Two survivors remain hospitalized after the Bend school attack. Reports about the shotgun’s purchase still do not establish how the teenager obtained it or whether anyone else will face charges.
Three children and a teacher were killed at Silver Rail Elementary School. A seven-year-old child and teacher Becky Drury, 54, remained hospitalized in the latest available accounts. Their continued hospitalization is established; a new medical assessment showing how either survivor is progressing is not.2236
The same distinction matters in the investigation into the October 15, 2026, shooting in Bend, Oregon. Reports that the teenage attacker’s mother purchased the shotgun have not been followed by a disclosed police finding explaining how he obtained it—or the ammunition he carried. The reported purchase is a lead, not an answer to the access question.1021236
In our October 18 broadcast, we reported four victims killed, two survivors hospitalized and investigators examining firearm access. We also covered the allegation that the attacker’s mother bought the weapon. Subsequent reporting has not established a substantive change in those facts. A police statement carried by KOIN shortly after that broadcast makes clear that the central investigation remains open.236
How the gun and ammunition were accessed is part of that criminal investigation.
KOIN’s October 18 report, timestamped 17:41 UTC, also said no arrests had been made. That is narrower than a comprehensive statement about whether charges have been filed. The available reporting establishes no charge against the mother, and no later dated official police release has been located confirming who purchased the shotgun or how the teenager obtained the gun and ammunition.236
A reported purchase is not access
Police identified the attacker as Griffin J. John II, 16, a former student of Silver Rail. ABC News reported, citing unnamed law-enforcement sources, that his mother purchased the 12-gauge shotgun. WRAL relayed an NBC News source account placing the purchase in August. Neither account turns that allegation into a confirmed police finding.12
The August timing was already part of the earlier reporting, not a newly established development. More importantly, even a confirmed purchase date would leave essential questions unanswered: where the weapon was kept, what prevented or permitted access, how the ammunition was obtained and what anyone knew before the attack.
ABC News reported that investigators searched the apartment where the teenager lived with his mother; WRAL reported that investigators returned to the home. Neither account disclosed a search finding that explains access or establishes wrongdoing by another person. A search is an investigative step, not a conclusion.12
WRAL’s discussion of possible criminal liability was also conditional. Former prosecutor Bracken McKee said manslaughter charges could be possible if investigators established that the mother knew of and disregarded a substantial, unjustifiable risk. That describes an evidentiary requirement. It does not establish that she had such knowledge, and it is not a charging decision.2
Those distinctions are not technicalities. The question is whether evidence supports responsibility for another person’s actions—not whether a reported family connection to the gun makes a compelling headline. The purchase allegation alone cannot carry that conclusion.
What remains established about the attack
The October 16 Bend Police notice establishes October 15 as the shooting date. Its 12:59 p.m. time corresponds to the first emergency call, not a verified time for the first shot. The response clock should not be mistaken for a complete account of when the violence began.102
As we reported on October 18, police said the teenager approached the school’s fenced rear, threw the weapon over the fence and climbed onto school property. He fired at a pickup truck, then through locked doors before entering a classroom described as a special-education classroom.
Our broadcast also described two interventions: a teacher threw a phone at the gunman, tackled him and tried to take his firearm; a father whose children attended the school entered with a pistol and fatally shot the attacker during a struggle. Police credited both with preventing further deaths. The teacher who physically resisted the gunman has not been reliably identified, and the later accounts do not resolve that uncertainty.
