- Firefighters withdrew from a burning vacant building while crews checked whether its structure was safe. The former Derouin’s Heating and Plumbing building suffered smoke and water damage throughout, and the response closed part of Mill Street. Investigators are still trying to determine what started the fire.
- Mill Street was closed between Main Avenue and Black River Parkway on Monday morning. The fire damaged the vacant former business at Mill and Newell streets in Watertown, New York. That closure dates to November second.
- Firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames inside the building. They went in, attacked the fire and searched the immediate area for anyone who might be trapped. Then they pulled back outside while the building’s structural integrity was assessed.
- Crews continued fighting from outside, then went back in once conditions were judged safe enough. They extinguished the remaining fire and completed their search. No one was found inside, and neighboring buildings were unaffected.
- The building’s heavy construction helped keep the blaze contained. But smoke and firefighting water reached throughout the structure. The extent of that damage leaves the owner facing repairs, even though the fire didn’t spread to the neighboring properties.
- Fire officials reported no injuries later Monday, including no firefighter injuries. That clarified the uncertainty from earlier in the morning, when the injury situation was still unknown. Everyone sent into the building came through without a reported injury.
- Fort Drum Fire assisted Watertown’s firefighters. City police, public works, water and codes departments also helped, along with National Grid and Guilfoyle Emergency Medical Services. Fire and police personnel stayed to check for remaining fire and carry out investigative work.
- The call came around four forty-five Monday morning. Crews were still there at eight. Fire and police personnel remained until just after ten fifteen, then secured the property and returned it to its owner.
- Wednesday’s road status is still unclear. Responders leaving the property doesn’t tell drivers when Mill Street reopened. The full repair costs and the building’s final structural condition are also still unclear.
- Mattresses were found near where the fire began, toward the back of the first floor. The building had been broken into, and a rear door was open. A passerby also described an unboarded window with a rope hanging from it.
- Fire officials believe people experiencing homelessness may have been sheltering inside and may have caused the blaze. They're investigating that possibility. The signs of entry don't identify who was there, and investigators haven't confirmed how the fire ignited or who was responsible.
- Fire Chief Matt Timerman warned that vacant buildings put firefighters at risk of falling through floors, becoming trapped or losing their bearings. Those are hazards crews face while searching spaces where they may not know whether anyone is inside.
- Two Watertown firefighters suffered career-ending injuries in a fire next door in 2018, Timerman said. That neighboring building was lost after someone intentionally set the fire. Monday’s crews were working beside a site with that history.
- Timerman urged owners to maintain and light their buildings, visit frequently, enlist neighbors and consider security systems. Police Chief Cristin Lyon said officers regularly check properties, including when owners ask before going away, but police can’t be everywhere at once.
