One person suffered cardiac arrest and 10 others sustained minor injuries in a building fire in southern Seoul on October 20, 2026, while 60 people escaped on their own. Firefighters completed their search for occupants but were still fighting the blaze into the afternoon. Neither the cardiac-arrest patient’s outcome nor an all-clear for the building had been confirmed in the latest established reports. 1 19
The fire was reported at about 11:54 a.m. on the third floor of Shinmyeong Building in Yeoksam-dong, in Seoul’s Gangnam district. Yonhap identified the building; a fire-service briefing carried by YTN placed the first incident at 834-44 Yeoksam-dong and described a building with seven above-ground floors and two basement levels. The address is a Korean lot-number address, not a verified road-name street address. 2 19
The Korea Herald’s 2:03 p.m. report, citing Gangnam Fire Station officials, described one person in cardiac arrest and 10 others with minor injuries, including smoke inhalation. Cardiac arrest means the heart has stopped pumping effectively; the reported condition is not, by itself, confirmation of death. No subsequent outcome for that patient was established. 1

The Korea Herald reports one cardiac-arrest case, 10 minor injuries and 60 self-evacuations, without confirming extinguishment.
One fire, two injury breakdowns
The injury total is more consistent than the description of its severity. The 1:48 p.m. briefing published by YTN assigned 11 injured people to the first address: two seriously injured and nine with minor injuries. The later Korea Herald account also described 11 affected people, but divided them into one cardiac-arrest case and 10 minor injuries. The later breakdown is the latest established published account for this report. 19 1
Nothing in those accounts explains the change. It could reflect a reassessment, a reporting distinction or a correction, but none of those explanations has been confirmed. The publication sequence does not establish that a second seriously injured person recovered, or that anyone’s condition worsened between the two updates.
The evacuation figure has a separate meaning. The Korea Herald reported that 60 people left on their own; the earlier YTN briefing put that number at approximately 60. They were not described as 60 people rescued by firefighters. Nor can the 11 injured simply be added to the 60 to calculate how many people were inside: the reports do not establish whether those groups overlap. An address-specific hospital-transport total was also not established. 1 19
A second fire nearby makes keeping the figures separate especially important. That blaze was reported at about 12:01 p.m. on the fourth floor of Hanyang Building. Eight people were injured there, none apparently seriously, according to the contemporaneous accounts. Fire authorities said the two fires appeared unrelated. Those eight injuries belong to the second building, not Shinmyeong Building. 2 1
A search is not an all-clear
The completed occupant search is significant: by the early-afternoon briefing, nobody was confirmed trapped at the first address. But a search result answers a different question from whether a fire is out or a building is safe to enter. YTN’s briefing still described firefighting, and the later Korea Herald report did not announce completed extinguishment. 19 1
Herald Economy reported that the first crews arrived about four minutes after the call and that a Level 1 response was declared at 12:04 p.m. Its early account described a fourth-floor origin; the later Yonhap report and YTN’s address-specific briefing placed the first fire on the third floor. The available accounts do not explain that reporting change. 4 2 19
Personnel and equipment totals are less securely assigned. Yonhap reported deployment figures in an account covering both fires without allocating them by building, while Herald Economy gave different figures in its earlier report. Neither set provides a reliable, reconciled measure of the resources used at Shinmyeong Building alone. 2 4
The cause remained undetermined. Authorities said they would investigate after extinguishing the fires; no supported finding identified an ignition source, responsibility or a shared cause. The outstanding questions are concrete: the patient’s outcome, a reconciled injury assessment, confirmation that this fire is fully extinguished and an explicit determination that the premises are safe. A completed search does not settle those questions. 1 19
As aired 10 lines
- A building fire left one person in cardiac arrest.
- Ten others suffered minor injuries, and sixty people escaped on their own. Firefighters are still working to put the fire out. The patient's outcome and the building's safety are still unresolved.
- The fire was reported on Shinmyeong Building's third floor in Yeoksam-dong, in Seoul's Gangnam district. It broke out around eleven fifty-four on the morning of October twentieth. The building has seven above-ground floors and two basement levels.
- One person suffered cardiac arrest, meaning their heart stopped pumping effectively. Fire officials haven't confirmed a death or said how that patient is doing. Ten others had minor injuries, including smoke inhalation.
- Both injury breakdowns cover eleven people. An earlier briefing put two in serious condition and nine with minor injuries. The later figures describe one cardiac arrest and ten minor injuries. Nobody has explained why the severity breakdown changed.
- A separate fire broke out minutes later on nearby Hanyang Building's fourth floor. Eight people were injured there, with none appearing seriously hurt. Fire authorities said the two fires appeared unrelated.
- Sixty people left Shinmyeong Building on their own. The earlier briefing put that figure at about sixty. We don't know whether the injured people were also counted among those who escaped, so those figures can't give us a total occupancy.
- Firefighters declared a Level One response at twelve oh four, ten minutes after the fire was reported. The first crews had arrived about four minutes after the call. Crews continued fighting the fire into the afternoon.
- Firefighters had completed their occupant search by the early-afternoon briefing, with nobody confirmed trapped. The later update still described crews fighting the fire. Officials haven't confirmed that it's fully extinguished or that the building is safe to enter.
- The cause hasn't been determined. Investigators plan to examine it after the fire is extinguished.
