Bend schools plan to reopen after four killings—but not Silver Rail

Bend’s school district has a plan to bring children back to class. The school where three children and a teacher were killed does not. After the October 15 attack at Silver Rail Elementary, the wider district is preparing to reopen while Silver Rail remains closed until further notice—a division between resuming school and recovering from what happened inside one.211214
Two wounded survivors remained hospitalized in the latest reporting available October 18. The 16-year-old attacker was fatally shot by an armed parent before officers entered the school. His death brought the total number of deaths to five; four people were killed by him. Investigators have established much of how he entered and how the violence ended, but not why he attacked or how he gained access to the shotgun.2221821
The children killed were five, eight and 11. The youngest was Rhoam Summer, a kindergartener whose family authorized the release of his name. The families of the two older children asked that their names remain private. Megan Lambert, 25, a teacher and volleyball coach who lived in Bend, was also killed.20120310
The wounded survivors are a seven-year-old girl and a 54-year-old teacher identified in NBC reporting as Becky Drury. Both were initially described as critically injured. At the October 16 police briefing, the girl was described as serious but stable at Oregon Health & Science University, while the teacher had serious, non-life-threatening injuries and was receiving treatment at St. Charles Bend. Those remain the latest specific medical assessments established here; continued hospitalization is not a new clinical assessment.21011222
What the response clock actually shows
Police identified the attacker as Griffin J. John II, a 16-year-old Bend resident who had previously attended Silver Rail but was not currently enrolled in Bend-La Pine Schools. Investigators believe he traveled there on foot, although his route remained under investigation. His former attendance establishes a connection to the school, not a motive for attacking it.5
A police-attributed account published by MyCentralOregon places him approaching the fenced rear of the school at approximately 12:58 p.m., from undeveloped land near Nina Avenue. As two vehicles traveled west on Brentwood Avenue, he crossed the street, threw his weapon over the fence and climbed onto school property. That account supersedes the earlier 12:38 p.m. rendering.212
October 15 response, Pacific daylight time
- About 12:58 p.m. PDT212
The suspect approaches the school’s rear fence, throws his weapon over it and climbs onto the property.
- 12:59 p.m. PDT24
Dispatch receives the first emergency call, from a person in a vehicle reporting being fired on by someone with a long gun.
- 1:01 p.m. PDT26
The school is directed into lockdown.
- 1:02 p.m. PDT24
The first officers arrive, approximately three minutes after the first emergency call.
Calls from inside the school followed the first call by about a minute. The three-minute response interval is measured from that initial emergency call to officers’ arrival. It is not a verified duration of the attack, nor an established interval between the parent’s gunfire and police reaching the school.1724
The gunman fired through locked doors to gain entry and reached a special education classroom just inside the building. The three children killed were in the same classroom. Police estimated that he fired as many as 15 rounds there, with the exact count still under investigation, and found approximately 44 additional rounds of 12-gauge ammunition on him or in his backpack. The evidence establishes the violence in that room more clearly than why he chose it.810
Two interventions, one unresolved identity
A teacher threw her cellphone at the gunman, tackled him and fought to take his firearm, according to police. A father whose two daughters attended the school also intervened. Kaylub Giamanco, 36, retrieved a .40-caliber pistol that police said had been legally secured in his vehicle, entered through the breached doors and shot the attacker multiple times. OregonLive and AP reporting establish the spelling Kaylub, rather than the Caleb used in some earlier accounts.5225206
In the father’s account, relayed by police, he heard gunfire and saw a teacher physically struggling with the suspect before he fired. Police credited the teacher’s resistance and the parent’s gunfire with helping prevent further deaths. That assessment matters, but it does not supply an exact count of lives saved or settle the precise sequence of the struggle.510
The teacher’s identity remains unresolved because two October 17 accounts conflict. Fox News identified the tackling teacher as Lambert, who was killed. Reuters, reporting the police account, said the teacher who fought the gunman was uninjured. Lambert’s death and a teacher’s physical resistance are established; the available evidence does not establish that Lambert was that teacher. Assigning her the intervention as settled fact would erase a consequential disagreement.45
