  1. Novaya Gazeta plans to switch off its servers and leave its Moscow newsroom. The independent newspaper says Russian authorities have forced it to stop working, ending the domestic newsroom's continuing journalism. What will that shutdown take away, and what will readers still be able to access?
  2. November 9, 2026 is the shutdown date announced by editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov. The newspaper announced the decision on October 30, ten days before the planned departure. Its servers are scheduled to be switched off then.
  3. The announcement covers Russia's Novaya Gazeta newsroom and its online publication. Novaya Gazeta Europe is a separate exile operation. The Moscow announcement gives readers no reason to treat the two operations as one closure.
  4. The editors identify their workplace as 3 Potapovsky Lane in Moscow. Sokolov says the team has spent 30 years in that home. The departure would remove both a physical newsroom and the servers supporting its online publication.
  5. Sokolov put the decision bluntly. “Novaya Gazeta is ceasing to exist.” He said the team would turn off the lights on November 9, shut down the servers and leave the premises where it has worked for 30 years.
  6. The editorial board blamed Russian authorities and intelligence services for forcing the team to end its work. Its Russian-language statement carried the heading “We were killed.” An English-language version also appeared on October 30.
  7. The editors describe state pressure as the reason they can no longer continue. Their announcement follows direct action against Sokolov himself. Authorities detained him for questioning on October 15 and searched his home, linking those actions to a colleague's criminal case.
  8. That colleague, journalist Oleg Roldugin, was arrested in April. Authorities charged him with what they called “unlawful access to computerised information.” He faces an allegation of illegally accessing computer information, and he's awaiting trial.
  9. A Moscow court ordered Roldugin detained on April 10, until May 10, while investigators pursued the case. The October 15 action against Sokolov followed months later. By October 30, Roldugin was under house arrest awaiting trial.
  10. Novaya Gazeta had already reduced its work inside Russia after the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Authorities revoked its media licence that year. The online-licence revocation was dated September 15, 2022. The shutdown now scheduled for November would end the Moscow newsroom's continuing operations.
  11. Novaya Gazeta was founded in 1993. Its then editor-in-chief, Dmitry Muratov, jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 for his “efforts to safeguard freedom of expression.” Five years later, the newsroom is preparing to leave its Moscow home.
  12. Six of the newspaper's journalists and staff members have been murdered over its history. Its newsroom has faced raids, and its journalists have faced prosecution. Russian authorities have also designated the publication a “foreign agent,” a label used to stifle dissent.
  13. The announced loss is the Moscow newsroom's continuing reporting and online publication from November 9. Readers still don't know whether they'll retain access to its existing archive after the servers are switched off.
