Kenneth Kirk 1

  1. A two-car crash killed a 59-year-old woman in Pacific Beach. Police arrested the other driver on suspicion of driving under the influence. Investigators still have to determine the full sequence that led to the deadly impact.
  2. The woman was driving a Toyota Camry in San Diego's beach neighborhood Thursday morning, November fifth. An ambulance took her to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police say the other vehicle struck her driver's-side door.
  3. Police now describe high-speed travel before the impact. Earlier, they hadn't confirmed whether speed played a role. Their account now includes both that description and an arrest on suspicion of impaired driving.
  4. The man driving the Ford was 41. Police say he traveled northbound on Mission Boulevard at high speed before hitting the Camry. He was driving a 2014 Ford Fusion, and officers arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence.
  5. The collision closed sections of Grand Avenue and Mission Boulevard, two major streets in Pacific Beach. Police initially expected the emergency response and investigation to block those roads for several hours. That estimate was issued on November fifth.
  6. Grand Avenue's closure covered the 700 to 800 block, between Ocean Boulevard and Bayard Street. Mission Boulevard's covered the 4300 to 4400 blocks, between Hornblend Street and Thomas Avenue. We don't know whether those sections are open now.
  7. Witness Kenneth Kirk saw a black Ford speeding, heard a loud boom and said the Camry spun around on impact. He described the Ford's pace as, “He was going like freeway speeds down the main highway.”
  8. Kirk estimated the Ford was traveling at 60 miles per hour or more. That's his eyewitness estimate. Police haven't supplied a measured speed. Kirk also said he couldn't tell whether the Camry had gone through a red light.
  9. Police describe high speed and suspect impaired driving, but investigators haven't announced a final cause or a charging decision. The San Diego Police Department's Traffic Division is investigating. Police have asked anyone with information about the collision to contact Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