The four victims were children aged five, eight and eleven, and Megan Lambert, a 25-year-old teacher and volleyball coach. The families of the two older children asked that their names remain private. The attacker also died, making five deaths in total—not five victims killed by him.2
The survivors’ conditions require similar care. WRAL described the injured child and Drury as recovering in hospital; ABC News described serious injuries. KOIN’s later police-attributed account still placed a seven-year-old and a second teacher in hospital without a new medical assessment. “Recovering” does not, by itself, establish improvement from the previously reported serious injuries, a discharge or a changed prognosis.21236
The school’s return remains unsettled, too. Our October 18 report distinguished the district’s announced Wednesday reopening plan for other schools from Silver Rail’s closure until further notice. A later reference to Wednesday without a calendar date does not establish a fresh deadline. No new return date for Silver Rail is established by these accounts.1
For now, the consequential questions are the same ones families faced after the earlier report: how the teenager obtained the gun and ammunition, whether evidence supports charges against anyone else, and how the two wounded survivors are progressing. Repeated allegations and conditional legal commentary do not resolve them. The next meaningful development will need to supply evidence, not simply another telling of what is already known.

After Silver Rail’s four killings, gun-access questions remain unanswered
Yayımlandığı hâliyle
- On October 18, we reported four school-shooting victims killed. Police are still investigating gun access. Three children and a teacher died, two survivors remain hospitalized, and investigators are examining how a teenager obtained the weapon and ammunition.
- What can investigators establish about that access, and could the evidence support charges against anyone else?
- Police say sixteen-year-old Griffin J. John the Second attacked his former elementary school with a twelve-gauge shotgun. The shooting happened October fifteenth at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon. He wasn't currently enrolled in the district.
- Unnamed law-enforcement officials say his mother purchased the shotgun, with the reported purchase placed in August. That's not yet confirmed. Investigators searched the apartment where they lived and returned to the home, but haven't disclosed a finding that explains how he obtained the gun.
- Police say, “How the gun and ammunition were accessed is part of that criminal investigation.” They also say no arrests have been made. Whether anyone else will face charges remains unresolved.
- A possible manslaughter case against the mother would depend on evidence that she knew of and disregarded a substantial, unjustifiable risk. Former-prosecutor analysis identifies that possibility, but investigators haven't disclosed evidence showing she had that knowledge. The reported purchase alone doesn't tell us how her son gained access.
- Police found a Maverick 88 pump-action shotgun near the attacker. They estimated he fired as many as fifteen rounds in a classroom. About forty-four rounds remained on him or in his backpack. Investigators are examining his devices, messages and background, with help from the FBI and federal firearms investigators.
- The first emergency call came at twelve fifty-nine. The school went into lockdown at one-oh-one, and officers arrived at one-oh-two. That measures the response from the call; it doesn't pinpoint when the first shot was fired.
- Police say the attacker approached the fenced rear of the school shortly before that call. He threw the weapon over the fence, climbed onto school property and fired at a pickup truck. He then fired through locked doors and entered a classroom described as a special-education classroom.
- A teacher threw a phone at the gunman, tackled him and tried to take his firearm. A father whose children attended the school entered with a pistol and shot the attacker during a struggle. Police credited both interventions with preventing further deaths.
- The father was later identified as Kaylub Giamanco. He was thirty-six and had legally secured the pistol in his vehicle. The attacker was already dead when officers entered. The teacher who fought him hasn't been reliably identified, and conflicting descriptions don't resolve whether that teacher was injured.
- Five-year-old Rhoam Summer died, along with children aged eight and eleven whose families asked to keep their names private. Teacher and volleyball coach Megan Lambert was twenty-five. The attacker's death brought the total number of deaths to five, including four victims.
- The two wounded survivors are a seven-year-old child and fifty-four-year-old teacher Becky Drury. The child was previously reported in serious condition, and Drury had serious, non-life-threatening injuries. Both are still reported in hospital. Describing them as recovering doesn't tell us whether those medical assessments have changed.
- Residents held vigils, and flowers and tributes gathered outside the school. Community members organized fundraisers and meal trains. Students and staff had been evacuated to Journey Church for reunification, while state agencies coordinated crisis services and longer-term mental-health support.
- The district announced a Wednesday reopening for its other schools on an early-release schedule, followed by regular schedules Thursday and Friday. Silver Rail remains closed until further notice. Police are still investigating access to the gun and ammunition, and the school has no announced return date.
