- Pollution has killed brown and sea trout across three rivers. The loss includes fish returning to spawn, threatening the next generation as well as fish already living there. What caused the pollution, and how far could this set back a river already recovering from earlier fish kills?
- Inler Angling Club secretary Glenn McKibbin estimates about 1,000 fish have died. That gives a sense of the scale facing the people caring for these waters, while investigators work to determine the final number.
- The Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, known as Daera, has opened an investigation. It's working with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency to trace the pollution. A member of the public reported the incident on Tuesday morning.
- The fish died in the Gransha, Ballystockart and Inler rivers in County Down. The river system is associated with Comber, where the Inler is also known as the Enler. Both resident brown trout and migratory sea trout have been affected.
- The returning fish were coming back to reproduce. Losing adults at that point can reduce the fish available to produce the next generation, so the consequences can extend beyond the immediate death toll.
- Many migratory trout move into smaller tributaries, the streams feeding a larger river, to lay their eggs. Cleaner, cooler or gravel-bottomed water can provide spawning habitat, with fewer large predators than in the main river.
- McKibbin says the timing and location made this especially damaging. He described “current and future fish stocks obliterated for years to come”. That's his assessment of the loss; investigators haven't announced a recovery timetable.
- McKibbin also warns of knock-on effects for resident kingfishers, herons and otters. Those animals depend on the river's food web. His concern reaches beyond the trout themselves to the wildlife supported by the same water.
- Volunteers had already spent years trying to bring this river back. McKibbin called the latest loss “soul-destroying” for members working to improve it. He said the river was still recovering from major pollution incidents in 2013 and 2015.
- In 2013, almost 5,000 brown and sea trout were found dead in the Enler near Comber. In 2015, up to 300 died, with two separate fish kills suspected. Each figure describes an earlier incident on this river.
- A restoration account published in December 2016 described the club rebuilding a wild trout fishery using compensation following the 2013 pollution. The river's recovery had already required sustained work and resources before this latest setback.
- McKibbin is also challenging how waterways are protected. He said they continue to be “treated like sewers”, and argued that the fines usually imposed after pollution incidents fail to deter them. He called the current system broken.
- Club chairperson David Pyper described the loss as particularly disappointing for people who dedicate their time to the river. The club wants local representatives and authorities to prioritise rivers and direct resources towards better water quality and preventing further incidents.
- Investigators haven't yet identified what entered the water or who was responsible. They still have to determine the full fish toll. For this river's recovery, the immediate setback is the loss of resident trout and returning spawning fish across three waterways.
