- Three funeral-home visitors face charges of misconduct with a corpse.
- All three are in custody after an alleged incident at Swanborough Funerals in Browns Plains, south of Brisbane. A private family viewing became a police investigation. Prosecutors still have to prove what each person did and intended.
- Brian Christian Wong, Cassandra Hunter and Changmin Koo appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on November 7. Each faces three charges arising from the alleged interference with a dead man's body. The alleged conduct hasn't been proven in court.
- The court remanded all three in custody and adjourned their cases. None applied for bail. They'll remain in custody awaiting the next stage of proceedings, with prosecutors still required to prove the allegations against each defendant.
- Police described the accused as two men aged 47 and 38, and a 43-year-old woman. All three face the same set of charges.
- Each is charged with misconduct with a corpse and entering premises intending to commit an indictable offence, meaning a serious criminal offence. The third charge is being armed with intent to enter premises and commit an indictable offence.
- Police allege the group carried scissors, scalpels and blades into the funeral home intending to wound a dead body. They say the two men and woman had arranged to view a man known to them, arriving about 1pm on November 6.
- Police allege one man interfered with the body and fled before officers arrived. They arrested the other man and woman at the funeral home. At about 6:30pm, police arrested another man at a Browns Plains residence. All three appeared in court the next day.
- Funeral-home owner Esther Swanborough said Wong had come to discuss funeral arrangements for his father. She said the two people accompanying him were relatives, and Wong expressed a “deep need” to see his father.
- Swanborough said a mortician prepared the man's body before the visitors entered the private viewing space. They then asked her to leave for what they called “cultural practices”. She described that as “not an unusual request”.
- Swanborough said she returned and realised “something very different was happening”. She said she saw that “gloves were being put away”. Those observations prompted her to challenge the visitors and call police.
- “What have you done?” was how Swanborough described confronting the visitors. She said she began piecing things together and called police straight away. Once police had been called, she focused on caring for the deceased.
- Swanborough said the experience affected her emotionally because she cared deeply about her work in the funeral industry. Staff responsible for the man's care were left dealing with the aftermath of a viewing that had become a criminal investigation.
- Queensland increased the maximum penalty for improper or indecent interference with a body from two years to five years in 2017. The state's Criminal Code addresses that conduct under its provision on misconduct with regard to corpses.
- Further hearings were due the following week, with exact dates yet to be announced. The prosecution still has to prove the alleged interference, each defendant's involvement and their intent. At the November 7 hearing, all three were remanded in custody.
