  1. Nine fire-rescued orangutans have climbed back into the forest canopy.
  2. The group includes mothers with dependent young and three pregnant females. For these critically endangered animals, the move brings a chance to live in protected habitat. What did it take to get them back into the wild?
  3. Conservationists opened the transport cages in Batu Nyambu forest on October 29, 2026. The protected area covers 23,000 hectares in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. They chose it for its largely undisturbed habitat and abundant food.
  4. The orangutans had been rescued in August and September from an oil palm plantation in Ketapang. Fires had swept through their habitat, leaving some animals injured and others badly depleted.
  5. Karmele Llano Sanchez, head of the YIARI wildlife rehabilitation foundation, said some animals had burns on their hands and feet. Others were severely underweight and malnourished. They needed treatment and time to recover before they could make the journey.
  6. The nine spent four to eight weeks recovering at a rehabilitation centre in Ketapang. Their return to the forest followed that period of care, with final veterinary examinations revealing more about the families making the trip.
  7. Four mothers had their young with them. During the final veterinary checks, staff also discovered that three of those mothers were pregnant. Those pregnancies don't add to the nine animals counted in the release.
  8. Conservationists moved the animals by vehicle, then boat, then on foot. They carried heavy transport cages through steep, slippery forest terrain to reach the release site. Once the doors opened, the orangutans climbed nearby trees and disappeared into the canopy.
  9. The destination offered food and relatively undisturbed forest after weeks in rehabilitation. But the nine animals represent only part of a much wider rescue effort across fire-affected areas of West Kalimantan.
  10. A regional tally counted 51 orangutans rescued between August 6 and October 10 in Ketapang and North Kayong. Indonesia's forestry ministry put the wider count at at least 51 since early August. That's a cumulative rescue total; it doesn't tell us how many have returned to the wild.
  11. Nusantara Atlas estimates that more than 1.9 million hectares burned across Indonesia during the first nine months of 2026. That figure covers land nationwide, extending beyond orangutan habitat. It measures a different scale of destruction from the forest receiving these animals.
  12. These nine have completed the journey from rescue through rehabilitation to protected forest. How they're faring since release, including the outcome of the three pregnancies, isn't yet known.