Other discrepancies can be resolved. BBC News’s October 16 account reported four victims killed at Silver Rail. C-SPAN’s October 16 account gave a three-victim tally, contradicted by the fuller casualty record. An ABC News report that day named Mountain View Elementary; the attack occurred at Silver Rail. These errors do not leave either the location or the four-victim toll genuinely uncertain.1112210
The gun purchase is not access
Police said a Maverick 88 pump-action 12-gauge shotgun was found near the suspect. Law-enforcement sources told CBS that his mother had bought the shotgun approximately two months before the attack; NBC’s sources placed the purchase in August. Neither account explains how the teenager obtained it, whether it had been secured or where he acquired the ammunition. A reported purchase and a child’s access to a weapon are different questions.962
No charge related to firearm access or storage is established in the available reporting. Discussion of possible parental criminal liability has been conditional legal analysis, not an announced prosecution or a finding about the mother’s conduct. Governor Tina Kotek said investigators were examining how the teenager obtained the gun; she supported Oregon’s safe-storage laws while leaving open whether they needed improvement.29
Investigators returned to the suspect’s home and were examining his devices, internet history, social-media activity and text messages. They were also investigating whether he knew the victims or communicated his intentions. Bend police, county and state authorities, the FBI and federal firearms investigators joined the response and investigation. None of that investigative work has yet supplied a public explanation for the attack.22110
For families, the first unanswered question was whether their children were alive. Officers cleared the school room by room, and students and staff were bused to Journey Church for reunification. Joe Camarlinghi told The Guardian he waited three hours at a Bend church for news about his daughter. Mindy Miranda told NBC her eight-year-old daughter had been physically safe in an upstairs classroom; mother and daughter reunited that evening. Those accounts describe different families’ experiences of the wait, not the timing of the police response.24814
Flowers and tributes accumulated outside Silver Rail. Hundreds gathered in silence at a second vigil Friday evening, October 16, at Peace Corner. Neighbors organized fundraisers and meal trains. Kotek outlined immediate crisis services and longer-term mental-health support, including help getting children back to school. Recovery will require more than reopening a building.89
The district’s announced schedule keeps schools closed Monday and Tuesday, October 19–20, then reopens them Wednesday, October 21, on an early-release schedule, with regular schedules Thursday and Friday. Silver Rail is excluded. Police briefing material said investigators expected to retain its crime scene until at least Tuesday, October 20—a minimum working period, not a promised handover or reopening.23021121411
The attack has ended. The survivors’ treatment, the investigation and the interruption to children’s schooling have not. For Silver Rail’s families, a return date remains another answer they are still waiting to receive.

After Silver Rail’s four killings, gun-access questions remain unanswered
Yayımlandığı hâliyle
- A gunman killed three children and a teacher before an armed parent shot him dead.
- Two wounded survivors remain hospitalized after the attack at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon. The wider school district has a reopening plan, but Silver Rail remains closed.
- Families are still waiting to learn why he attacked and when Silver Rail's children can return.
- The shooting happened on October fifteenth. Five-year-old kindergartener Rhoam Summer was among those killed. His family authorized the release of his name. Megan Lambert, a twenty-five-year-old teacher and volleyball coach who lived in Bend, also died.
- The attacker killed four people. His own death brought the total to five. Two other people survived their wounds and remained hospitalized in the latest update available October eighteenth. They are a seven-year-old girl and a fifty-four-year-old teacher.
- Both survivors were initially described as critically injured. At the October sixteenth briefing, police described the girl as serious but stable at Oregon Health and Science University. Teacher Becky Drury had serious, non-life-threatening injuries and was being treated at St. Charles Bend. Those remain the latest specific medical assessments.
- The children killed were five, eight and eleven years old. The families of the two older children asked that their names stay private. One teacher was killed, and another was wounded.
- Police identified the attacker as Griffin J. John the Second, a sixteen-year-old Bend resident. He'd attended Silver Rail before, but wasn't currently enrolled in Bend-La Pine Schools.
- He returned to Silver Rail, the elementary school he'd once attended. Investigators believe he traveled there on foot. Police have described his approach to the school, while continuing to investigate the route he took to get there.
- Police say he approached the school's fenced rear from undeveloped land near Nina Avenue. Two vehicles were traveling west on Brentwood Avenue. He crossed the street, threw his weapon over the fence and climbed onto school property.
