulance staff, while rain continued to hinder access.
  12. Coimbatore Collector Pavankumar Giriyappanavar described the evacuation and access difficulties. Ministers V. Sampath Kumar and S. Kamali inspected the affected stretch. Sampath Kumar said Kesavan's condition was being monitored, and alternative transport would be arranged for stranded travellers.
  13. The district warned that more landslips, falling trees, rockfalls and sudden flooding could follow. It advised the public and tourists to avoid the mountain roads via Coonoor and Kotagiri, and to follow district and meteorological warnings.
  14. Sampath Kumar said the affected section would stay closed until further notice. Separately, the district suspended traffic, including public transport, from six in the evening to six in the morning for three days. Essential and emergency vehicles were exempt.
  15. The advisory urged people to avoid unnecessary tourist visits and stay away from flooded roads, overflowing streams and low-lying areas. It also warned them to keep away from electric poles and wires during rain. No reopening date has been confirmed for the damaged section. The three-night restriction doesn't automatically reopen it.
