The aftermath of a rear-end collision on Nashville’s Demonbreun Street has two unresolved parts: the recovery of nine injured pedal-tavern passengers and an investigation into why a driver struck them. One patient was in critical condition in the latest available hospital update. Police say the Toyota RAV4 driver reported being distracted, but investigators had not identified what distracted him.1

Metro Nashville police said the RAV4 was traveling west through downtown when it hit the pedal tavern from behind at about 8:30 p.m. Nine of the tavern’s 12 passengers were injured, at least two seriously. The RAV4 driver and the pedal-tavern operator were not hurt, according to the WSMV/Gray News account published by WRDW.1

The collision’s location is established at street level, not at a verified intersection or address. Its day is less certain than the accounts’ descriptions of the impact: WRDW’s October 23 report places it on Thursday night, October 22, while FOX17’s October 22 report describes Wednesday night. No incident-specific police or emergency-response record was available to resolve that discrepancy.125

That disagreement is separate from the dates attached to the articles. WSMV’s initial report was published at 9:25 p.m. CDT on October 22—already October 23 in UTC. That publication time is not the collision time, and the calendar change between time zones does not settle the Wednesday-versus-Thursday question.225

One injury toll, overlapping hospital counts

Vanderbilt University Medical Center received six patients, according to a hospital public information officer quoted in the WRDW report. Five were described as stable and one as critical. Those six are part of the nine injured passengers, not an additional group of casualties. Likewise, the passengers police described as seriously injured belong within the nine-person injury count.1

An earlier FOX17 account, published October 22 at 9:40 p.m. and updated at 10:13 p.m., carried a police-attributed figure of at least four people hospitalized, without naming their destinations. The later six-patient Vanderbilt figure supplies a larger count at one hospital; it does not contradict an earlier minimum of four.251

The distinction matters because the figures answer different questions: how many passengers were hurt, how many were described as seriously hurt, and how many reached a particular hospital. Adding them would exaggerate the toll. The available reporting does not establish where the other three injured passengers received care or provide a complete, independently confirmed emergency-transport tally.

Nor is “stable” a discharge announcement. No subsequent condition, recovery, discharge or death update was established for this report. The latest available Vanderbilt breakdown remains five stable and one critical; it should not be read as a final account of the passengers’ outcomes.1

An admission is not an explanation

Police attributed the account of distraction to the RAV4 driver himself. That is an important lead for investigators, but it is not a completed finding about how the collision happened. Neither the full WRDW account nor the police-attributed reporting from NewsChannel 5 identifies a phone or any other specific source of distraction. The available information also does not establish whether charges were filed or announced.13

Police spokesperson Kris Mumford described the injured passengers as an “older crowd” and said she did not know where they were from. Their ages and hometowns were not established. She said pedal-tavern crashes were not common and that this was the first she knew of—a statement about her own knowledge, not proof that Nashville had never experienced another such collision.1

Mumford said police would investigate and speak with the driver, adding: “We hope they all recover well.” Her statement that patients had been transported to area hospitals did not supply a separate numerical transport count.1

No crash-specific road-closure or reopening notice was verified, leaving affected lanes and any reopening time unknown. That absence is not evidence that Demonbreun stayed open or is now clear. For now, the consequential unanswered questions remain the patients’ recovery and what investigators can establish beyond the driver’s reported distraction.

  1. A Toyota RAV4 rear-ended a pedal tavern, injuring nine passengers.
  2. At least two passengers suffered serious injuries. One of the six patients taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center was in critical condition.
  3. Investigators still haven't identified what distracted the driver before the collision.
  4. Nine of the pedal tavern's twelve passengers were hurt, police say. The RAV4 driver and the pedal-tavern operator escaped injury. The passengers described as seriously injured are part of that group of nine.
  5. Police say the Toyota RAV4 was heading west on Demonbreun Street in downtown Nashville when it struck the pedal tavern from behind. The crash location has been identified at street level, without a specific intersection.
  6. The impact injured passengers riding together on the same vehicle. But the injury count and the hospital count describe overlapping groups, so adding them would exaggerate the number of people hurt.
  7. Vanderbilt's spokesperson said one patient was in critical condition and five were stable. Those six patients make up the hospital's count. Police separately described at least two of the nine injured passengers as seriously hurt.
  8. Six patients were taken to Vanderbilt. Earlier, police had put the number hospitalized at at least four, without naming destinations. The later Vanderbilt figure gives a larger count at one hospital, while the earlier figure was a minimum.
  9. Vanderbilt's six-patient count doesn't tell us where the other three injured passengers received care. The hospital's latest condition update listed five patients as stable and one as critical.
  10. The collision happened at about eight thirty in the evening. But the day is disputed between Wednesday and Thursday. We don't yet know which day is correct.
  11. Police say the RAV4 driver told them he was distracted when he hit the pedal tavern. Investigators haven't identified the distraction. His explanation is one part of an investigation that's still underway.
  12. Police spokesperson Kris Mumford described the injured passengers as an older crowd. She said pedal-tavern crashes weren't common and this was the first she knew of. She said investigators would be talking to the driver.
  13. Mumford said patients had been taken to area hospitals, without giving a separate transport total. The crash remains under investigation, and police still haven't identified what distracted the driver.
