  1. Searchers have found a mother and her missing daughter dead near Bella Coola.
  2. Their family says they were taking a familiar walk close to home. Conservation officers suspect an animal attack and have warned people away from the trail.
  3. Investigators still have to determine what killed them and whether an animal poses a continuing danger.
  4. The women were found in the Snooka West Trail area, about eight kilometres east of Bella Coola, British Columbia. Their family identified them as Jennifer Balcarras, who was forty-eight, and her daughter, Selah Reed.
  5. The trail was roughly a five-minute drive from their home, and both women knew it. Jennifer's brother, Josh Balcarras, called it “Just a casual walk.” He said the area was “not in a remote area.” Their family expected them to return from somewhere familiar.
  6. The women went walking on October 31. Their family reported them missing November 1. Searchers found Jennifer on November 2, and Selah was found dead the following afternoon, November 3. RCMP officers and search-and-rescue teams took part.
  7. Josh described how the family's worry grew through successive nights. “The way it starts is a few hours of not hearing from them. That turns into a day, and then a night … then a second night comes and it becomes a real thing.” Both women have now been found dead.
  8. Jennifer worked as an art therapist in Bella Coola and had four children. Selah was her youngest. Her brothers remembered her love of books, playing guitar and singing, as well as painting and spending time outdoors.
  9. Her art also became part of her family's homes. She painted murals in her children's homes and in her brother Matthew's home. Matthew remembered her as “very much a central person in our family.” Those memories describe a mother whose work and creativity reached into everyday family life.
  10. Selah worked as an education assistant and was studying through Athabasca University's online learning program. Her family described her as “a gentle, sweet, quiet soul.” She loved ballet, art and hiking, interests that overlapped with her mother's.
  11. Josh said the two got along really well. “They were two peas in a pod. When Jenny hiked, Selah was right there beside her.” Their family remembers a close relationship, with the daughter sharing activities her mother loved.
  12. Selah's exact age is still unclear. The ages given are nineteen and twenty. Her family has identified her by name, and conservation officers confirmed that the second victim was found dead Tuesday afternoon.
  13. Evidence where Jennifer was found suggested possible animal involvement, bringing conservation officers into the investigation. Officers set traps as a team investigated the suspected attack. Inspector Jeff Tyre said no bears had been captured at the time of his update.
  14. Jeff Tyre offered condolences to the victims' families. Nuxalk Nation elected Chief Samuel Schooner also extended condolences. He directed community members and media to the conservation service for updates as officers worked to determine what happened.
  15. The community had already experienced a grizzly attack the previous year. In 2025, a grizzly attacked children and teachers near Bella Coola, leaving several critically injured. Schooner said these deaths would bring trauma to the women's family, people affected by that earlier attack, and the wider community.
  16. Conservation officers said they would assess any bears they captured before deciding what to do next. If they determined a bear was responsible for the attack, they would kill it under provincial guidelines to protect public safety.
  17. Investigators haven't announced a final cause of death or identified a responsible animal. A grizzly's involvement remains unconfirmed. The public has been told to stay away from the Snooka West Trail area while conservation officers investigate.