- Police put the fence approach at about twelve fifty-eight. The first emergency call came at twelve fifty-nine, from someone in a vehicle being fired on. Lockdown followed at one oh one. Officers arrived at one oh two, three minutes after that first call.
- Calls from inside the school followed the first call by about a minute. The attacker fired through locked doors to get inside. He reached a special education classroom just inside the building. The three children killed were in the same classroom.
- Police estimate he fired as many as fifteen rounds in the classroom. They were still working out the exact count. They also found about forty-four more rounds of twelve-gauge ammunition on him or in his backpack.
- A teacher threw her cellphone at the gunman, tackled him and fought to take his firearm. A father whose two daughters attended the school also intervened. Thirty-six-year-old Kaylub Giamanco retrieved a pistol from his vehicle and entered through the doors the attacker had breached.
- Police say Giamanco's forty-caliber pistol had been legally secured in his vehicle. He shot the attacker multiple times. Giamanco described hearing gunfire and seeing a teacher struggling with him before he fired. The attacker was dead before officers entered.
- The teacher's identity is still disputed. She's been identified as Lambert, who died, and separately described as uninjured. Police credit the teacher's resistance and Giamanco's gunfire with helping prevent more deaths. The precise sequence is still under investigation.
- Police found a Maverick eighty-eight pump-action twelve-gauge shotgun near the suspect. His mother reportedly bought the shotgun about two months before the shooting. Investigators haven't explained how he gained access to it or obtained the ammunition.
- His mother said she would've prevented the shooting if she could. Governor Tina Kotek supports Oregon's gun-storage laws and has left open whether they need improvement. Investigators are examining the circumstances that put the shotgun in the teenager's hands.
- Investigators returned to his home and examined his devices, internet history, social-media activity and text messages. They're also examining his background and whether he knew the victims or communicated his intentions. His former attendance explains his connection to Silver Rail. His motive remains unknown.
- Bend police, the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, Oregon State Police, the FBI and federal firearms investigators joined the response and investigation. A briefing estimate put law-enforcement and first-response personnel involved at roughly a hundred and fifty. Federal victim-assistance advocates also supported families.
- Officers cleared the school room by room. Students and staff were bused to Journey Church to reunite with their families. Parent Joe Camarlinghi described waiting three hours at a Bend church for news about his daughter.
- Mindy Miranda's eight-year-old daughter was physically safe in an upstairs classroom. A third-grader, she'd attended Silver Rail since kindergarten. Miranda received lockdown and reunification notices from the district. Mother and daughter reunited that evening. Miranda said families would advocate for children's mental health and safer schools.
- Flowers and tributes accumulated outside Silver Rail. Hundreds gathered at Peace Corner for a second vigil Friday evening. In a city of roughly a hundred thousand people, neighbors organized fundraisers and meal trains to help affected families.
- The disruption reached beyond Silver Rail. Bend-La Pine Schools canceled classes, activities and athletic events Friday. Oregon State University–Cascades and Central Oregon Community College also closed. Free walk-in support was arranged for families and community members that day.
- Those October sixteenth sessions ran at Central Library from ten to three, and at Larkspur Community Center from four to seven. The county, health system and district organized the help. Those were Friday's arrangements.
- Kotek mobilized state agencies and immediate crisis-response services. She also outlined longer-term mental-health support and help getting children back to school. She praised school staff, parents and first responders, including the father who intervened.
- The superintendent said Silver Rail had practiced a lockdown about two weeks before the shooting. Four school resource officers participated in that drill. The district's immediate priorities after the attack were caring for students and staff and helping emergency responders.
- Superintendent Steven Cook said, “We are stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy.” Police expected days of work at the school and said they would retain the crime scene until at least Tuesday, October twentieth.
- District schools will remain closed Monday and Tuesday, October nineteenth and twentieth. They'll reopen Wednesday, October twenty-first, on an early-release schedule. Regular schedules resume Thursday and Friday. Silver Rail is excluded from that plan.
- Keeping the school as a crime scene until at least Tuesday gives investigators a minimum working period. Silver Rail remains closed until further notice. Its students and staff still have no announced date to return.
