  1. Gun owners have booked almost 2,500 firearms for surrender in New South Wales.
  2. On August 16, we reported the buyback would open November 2. It's now operating, offering compensation while rules for existing collections remain unfinished. What must owners surrender now, and what can they keep?
  3. More than 330 appointments covered almost 2,500 firearms by November 2. Those owners had booked future handovers. Police haven't announced a completed-surrender total, so we don't yet know how many of those guns have actually been handed in.
  4. The scheme runs for twelve months. Existing owners don't yet have to surrender firearms to meet the caps while the government finishes regulations for their holdings. Owners can choose to participate now, but the rules determining what they may keep are still taking shape.
  5. The policy followed the antisemitic attack on a Hanukkah festival at Bondi Beach that killed fifteen people on December 14, 2025. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the national buyback days later. NSW Premier Chris Minns backed tighter firearm controls.
  6. On November 2, we also reported that armed NSW Police patrols had begun in Sydney after the attack. At the buyback's launch, only NSW and the Australian Capital Territory had agreed to participate nationally. Western Australia ran its own buyback in 2024.
  7. Six police stations initially take appointments: Dubbo, Griffith, Grafton, Penrith, Sutherland and Narellan. Registered firearm owners who want to participate must book through NSW Police Gun Safe. Owners need an appointment at a participating station before bringing firearms in.
  8. Another thirty-four stations are expected to start accepting bookings in early December, bringing the network to forty. For owners beyond the opening locations, access depends on that expansion as well as getting an appointment.
  9. Police Minister Yasmin Catley said every available appointment was full at launch. That described the opening bookings. Owners looking for a slot now need to check Gun Safe for current availability.
  10. Phase one pays between four hundred and fifty and one thousand Australian dollars, depending on firearm type. Higher-value firearms are intended for phase two in 2027, with payments up to ten thousand dollars contemplated. Those later payment details aren't settled.
  11. The Commonwealth and NSW split compensation costs fifty-fifty. The initial one-thousand-dollar ceiling means an owner's payment depends on the firearm. Owners considering whether to hand over a higher-value working gun also face a later compensation phase whose terms are still unfinished.
  12. The four-firearm cap for recreational hunters already applies when acquiring firearms. The limit is ten for sporting shooters, farmers, vertebrate pest controllers and other professionals. The government hasn't yet formalised how those caps will apply to existing holdings.
  13. No exemption is planned for recreational hunters. For some owners in the ten-firearm categories, the government proposes permission from the police commissioner to keep more. It hasn't released the precise criteria.
  14. Catley offered two examples: a farmer keeping firearms across several properties, and an elite sporting shooter needing different firearms for different events. Owners in those situations would still need to qualify under the eventual permission process.
  15. NSW Farmers Association president Rebecca Reardon says different firearms serve different jobs. She points to short and long distances, animals of different sizes, moving targets, and work from helicopters or the ground. Farmers want the permissions to accommodate those practical needs.
  16. Fourth-generation Wagga Wagga farmer Alan Brown called the policy a knee-jerk response. He says worsening feral-pest problems make firearms necessary on his property, and argued the government needed a carefully thought-through program instead of a buyback.
  17. Brown called the compensation “a joke” compared with what most guns are worth. He predicted people would surrender “old rubbish” and keep good weapons. That's his prediction about owners' choices; the condition of the booked firearms hasn't been disclosed.
  18. Catley argues that reducing firearm numbers makes the community safer. She says more than one gun, on average, is stolen in NSW every day, turning legally held firearms into illegal guns. Reducing opportunities for theft and misuse is the government's case for the buyback.
  19. The opposition initially backed Minns's call for tighter controls after the attack, then hardened its position. Opposition Leader Kellie Sloane called it “absolute bullshit” to suggest the buyback would prevent another Bondi-style attack. She says organised criminals and terrorists are the real enemy.
  20. Sloane told owners, “Hold onto your guns if you don't want to give them away.” The Coalition promises to scrap the caps for farmers and sporting shooters if elected. One Nation's NSW leader Mike Newman promises to abolish the caps and scrap the buyback altogether.
