Three people were inside the Cobden home when fire engulfed its front: a father and his children, aged five and 16. All escaped without injury. Now, among the charges brought after the investigation, three counts of criminal damage by fire endangering life put the risk to those inside at the centre of the allegations. 2
Police charged two women and two men on 27 October 2026 over the suspected arson attack on Mitchell Street in south-west Victoria. Warrnambool Crime Investigation Unit detectives arrested them at about 8am after executing three search warrants—two in Camperdown and one in Cobden. The arrests move the case from a public appeal for information into criminal proceedings, but the allegations remain unproved. 2
The fire happened months earlier, at about 6:17am on 5 February. The father was still home before leaving for work when he heard a loud “whoosh” as flames forced their way inside. He tried to fight the fire while calling emergency services. Firefighters arrived and extinguished the blaze. 2 8
In an earlier appeal reported by ABC on 17 October, Detective Sergeant Andrew Raven described how close the family had come to disaster. His warning was about what could have happened, not a report of injuries or confirmation that the children were sleeping. 8
The consequences could have been devastating, particularly given the children could have been asleep when the fire was lit.
What the charges actually say
A 34-year-old Cobden woman faces 15 charges. The examples published in the police announcement include criminal damage by fire, described as arson, and the three counts of criminal damage by fire endangering life. The announcement also lists possessing a drug of dependence, possessing ammunition, possessing a prohibited weapon and handling stolen goods. It is not a complete, itemised account of all 15 offences. 2
The endangering-life allegations distinguish this case from an accusation concerned only with damaged property. They allege danger to people. But the published charge descriptions do not set out precisely what conduct prosecutors will attribute to the woman, and they do not establish guilt.
A 44-year-old Camperdown woman is charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice, trafficking methamphetamine and conspiracy to commit an offence. A 34-year-old Camperdown man faces attempting to pervert the course of justice, conspiracy to commit an offence, committing an indictable offence while on bail and trafficking methylamphetamine. The two drug spellings appear in the respective published charge descriptions; they do not identify two different drugs. 2
The justice-related charges allege an attempt to interfere with the legal process, but the announcement does not explain the alleged interference. Nor does it specify the proposed offence behind the conspiracy charges. Those gaps matter: a list of offences is not yet a public account of how police say the defendants acted together. 2
A separate Camperdown man, aged 50, faces weapon and drug offences. His charges are not itemised in the full announcement. The ammunition, prohibited-weapon and drug-possession allegations specifically listed there belong to the Cobden woman's charge list; they should not be transferred to him. None of the four accused is named in the reports examined. 1 2
The presence of drug and weapon allegations alongside the fire investigation does not establish a drug-related motive for the suspected arson. Police previously described the attack as targeted, but the reason for it remained unclear. The charging announcement does not explain a motive, a connection between the accused and the family, or each defendant's precise alleged role. 8 2
Footage is not an identification
Before the arrests, investigators sought help identifying a masked person filmed at the front of the house. ABC's 17 October report described CCTV showing a man using what police believed was an accelerant before flames took hold. He wore a blue hooded jacket, black trousers and runners, with his face covered. The substance was an investigative assessment, not a publicly established chemical identification. 8
Police also released images of a silver Mazda 3 travelling towards Camperdown on Camperdown-Cobden Road about five minutes after the fire. An external sunshade on its rear-left window and damage to its rear-left bumper were identifying features in the appeal, which also sought witnesses and dashcam footage. 8
Neither lead can safely be turned into a conclusion about the accused. The public reports do not identify a particular defendant as the filmed person, establish who drove the Mazda, or say that any accused person was in it. Detectives had pursued several lines of inquiry; the charging announcement does not establish which one produced the arrests. 8 2
The custody accounts do not match
There is a material disagreement in the accounts published on 27 October. ABC Victoria reported that all four accused had been remanded to appear at Warrnambool Magistrates' Court on 28 October. The detailed Victoria Police announcement reproduced by Mirage News instead says the two women and the 34-year-old man were remanded for that date, while the 50-year-old man was bailed to appear later. Both accounts concern the same arrests; this is not simply an earlier account overtaken by a later development. 1 2
The National Tribune and WD News also carried the detailed police account distinguishing the two men and their custody outcomes. These are reproductions of the same announcement, not separate court findings. The detailed account supports three remanded defendants and one bailed defendant, but the conflicting report leaves the 50-year-old man's status requiring confirmation. 4 6
Known
- The police announcement scheduled the two women and the 34-year-old man at Warrnambool Magistrates' Court on 28 October. 2
Unknown
- No verified outcome of those proceedings, later bail decision, plea or finding has been established in the available reporting. The 50-year-old man's later court date and custody status remain unconfirmed.
