Egypt's Octagon: A 22,000-Acre Command Centre Opens, and the Numbers Don't Quite Agree

Egypt says its new Octagon strategic headquarters covers roughly 22,000 acres, with about 4.7 million square metres of built space — a footprint that, on paper, sits somewhere between a small country and a very large city ⁸. Construction began roughly a decade ago, a span that has tracked Egypt's longer effort to consolidate its sprawling security apparatus into a single seat of decision-making ⁵. The ceremony itself was choreographed for symbolism. The honest problem is that the sources do not actually settle the Pentagon's acreage, and they do not agree on what they are comparing. The Pentagon's 29-acre figure is a rough shorthand for the building's tight footprint; its surrounding campus, access roads and parking push the total federal reservation closer to 92 acres, and the wider National Pentagon Complex property holdings run into the low hundreds. None of the reporting reviewed supplies a head-to-head, same-units comparison. What can be said is that the Octagon is, on every published estimate, an order of magnitude larger in land area than the Pentagon building proper, and that outlets have chosen different multipliers (eight times, 39 times, "the largest") to make the point. The disagreement matters because the comparison is the political payload. An eight-times claim is a superlative; a 39-times claim is a different kind of statement about priorities.

The official case is about coordination. It is a budget story. And the comparison with the Pentagon, whatever the right multiplier turns out to be, is the way that budget argument gets onto the front page.
