- CBS Miami identifies Mathis and Shelton and reports officials’ assessment that Mathis is extremely critical and not expected to survive.
اکنون
Mathis remained critical with burns over at least 80% of his body. Monday’s ruling keeps Shelton detained and resolves the bond question left open in our earlier report.
آنچه اکنون قطعی است
- Monday’s reported court outcome is denial of bond, with a preliminary probable-cause finding. Shelton remains accused, not convicted.
At least 80% of Nathaniel Devon Mathis’s body was burned—four-fifths of his body’s surface. The 33-year-old remained in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital in an October 26 report, two days after deputies found him unconscious in Brownsville. His reported prognosis is grave, but his death has not been confirmed.1
Now there is a new court decision in the case: a judge denied bond to Tanisha Shelton, the 45-year-old accused of setting Mathis on fire. NBC 6 South Florida reported that the ruling came at her Monday, October 26, appearance. She faces charges described as attempted murder and arson with great bodily harm. The ruling keeps her detained; it does not establish her guilt.1
The distinction matters because an earlier booking figure did not answer whether Shelton could leave custody. In our earlier October 26 broadcast, we reported a $10,000 bond listing on the attempted-murder charge, with the arson bond marked “to be set.” We explicitly cautioned that $10,000 was not a verified total release bond. Monday’s denial supplies the subsequent judicial outcome that had not been established when we first reported.261
What the bond ruling settles
The newly established outcome is detention without bond—not release for $10,000. What remains unexplained is how officials formally handled the earlier charge-specific booking entries. The available reporting does not establish that Shelton had previously been eligible for release on that amount.
WSVN’s courtroom coverage also reports a finding of probable cause: a preliminary determination that there is reason to believe Shelton committed a crime. That is not a verdict. Neither the finding nor the bond denial resolves whether investigators can prove the allegations against her.34
There are limits to the available court record. The hearing outcome is supported by courtroom reporting, not a signed detention order or an independently obtained docket. No judge’s name, case number or next hearing date has been established. WSVN’s account carries an October 25 publication label while describing Monday morning; NBC 6’s October 26 account explicitly identifies the Monday appearance.341
Our earlier report used the more specific charge description “attempted first-degree murder.” The broader wording in Monday’s NBC 6 report does not, by itself, establish that prosecutors reduced, amended or replaced that charge. Without a charging instrument, the exact statutory provisions and count details remain unverified.261
The accusation behind the case
The underlying incident occurred Saturday, October 24, near Northwest 63rd Street and Northwest 25th Avenue in Brownsville, in northwest Miami-Dade. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded at approximately 6:02 p.m. That is the reported response time, not an established minute of ignition, and the intersection-area description is not a precise numbered address.69
The alleged sequence comes from published summaries of an arrest report. According to NBC 6’s account, Shelton and Mathis had argued earlier in the day, and she allegedly told him she would leave and get someone to hurt him. Investigators say she left and returned a few hours later carrying a white plastic bucket containing an unknown accelerant inside a plastic bag.1
The report alleges that Shelton asked a witness to borrow a lighter, approached Mathis and resumed the argument. She then allegedly doused him with the liquid and used the lighter to ignite it. A witness gave deputies a suspect description, and deputies located and arrested a woman matching it. Those details describe the accusation and the reported route to identifying Shelton—not findings that the events happened as alleged.1
The substance has not been identified in the available evidence. Nor has an original affidavit or quoted witness statement been established here that would allow the full evidentiary basis for the pouring-and-ignition account to be independently checked. That gap is not proof that such evidence does not exist; it is a limit on what can currently be verified.
A prognosis is not an outcome
NBC 6’s October 26 report continues to describe Mathis as critical and attributes the statement that he is “not expected to survive” to the arrest report. That is a prediction about his survival, not confirmation that he has died, and it is not a newly established hospital-issued assessment.1
Our earlier coverage included an “extremely critical” assessment. The later use of “critical” alone does not demonstrate improvement or deterioration. Likewise, the reported burn extent does not mean every affected area suffered third-degree burns. The severity is clear; the eventual outcome is not.261
دانستهها
نادانستهها
- No later hospital-issued assessment or confirmed death has been established, and no next hearing date is known.
در ادامه
- A dated medical update and the court’s docket or detention order would clarify the two most immediate unresolved parts of this case.
The investigation remains active. For now, Monday’s ruling answers the immediate custody question. It does not answer whether Mathis will survive, or decide the criminal case against Shelton.1

- A judge denied Tanisha Shelton bond, keeping her detained in the alleged Brownsville burning.
- Earlier on October 26, we reported a ten-thousand-dollar booking bond on attempted murder, with arson marked “to be set.” We cautioned that wasn't a total release bond. Monday's judge denied bond, so Shelton remains detained.
- Nathaniel Devon Mathis, 33, has burns over at least 80 percent of his body and remains in critical condition. The ruling settles the immediate custody question. Whether Mathis will survive is still unknown.
- Deputies found Mathis unconscious and burned in Brownsville on October 24. They responded at about six that evening, near Northwest 63rd Street and Northwest 25th Avenue. That response time doesn't tell us exactly when the fire was set.
- Shelton, 45, faces attempted murder and arson with great bodily harm. The court also found probable cause, a preliminary finding that there's reason to believe she committed a crime. Shelton remains accused, and the court hasn't decided whether she's guilty.
- Mathis was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital after deputies found him. His condition was still described as critical on October 26. Earlier descriptions included extremely critical, so the shorter wording alone doesn't tell us that he's improved.
- The earlier booking figure never answered whether Shelton could leave custody. It covered one charge, while the arson bond was still awaiting a decision. Monday's denial now gives a clear court outcome. How officials formally handled those earlier entries hasn't been explained.
- Mathis suffered burns over at least 80 percent of his body. That includes second- and third-degree injuries. Deputies say he isn't expected to survive. His death hasn't been confirmed, and the prognosis leaves his eventual outcome uncertain.
- Investigators allege Shelton threatened Mathis during an earlier argument. They say she told him she would leave and get someone to hurt him. She then left and returned a few hours later. Deputies haven't explained what the argument was about.
- Investigators say Shelton returned carrying a white plastic bucket with an accelerant inside a plastic bag. They haven't identified the substance. They allege she asked a witness to borrow a lighter before approaching Mathis and starting the argument again.
- Investigators allege Shelton doused Mathis with the liquid and used the lighter to set him on fire. A witness gave deputies a suspect description. Deputies then located a woman matching that description and arrested Shelton.
- Monday's hearing leaves Shelton detained while the criminal case proceeds. Mathis's survival remains uncertain. The investigation is still active, and a next hearing date isn't yet known.
