The intruders struck the man on the head and arms with iron bars before shooting him in the leg. Four masked men had entered an occupied home in Dervock, near Ballymoney in County Antrim; three other people were inside as the attack unfolded, according to police. 2 1
The injured man was taken to hospital after officers and the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service attended. The other three occupants escaped physical injury but were left badly shaken. The attackers fled in a Toyota Yaris that police say was later found burnt out on Burnquarter Road. 2
Police received the report shortly after 00:30 GMT on Tuesday, 27 October 2026. That is the established time of the report—not an independently confirmed minute at which the assault began. Detective Inspector Ballentine said one of the masked men carried a handgun and the other three carried iron bars. 2
The police appeal names the location as Stratham View. BBC Northern Ireland’s report on 27 October spells it Straham View and places it in Dervock, near Ballymoney; Northern Ireland World uses Stratham View. These are differing spellings in accounts of the same attack, not reports of two separate incidents. 2 1 20
The Toyota Yaris is a concrete link in the police account: detectives explicitly identify it as the car in which the men left the house. Its discovery on Burnquarter Road is therefore part of the account of their escape, not simply a report of an unrelated burnt-out vehicle. 2
The appeal does not give the car’s precise recovery location, when it was found or how much time passed between the assault and its discovery. It also does not establish who set it alight. Those gaps leave part of the attackers’ movements still unaccounted for publicly. 2
Condemnation is not a confirmed motive
North Antrim MP Jim Allister, of Traditional Unionist Voice, condemned the violence in a statement reported by Northern Ireland World on 27 October. His response went beyond the individual assault to describe what he considers a wider problem in Dervock. 15 20
Last night’s brutal attack in Dervock, with a man being shot in the leg and battered by iron bars, is beyond appalling.
Allister called it “the latest effort by criminal elements to impose their will on and in the community in Dervock”. He said he had previously met the Police Service of Northern Ireland about an “anti-community campaign” and called for rigorous police action to bring those responsible to account. 20
That is Allister’s characterization, and his account of earlier contact with police. The police appeal does not establish that this assault belongs to a wider campaign. Nor does it confirm a motive or identify a paramilitary affiliation. The brutality of the attack does not, by itself, establish who directed it or why. 2
The man’s subsequent medical condition also remains unconfirmed in the available reporting. Hospital treatment is established, but there is no verified assessment of whether his injuries were life-threatening and no established discharge update. His name and age have not been made public in these accounts. 2 1
No verified arrest announcement or suspect identification has been established for this attack. That is a limit on what can presently be reported, not confirmation from police that no arrests have occurred. The identities of the four men remain a central unanswered part of the case. 2 1
The evidence detectives are asking for
Ballentine is appealing for information about suspicious activity in the area, as well as CCTV, doorbell recordings or other footage that could assist the investigation. Such material could help detectives identify the masked men and establish their movements into and away from the house. 2
Anyone with information can contact police through the PSNI witness appeal form or by calling 101, quoting reference 21 of 27/10/26. Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. The appeal asks for material that could assist enquiries, rather than requiring witnesses to have seen the assault itself. 2
The immediate task is specific: connect the people who entered the home with their route out and the car found burnt out. Until that evidence produces further findings, the violence is established; the identities and motive behind it are not.
