Fatal crash blocks all eastbound SR-408 lanes in Orange CountyWhat we reported
- A fatal crash occurs on eastbound SR-408 near mile marker 1 in Orange County. Troopers respond.
Now
A 48-year-old Orlando man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after striking a stopped work truck, troopers say. The other driver had minor injuries; a reopening time remains unconfirmed.
What moved
- An incident-matched TPK Traffic entry still lists the roadway as closed.
- FOX 35 reports all eastbound lanes closed while crews clear the crash.
What made the overnight collision on State Road 408 deadly? The Florida Highway Patrol’s account now draws an important distinction: a 48-year-old Orlando man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after his car struck a stopped construction truck, not from injuries attributed to the impact. The truck’s driver, a 50-year-old Deltona man, sustained minor injuries, according to FHP’s account reported by WKMG. 1
In our October 30 report at 5:05 a.m. Eastern, we described a deadly crash near mile marker 1 in Orange County and a shutdown of all eastbound lanes through the affected area. The vehicles, injury outcomes and circumstances had not yet been established. The new account changes the understanding of that earlier fatal-crash description: the collision and the death were separate events in a sequence that investigators have not fully explained.
The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. Friday, October 30, 2026, on eastbound SR-408 in the Gotha area. WKMG’s report supplies both the preliminary collision reconstruction and the truck driver’s witness account, attributing them to FHP. Those details come through the local outlet’s reporting, rather than a separately obtained official investigation release. 1
A work-zone collision, then a death
According to that account, a 2021 Dodge Charger was traveling eastbound in the inside lane. Ahead of it, a 2022 Ford F-650 construction truck was stationary in the same lane, within an active construction-zone lane closure. Its light board was operating. Troopers said the Charger’s driver failed to move over, and the front of the car struck the rear of the truck. 1
That means one lane was already closed for roadwork before the collision. The later shutdown of every eastbound lane through the incident area was a different closure, imposed after the incident. Keeping those two restrictions separate is essential to understanding both why the truck was stopped and what happened to traffic afterward.
The truck driver told investigators that the other man got out of the Charger after the impact and began yelling. He said he briefly left to notify law enforcement nearby. When he returned, he found the man back inside the car and not breathing. FHP said the Orlando man was pronounced dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. 1
The witness account has a clear limit: it describes what the truck driver saw before leaving and what he found on his return. It does not establish exactly when the shot occurred. The reported yelling does not explain the man’s state of mind, and the preliminary finding that he failed to move over does not establish that the collision was intentional.
Neither driver’s name is established in the available reporting. Their ages, hometowns, vehicles and reported injury outcomes are now known, but there is no reported motive or final investigative determination. WKMG says FHP’s investigation remains ongoing. 1
The closure record stops before reopening
The traffic picture has also advanced since our earlier report, though not far enough to say when eastbound passage resumed. Our first account included a closure entry at 3:55 a.m. Later observations extend the documented shutdown into the morning; they are not evidence that the road remains closed now.
The documented morning sequence
- October 30, around 1:30 a.m. Eastern1
The Charger strikes the stopped construction truck near mile marker 1, according to the FHP account reported by WKMG.
- October 30, 5:44 a.m. Eastern34
An incident-matched TPK Traffic entry still lists the roadway as closed.
- October 30, 5:47 a.m. Eastern23
FOX 35 reports all eastbound lanes closed while crews clear the crash.
A later WESH update, at 8:37 a.m., said the crash initially shut all eastbound lanes. That past-tense description did not explicitly announce a reopening or give a reopening time. A Florida 511 notice saying the incident “may have recently been cleared” was also inconclusive: it did not expressly confirm that lanes had reopened or establish when that happened. 32 33
No official incident-specific detour route is verified in the available information. The supported location remains eastbound SR-408 near mile marker 1 in the Gotha area, not an exact crash point or a confirmed nearest interchange. A more precise junction should not be substituted for that approximate location. 23
The update therefore resolves the basic questions about who was involved and how the vehicles collided, but not every question about the death or the highway disruption. The reported cause of death is now clear; the exact circumstances surrounding it remain under investigation. The morning shutdown is documented; its eventual end is not.

As aired 13 lines
- A driver died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after striking a stopped construction truck.
- Earlier on October 30, we reported a deadly crash and an eastbound shutdown, with a closure entry at three fifty-five. The Florida Highway Patrol now says the driver died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
- The truck's driver survived with minor injuries. What happened after the collision, and when did eastbound traffic resume?
- The collision happened near mile marker one on eastbound State Road 408, in Orange County near Gotha. Troopers place it around one thirty Friday morning. The location is approximate, along the highway through that area.
- The man who died was forty-eight and from Orlando. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The construction truck's driver was a fifty-year-old man from Deltona. He sustained minor injuries.
- The construction truck was already stopped in a lane closed for roadwork when the car approached.
- Troopers identified the car as a 2021 Dodge Charger and the truck as a 2022 Ford F-650. The truck was stationary in the inside lane of an active construction zone, with its light board operating.
- Troopers say the Charger driver failed to move over for the stopped truck. The front of his car struck the truck's rear. The construction-lane closure was in place before that impact. Authorities later shut all eastbound lanes through the incident area.
- The truck driver told investigators he saw the other man get out of the Charger and begin yelling. He then briefly left to notify law enforcement nearby. His account describes what he saw before leaving and what he found when he returned.
- When the truck driver returned, he found the man back inside the Charger, slumped over the steering wheel and not breathing. Troopers say he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They haven't explained exactly when the shot occurred or why.
- The highway shutdown continued into the morning. The earlier construction closure affected the inside lane; the shutdown after the collision affected every eastbound lane through the incident area.
- The eastbound roadway was still listed as closed at five forty-four in the morning. At five forty-seven, all eastbound lanes remained closed while crews cleared the crash. Those observations extend the documented shutdown beyond the closure described in our earlier update.
- Officials haven't confirmed when eastbound traffic resumed. The collision sequence is preliminary, and the Florida Highway Patrol's investigation into the incident remains open.
