After Austin I-35 truck crash, two lanes reopened to upper deck
Monday’s partial reopening gave northbound drivers access to I-35’s upper deck. It did not establish when the affected lower deck reopened, and its Wednesday status remains unverified.

Northbound drivers on I-35 in downtown Austin began Monday with a detour instead of a through route. After a semi-truck struck the median and overturned, traffic was sent onto 15th Street and the service road. By the 6:39 a.m. scene report, the backup stretched toward the highway’s bend near Riverside—even as southbound traffic was moving again.123
Two right northbound lanes later reopened, but there was an important limit: they gave drivers access to the upper deck only. The lower deck near 15th Street remained closed in Monday’s account from Austin police and the Texas Department of Transportation, reported by KEYE. That was a partial restoration of traffic, not a reopening of the roadway affected by the crash.3
As of the reporting check at 19:03 UTC on Wednesday, November 4, no verified current notice established when the northbound lower deck reopened or whether it was operating then. Monday’s closure information should not be read as evidence of a continuing Wednesday shutdown.
One crash, an uneven reopening
The truck hit the median and overturned around 3 a.m. CST on Monday, November 2. Austin police said they received the call at about that time; KVUE’s November 2 report put the crash at approximately 3:05 a.m. Police said only the 18-wheeler was involved, with no other vehicles caught in the crash.134
Both directions of the lower deck initially closed. Southbound lanes reopened first, at around 3:40 a.m., according to MySA. The result was a sharply different morning commute depending on direction: southbound traffic could move through while northbound drivers faced diversions and a growing queue.36
Monday’s crash and traffic disruption

KXAN’s scene report described northbound backups toward the bend near Riverside, with southbound traffic moving.
- November 2, 10:30 a.m. CST2
KXAN’s traffic report still described a northbound closure and service-road diversion, with no known duration.
The exact time of the two-lane northbound reopening has not been established. That makes it impossible to place the change confidently before or after every morning traffic report. KEYE’s more specific account supplies the essential distinction: police reopened two right lanes for upper-deck access, and TxDOT confirmed that the upper deck had reopened while the lower deck remained closed.3
The location descriptions also need care. Police identified the affected lower deck near 15th Street. KXAN’s later traffic report described the overturned truck near 12th Street, while other coverage used Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard as its reference point. These are descriptions of the downtown corridor around a single crash, not evidence of separate wrecks or a precise impact point at every named street.234
Cleanup continued; injuries remain disputed
Recovery involved more than moving the truck. KEYE reported that hazardous-material cleanup was still underway late Monday morning and that police warned the closure could extend into the afternoon. Earlier, KXAN had reported police concerns about a possible fluid leak. The later account establishes a cleanup operation, but not the material involved, its quantity or the extent of any spill.13
Freight Wire characterized the incident as involving a fuel spill. The available police and TxDOT reporting does not identify the substance, however, so the cleanup should not be described as a confirmed diesel spill or a continuing environmental hazard. Nor does the warning about a possible afternoon closure establish how long the lower deck actually stayed shut.38
The injury accounts are unresolved. In its November 2 coverage, KEYE reported that Austin police said no one was injured. FOX 7’s account of the November 2 crash reported minor injuries to the driver, while Freight Wire described hospital transport for non-life-threatening injuries. No medical or direct emergency-service record available for this report resolves that discrepancy. The official police account remains no reported injuries; the conflicting reports do not establish a confirmed injury toll.358
The cause of the crash also has not been established. A median strike and rollover describe what happened, not why it happened. The verified material does not support assigning a cause.
What Monday’s reporting does establish is a single-truck crash with consequences well beyond the truck itself: an initial closure in both directions, northbound traffic pushed onto local access roads, and a lower deck still unavailable after upper-deck access returned. The missing operational fact is the lower deck’s reopening time. Until a dated official update establishes it, neither “still closed” nor “fully reopened” is a verified current description.123

- A semi-truck hit the median and overturned on I-35, forcing traffic off the lower deck.
- Monday's crash in downtown Austin initially disrupted both directions. Two northbound lanes later reopened, giving drivers access to the upper deck while the affected lower deck stayed closed. When did that lower deck return to service?
- The truck overturned around three in the morning on Monday, November second. Austin police received the call around that time and said only the eighteen-wheeler was involved. No other vehicles were caught in the crash.
- Police identified the affected lower deck near 15th Street. The surrounding downtown corridor includes 12th Street and Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard. Those nearby reference points describe the area around a single truck crash.
- Police reopened the two right northbound lanes Monday morning so drivers could reach the upper deck. The Texas Department of Transportation confirmed that access had returned, while the northbound lower deck remained closed.
- That gave northbound drivers another way through the highway corridor. During the lower-deck closure, police directed traffic onto 15th Street and the service road, and urged drivers to find alternate routes.
- The northbound backup stretched toward the bend near Riverside during Monday's morning commute. Southbound traffic was already moving again, so drivers heading in opposite directions faced different conditions along the same downtown highway.
- The truck overturned around three. Southbound lanes reopened around three forty, but northbound traffic backed up toward Riverside at six thirty-nine. At ten thirty, northbound traffic was still being diverted, with the duration of the disruption unknown.
- The partial northbound reopening wasn't given an exact time. That leaves the sequence of some morning lane changes unclear, even though officials specified which deck drivers could reach.
- Austin police said nobody was injured. The driver reportedly suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. That conflicts with the police account, and the driver's condition hasn't been clarified.
- Crews were still handling hazardous-material cleanup late Monday morning. Police warned the closure could extend into the afternoon. Earlier, officers had raised concern about a possible fluid leak. The material involved hasn't been identified.
- The cause of the crash is still unclear. Monday's partial reopening restored upper-deck access while cleanup continued around the affected roadway. As of Wednesday, November fourth, we don't know when the northbound lower deck reopened or whether it's open now.