Next
- The next substantive development is a verified court account: what happened at the scheduled appearances and when each defendant must return.
The family's escape without injury is established. So is the fact that four people now face charges after the investigation. What remains for the court is not whether the fire was frightening, but whether the allegations against each accused can be proved.
As aired 17 lines
- A father and his two children escaped a fire that engulfed their home's front.
- Police have charged four people over the suspected arson in Cobden. One woman faces three fire charges alleging danger to life. The children inside were five and sixteen.
- What do the charges reveal about the attack, and what now goes before the court?
- Detectives arrested two women and two men after executing three search warrants, two in Camperdown and one in Cobden. Warrnambool Crime Investigation Unit officers made the arrests at about eight in the morning on 27 October 2026.
- The fire happened on 5 February 2026. An appeal involving footage and a vehicle was described publicly on 17 October. The arrests followed on 27 October, with court appearances scheduled for three of the accused on 28 October.
- The father was still home before leaving for work when he heard a loud “whoosh”. Flames engulfed the front of the Mitchell Street house just after six in the morning and forced their way inside. He tried to fight the fire while calling emergency services. Firefighters arrived and extinguished the blaze.
- Detectives had warned during the earlier appeal that the fire could have had devastating consequences. Detective Sergeant Andrew Raven said the children could have been asleep when it was lit. All three members of the family escaped without injury.
- A 34-year-old Cobden woman faces fifteen charges. They include arson and three counts of criminal damage by fire endangering life. Those charges put the danger to the people inside the home at the centre of the allegations.
- Her other charges include drug possession, possessing ammunition, possessing a prohibited weapon and handling stolen goods. All four accused face allegations that still have to be tested in court.
- A 44-year-old Camperdown woman and a 34-year-old Camperdown man each face charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice, conspiracy to commit an offence and methamphetamine trafficking. The justice charge alleges an attempt to interfere with the legal process.
- The 34-year-old man also faces a charge of committing a serious criminal offence while on bail. A separate Camperdown man, aged fifty, faces weapon and drug offences.
- Police had already released CCTV showing a masked person at the front of the home before flames took hold. Investigators believed the person used an accelerant, a substance that helps a fire spread. He wore a blue hooded jacket, black trousers and runners.
- A silver Mazda 3 was another investigative lead. Released images showed the car travelling toward Camperdown on Camperdown-Cobden Road about five minutes after the fire. It had an external sunshade on its rear-left window and damage to the rear-left bumper.
- Police sought help identifying the filmed person and the car, along with witnesses and dashcam footage. Detectives had pursued several lines of inquiry. They haven't publicly linked a particular defendant to the person in the footage or identified who was driving the car.
- The custody information conflicts over the 50-year-old man. One account has all four remanded for 28 October. The detailed police announcement says he was bailed for a later appearance, with the other three remanded.
- The two women and the 34-year-old man were scheduled to appear at Warrnambool Magistrates' Court on 28 October. We don't yet know the outcome of those proceedings. The 50-year-old man's later court date and custody status also need confirmation.
- Police had described the attack as targeted. They haven't explained the motive or the precise role they allege each defendant played. Four people now face charges after the investigation, and those allegations await testing in court.
